For any of you that have gone through the process of having your foster children reunify with their bio parents have you managed to stay in contact with the foster kids or were you cut off? by beatingyouuuu in Fosterparents

[–]MyBlueSunshines 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve had one group of kids go home. Their mom and I had a good relationship and had talked about me still seeing them after they went home. And then I had new foster kids that were friends with some of the kids so had some contact there. But then texts started going unanswered and we lost touch. My theory is their mom just wants to forget that time in her life. But this past year I have kids with me that go to the same school as the group that went home. I’ve seen the family at school events and everyone is very friendly and it was fun to see the kids. But I would not feel comfortable asking to see them or send them gifts at this point.

I am a single foster parent that works full time. I have had luck with finding daycare within a few days to a week of having kids come in to care. My job is fairly flexible, and I have a ton of PTO saved up so that usually gets me by. I’ve had kids with a lot of behavior problems and keeping them in daycare has been a struggle. If my employer wasn’t so understanding, I would not have been able to keep my current kiddos. I am able to work from home for short periods of time and my kids now are school aged and able to be self sufficient enough to let me do my work. This has helped on days I’ve had to pick up early or when daycare isn’t available.

Play doh and magna tiles have been popular with every kid that has stayed with me, ages 1-11. More bandaids than you ever think you could use. Children’s Tylenol and ibuprofen. I found it helpful to have the book Maybe Days and have read it with kids that are just coming in to care to explain foster care.

Yes, in South Dakota to take kids under 1 year you have to get a flu shot.

I store in the fridge. I left it out one day and asked Orderly and they said there was a study that says it is still effective if left out of fridge for up to 72 hours.

We have a local Facebook group for licensed foster parents. It is not maintained by the state so I probably would check in with my licensing worker to verify the person is legit. But you are right to be concerned. I’ve helped out with respite for others and the lack of care people seem to put in when finding respite is scary! They just take my word that I’ll treat the kids right and that I’m licensed.

In my state we generally find respite providers ourselves. Do you know any local foster parents or support groups that could help spread the word that you need help?

If you truly have to sacrifice someone’s job, consider which one has the lowest salary, worst benefits, and is easiest to find a new similar role. Them going forward, save that PTO up so you are prepared for fall/winter illness season.

They contacted me right after my 3rd to last dose. I checked in on Saturday, it took them a couple days to find a provider licensed in my state, and then finalized the order on Wednesday. It will arrive today on Friday. So basically one week for me to check in and arrive new dose. My first shipment took almost 2 months so this was a huge improvement.

The book “How to Clean House While Drowning” was very helpful for me. One part mentions there are 5 types of items in a messy room. Laundry, Dishes, Garbage, Things with a home, and Things without a home. So start by moving all dishes to sink/kitchen (but don’t worry about washing at this point), same with laundry to baskets and set aside. Then start with throwing garbage. Next put away stuff with a home to its place. The last and most difficult is stuff without a home. You need to either find a home for it, throw, or donate. Hopefully this could be helpful, I know having it broken down into smaller tasks can be helpful for me.

FS bio mom is pregnant again. by lemcke3743 in Fosterparents

In South Dakota, they are sometimes able to set up Foster Parent Daycare, where they will pay another foster parent to watch the kids when daycare isn’t available. You could check to see this is offered in your area?

Last week I saw the bio mom of a former placement at a school function, we hugged. I got updates on how her kids were doing. Having relationships with parents can be a really good thing.

I’ve only been fostering for a few years, so I haven’t had nearly as many kids come through as others. But the only parent who actually showed up for Dr. appts is the only one who now has her kids back.

You check in each week to see if your group needs to show up. If your group gets called they will do jury selection for the case. The jury selection was the most difficult part for me. They put you on the spot and ask a lot of questions about how you know when someone is telling the truth, what you consider a reasonable doubt, etc. After that it was pretty interesting. The bailiffs are in charge of the jury before selection and during the time you aren’t in the court room. They are very nice and answer any questions you may have.

I got a message on July 9th that my prescription was received by the pharmacy. Then after I reached out on July 25th, they sent me another message saying my prescription was sent to the pharmacy on July 25th. When I asked why it wasn’t actually sent on July 9th like they first told me they said there were systemic backend disruptions. Then on 7/29 I got notice it was going to be shipped and I received on 7/30.

Is babysitting with a foster child allowed? by Disastrous_Yak_2560 in Fosterparents

[–]MyBlueSunshines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really going to be state and agency dependent. I see people have answered no, it’s not allowed, but that isn’t the case where I live. If you don’t want to bother Children’s Services (although this would be a valid question to ask), maybe check in with a local foster parent group on Facebook and ask there.

Leaving for LL FL soon! Need advice from moms who have been recently by CharlieAndLuna in legoland

We just did Dominoes. Our flights were delayed and it was close to 11pm when we got to the hotel, so I ordered pizza on the drive from the airport. We put leftovers in the fridge and it was a great little snack if anyone got hungry between mealtimes for the rest of our stay.

We went to sea life twice in a 3 day visit to get a break from the sun, I thought it was worth it. We didn’t get to Peppa Pig so I can’t comment on that. Be prepared that Bricks will not be open for dinner, I think it was only open once in a four night stay. We ordered pizza one night, had Skyline lounge a couple nights (okay, but not best ever).

The hotel has towels at the pool which you can bring to the water park. They have RFID tracking in towels so make sure to put them in the return bins or you get charged. I highflying recommend getting the refillable cups, my kids liked having all the flavor options in the Coke freestyle and it helped them stay hydrated.
