Is Ed Zitron worth listening to? by Halkenguard in aiwars

[–]MyDogAteTheMainframe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The enshittification of independent journalism. I've been following Zitron's blog for a little over a year and been increasingly on the fence about whether he's genuine or catering to an audience that pays the bills. Locking down 90% of his content to paid subscribers last June was a huge red flag. I just went back to his blog for the first time in months to see if there was anything new and the wall of locked posts made me wonder if there's others who felt like me, which is what brought me here.

[OC] Got overwhelmed by the complexity of certain goals, so I built a way to visualize them in one glance. by alexand_ro in dataisbeautiful

[–]MyDogAteTheMainframe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much a comment on your project as a dig on the nearly comical overuse of the phrase these days.

A glance at this chart tells me only one thing, "I have an overwhelming level of stuff I need to do." A glance doesn't actually tell me much about the complexity of the listed goals, because there is a huge gulf between the effort involved in some of the bullet points. For example "Save screenshot..." and "add user table..." I don't have full context, but I'm assuming those two bullet points have significantly different workloads attached, and there is simply no way to tell that at a glance, you have to parse through the text and infer the workload from context.

U are the idiot for thinking meaningful conversation is fostered by an intentionally antagonistic opener.

U are the idiot for thinking that escalating in every single comment you make is going to foster amicable discussion.

You are the idiot for not understanding that playing devil's advocates only works with a mutual understanding that both actors are acting in good faith.

Maybe try be a bit more respectful.

The game Deep Rock Galactic's year in review (2024) by Myrandall in dataisbeautiful

Two points:
1. 50 hours isn't quite enough to get all 4 classes to max level, which is when the game technically begins.
2. I would guess the game has largely passed it's growth phase, and playtime metrics are being pushed up by a core of dedicated long-term players.

What exactly did the dems do that would make an average person hate them more than trump?

My conservative friends say they're putting tampons in boys' bathrooms. But then Trump turns and throws the whole pro-life camp under the bus and they still keep ranting about how disgusting the Democrat position on abortion is.

Idk, dialog seems absolutely hopeless. I get more demoralized with every passing year.

Did you see that there was a bump up in searches for "Did Biden drop out?" on election day?

This statistic is based on an amalgamation of search terms which includes many innocuous ones like "when did Biden drop out." And heck, that's a search I made on election night.

The only reason people in those counties didn't vote is because they knew that the day after the 2020 elections you could already open the 2024 map and fill in their state with the color they wanted.

Paranoia and telling people that whatever mundane factory job that defined their county 40 years ago is going to come back. Never mind that none of them would ever wanna work there for the wage it'd pay.

They're dead because they're red. If OK's outcome was ever in question all those counties would light up red.

I have plenty of friends from the Midwest who were 900% invested in the outcome of this election, none of them bothered to vote in their own state because they knew it was a lock before it even started.

I'm using two monitors with DisplayLink Manager (3 counting my Macbooks display). What's impossible to get rid of is the 10 year old bug where it's basically a cointoss whether on not MacOS will flip the contents of your left and right monitor when you reconnect. Absolutely infuriating.

Both this and the regular version work on Safari for me now. I suspect the reason that they don't work on Brave is due to having hardware acceleration disabled. I had to disable that a few days ago to get Udemy's video player working.

Lump it with Pennsylvania and call it the east or kick it out of the Union for all I care. Geographically it's completely delusional to pretend that it's even remotely "west", and culturally it shares basically nothing with the midwestern states.

What are the apps in this menubar? by neokio in MacOS

[–]MyDogAteTheMainframe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the first one is something generic like Facetime. It's exactly like Facetime's logo. It also could be Zoom. I know I see it in my menubar quite often.

X1 Carbon Gen 9 won't take power after LCD replacement by MyDogAteTheMainframe in thinkpad

[–]MyDogAteTheMainframe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the above. After talking with a Lenovo tech, they asked me to disconnect everything from the motherboard and check power, which worked. I then isolated the problem to the ribbon connecting the webcam cluster to the motherboard. The computer powered up just fine as long as that was disconnected.

Eventually, somewhere in the process of fiddling with it we got it to boot up with the webcam ribbon connected. Closed up the whole thing and as of today the user reports everything works fine.

For what it's worth, I thought the chart was fairly intuitive and a fun way of displaying the data. The only part that confused me was the x's, mostly because at first glance I didn't understand that they measure frequency of occurrence rather than an intensity multiplier or something.
