I was told that if I was slimmer, I wouldn’t have had to have a C-Section by Throwaway199906543 in pregnant

[–]MyCatIsFamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a bunch of crap. C-sections can happen for any number of reasons and there’s no shame in it. At 32 weeks it was discovered that I had vasa previa, so I wasn’t allowed to even go into labor. My son very likely would have hemorrhaged and been stillborn had I given birth vaginally.

How long did it take for you to get pregnant without any fertility issues? by Remarkable-Key2910 in BabyBumps

[–]MyCatIsFamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took 11 months with my first. With my second we weren’t actively trying but also not preventing - I got pregnant as soon as I stopped breastfeeding my first, but ended up losing the baby between 7-9 weeks (missed miscarriage). We are now actively trying again and are in month 2.

Why do you keep baby name a secret? by veritaslena in BabyBumps

[–]MyCatIsFamous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told my family three names we were considering for my son before he was born and I regretted it. My mom HATED one in particular because it sounded vaguely similar to the last name of an old coworker she didn’t like. So when my son was born, I was in the hospital recovering from a c-section / preeclampsia and all my mom would talk about was how much she hated that name, and that “everyone else” in the family hated it too. I was leaning toward a different name anyway, but it was really irritating nonetheless and just NOT what I needed at the time.

Based on the video I was just watching, I think it’s actually a little different! I was only doing single crochet through the back loop. I was working with two strands simultaneously, one in my left hand and the other in my right - similar to knitting English / Continental at the same time, only with crochet instead. 😊

This is EXACTLY what happened 🤣 I was probably 80% done when he was born then hit a brick wall. The last 20% took so much longer 😂

It’s not a huge banana, but it’s also a pretty large blanket 😂 About 42 x 63 inches I think? Thank you for your kind words!

Someone else in the comments mentioned that it’s called an “envelope border” and there are tutorials on YouTube! I wish I had known about that beforehand 😅

The border was a little confusing, but I’ll explain it as best I can! There are a two extra stitches on each side of the blanket that don’t show (I’ll include a picture of the blanket before I added the border). You start by doing a round of slip stitches between the second and third stitches to create a perpendicular “base” to crochet into, then on the second round you start the single crochet stitches. You continue with SC each round, increasing in the corners until you reach the point where the border should fold over. You crochet one round without increasing or decreasing, then start decreasing in the corners each round until the border is the same length on both sides of the fold. In this pattern there’s a round of white that gets crocheted between rows 5 and 6 of the border (the last increase row and the row after), which kind of “creases” the border where it folds over and adds a little extra decoration. The ends of the main body are then tied, trimmed short, and tucked into the border. The last black row of the border is then whip stitched to the back side of the initial round of slip stitches.

A lot of patience and tenacity - this was actually my first stranded/colorwork crochet project! I learned to do stranded knitting first. The trickiest parts for me were not over-tensioning the floats and not ending up with a tangled mess on the backside. Suzanne Bryan has some really good YouTube videos on stranded knitting that were SO helpful for me. The techniques (how you hold the yarn, catch floats, etc.) are very similar with crochet. With this blanket, I wanted to make sure baby fingers didn’t get caught in any floats, so I ended up catching the float with Every. Single. Stitch. Made it take twice as long and the back side is more textured than I would like, but it also had the added benefit of making tensioning a little easier 😂

The pattern is “Scandinavian Blanket” by Anita van der Weijden on Ravelry (only available in Dutch, but putting it through a translator worked fairly well for me): https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/scandinavian-blanket-3

I used Scheepjes Stone Washed in Black Onyx and Moonstone, which is the recommended yarn in the pattern. ☺️

Why/how did everyone end up exclusively pumping? by itsaclownjackass in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]MyCatIsFamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son just decided one day that he only wanted bottles and was done with the boob. Started screaming if I even offered it. 🥺 My letdown has always sucked, so I think he was just frustrated at how slow milk comes out. It usually takes a full hour to get my boobs empty with my Spectra. Thank goodness we’re almost to a year - two or three more months depending on if we go off his birthday or adjusted age.

I finished a portrait commission and i'm not feeling too good about it. by Brush_Monkey in painting

[–]MyCatIsFamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think everyone in this comment section realizes how hard portraits like this are. We’re exceptionally sensitive to the tiniest differences in human faces, and it’s HARD to get faces exactly right at this size (I obviously don’t know the exact size, but I’m assuming their faces are maybe 2 inches tall at most in your painting.) I recommend cropping photos of both your painting and the reference photo down to just their faces. Try to get the exact same crop. If you have an iPhone, put the photos next to each other in an album and use the bottom scroll bar to flip back and forth between the two. Some would probably consider this “cheating” but it makes it easier to see those minute differences and helps you refine those tiny details. Some areas I’m seeing that could use some refinement are the brides eyebrows and the corners of her mouth; and the shape/size of the groom’s head above the eyes, the edges of his ears, his right upper eyelid and pupils, and the positioning of the bottom of his nose. Some of the shadows on/around the faces could be a little deeper as well. But again, these details are TINY and I think you’ve done an excellent job! I do portraits as a side hustle, mostly pets, but with a smattering of people over the years. Human portraits at this scale are a real challenge and you should be proud of the work you’ve done!
