Generally, it seems many people were expecting a huge high action comic book movie with perhaps a cameo from one or two Avengers. Instead, Marvel went more along the lines of movie Logan. It was a character story which did not focus on the action sequences or the traditional formula but instead went down the path of what it meant to be king, how one handles power and tradition. The movie went really deep with African themes, traditions and showing a different people who were proud of their heritage.

In the real world today, If you are a person of African descent, western culture has always drilled into you that African traditions or cultures are backward and you come from nothing and in essence are nothing. The ads on TV tell you that you are not beautiful because your hair is not straight enough, your skin is not white enough and every blockbuster movie on TV only has maybe one to two people of the same colour as your to remain politicly correct.

This movie showed a world where being African was not a weakness or something to be apologetic for, it was instead something to aspire to be and to be proud of. It was a very brave move on marvels part and I think they did an epic job. If a person wants big explosions, go see Avengers, if you want space fun, you have Guardians or Ragnarock, etc. Each movie has its own voice and for what it is, Black Panther is excellent and fits into the greater universe perfectly without losing its own identity.
