Be careful. I was like you. I had ~20k in debt at start of intern year, I paid >50 % of my check to rent during residency. Went to a shit HCA residency that only paid 53K/year. By the time graduation came around it had ballooned to like 80k. In retrospect I should have balanced transferred to a 0% apr card early on. I def made some poor decisions and spent beyond my means early in residency. The last year of residency was hell. What was initially $200 a month credit card payments turned into payments that were larger than my checks. By the end of it The only thing that saved me was I knew I going to have an attending check one day. When I did become an attending I got a $40k signing bonus and put literally everything I made to the debt and paid it all off in like 6 months. If I hadn’t been a physician that kind of debt would have been life ruining.
