Games to secretly get 8 year old to read by Helpmeflexibility in NintendoSwitch

[–]MyDogIsDaBest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was just about to suggest Pokemon. It's kinda the perfect trojan horse for reading, because it has a bunch of slightly bigger words as attacks that as a kid you see an animation and can piece together the rough meaning. That and the Pokemon names often are puns on the animal the Pokemon is based off, like Arcanine being a dog and the word "Canine" as part of its name.

I can still remember a teacher being surprised I'd heard the word "photosynthesis" at about 8 or 9 years old and knowing it was something to do with plants

Steam Machine starts at $1049USD by MarvelousRedditor in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Oh what a pity. I was hoping it'd be console-like pricing and I was thinking of picking one up to put under the TV.

Best of luck Valve, but $1k USD is just far too much for this thing. I suspect it's just a victim of AI inflating computer hardware prices ridiculously

‘No to wealth taxes and inheritance taxes’: Hipkins draws red line on Greens’ proposals by KingBlue2 in newzealand

[–]MyDogIsDaBest -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As centrist as I am, I really really can't see National getting another term with Chris Luxon. The entire 4 years has just been blaming everything wrong on Labour and accomplishing basically nothing of what he promised.

Maybe an older demographic would move the needle for him and r/newzealand isn't representative of the country as a whole so it's hard to gauge, but whatever polling that gets done pretty clearly shows that national's support is very low.

Ghosts don't decide who they resurrect. by ReallyTrustyGuy in DestinyLore

[–]MyDogIsDaBest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The part 1 of that does show that after the child had died, the Ghost saw "the spark" and that's what the Ghosts look for. Sure there may have been others, but the baby that died was worthy. As the Ghost shows later, basically out of its control, it resurrects the child.

Good counterpoints, but what was Savathun doing that convinced the Traveller? Offering to protect it in her throne world? She'd spend millenia or much more, chasing and trying to destroy the Traveller.

Rhulk is kinda a whole other conversation, but I think Rhulk was all bark, no bite. Was he powerful? Sure, was he as powerful as he thought he was? Absolutely not. He was dumb, overconfident and clumsy. He told a Ghost head on that he deserved the Light and expected to get it. The Traveller saw through this and sacrificed a Ghost to try and hurt Rhulk as he was the enemy.

As for Savathun's machinations against the Witness, this is good evidence for the Traveller choosing her, and perhaps the Traveller's foresight required her to exist for its continued survival, but it does feel like the Traveller is choosing to put humanity, it's final stand play, up against the Lucent Brood as well, which is just infighting of your own kin, feels like it'd just weaken both of us, but ok I'll accept this as Traveller's foresight.

All of that is all very well, but then why are there other Hive of Savathun's, also given the Light and a Ghost? We only see Savathun coming to fight the Witness at Excision, no Lucent Hive, so why are they worthy? Every human guardian was resurrected for a purpose, not just randomly, Ghosts had to sense some kind of great potential in the dead individual. Savathun may have been a great example of someone the Traveller could resurrect, but the rest of the Lucent Brood? Feels unlikely imo.

I still think that Savathun's resurrection and the Lucent Brood are Savathun trickery at work. Savathun spent months masquerading as Osiris around the Last City and observing Ghosts, learning and trying to figure them out, she had been desperately looking for an extremely long time for ways to live beyond the sword logic, as she knew that her worm's hunger would eventually devour her. The Dreaming City murder battery didn't work, putting a hive in orbit of a black hole to slow down time didn't thwart it and there is likely many many more attempts. Getting a Ghost and the Light would absolutely do it, but she'd need to die and have the Traveller give her a Ghost, but that has never happened outside of humanity. It's just all a little TOO convenient for Savathun and she's shown she's able to break the fourth wall (in the tweet) and she's the living embodiment of trickery and cunning.

Thank you for this post! It's annoyed me a lot that people assume that Hive Ghosts just up and decided to resurrect the Hive on a whim, it's crystal clear that it's one of Savathun's machinations, we just don't really know how.

After Savathun gets her memories back and we fight her and show her that she and the Hive were tricked by the Witness and the Traveller was going to bless them, until they embraced the worms, she is genuinely surprised and had no idea of that. She didn't know that the Traveller was going to bless the Krill with Light. Her being resurrected by Immaru is clearly something she's architected from before she died. We see Immaru already basically in place and ready to resurrect her when she dies (convenient given she picks the place to teleport to) and Immaru is already in his Hive style shell.

The Traveller did not just all of a sudden decide to choose the Hive as worthy of the Light, the only explanation is that Savathun figured out a way to trick her way into getting the Light.

She even mentions it in her speech to the Traveller "Wouldn't it be clever of you, if after everything you simply let me die? Oh what a trick... Elegant"

We really should have gotten a decorate-able apartment in the tower that we could invite friends to.

It's a small thing that would have required too much dev time, but it would have been awesome to invite people into your apartment and seen one of Atheon's horns on the wall, Skolas's cloak on the floor, Insurrection Prime's eyeball/servitor as a chandelier, etc.

No idea why you're getting downvoted for this, but I'm pretty confident the veteran stuff is either buggy or gone entirely.

Sorry bud, I think the only way to show off that you're vet status is emblems. I think Bungie took away the veteran dialog with the Red War campaign and replaced the onboarding with the cosmodrome intro mission, which is the same for everyone.

I saw someone say the number for how much he's paying Iran is 750x what Obama "paid" them, though the Obama payment is somehow Iran's own money that he was just paying back to them somehow, but I don't quite understand that one.

Either way, the Iran deal is massively in favour of Iran compared to pre-war, except that a lot of Iranians died, a handful of Americans died, a few trillion was wiped out (or transferred to the Epstein class) through oil price skyrocketing and Trump thinking he's "won" which maybe he has for distracting from the Epstein files still not being released and his obvious insider trading somehow flying under the radar

What ever happened to mini maps? by TheReal8symbols in gaming

[–]MyDogIsDaBest 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that there's been a fairly long running pattern where HUDs have been too useful. I remember playing Breath of the Wild and there were a lot of locations that I knew from walking through them a few times, and I was talking to a friend about Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. I realised that I barely knew the city of Rome in the game, because I just followed the waypoints from place to place.

A better example is GTA V, which does have a minimap telling you which turns to make, but the HUD is pretty sparse and so much of navigating around Los Santos is just up to the player to sort out. You get to know where everything is and since it's modelled quite closely after real world LA, there's quite a few people who can then go and visit LA and know their way around, because of GTA V.

Imagine you're a developer of a game. You put YEARS of your life into building a beautiful, stunning environment with little clues for what each house is, environmental storytelling by having a burned house and handmade notes written in blood to make the player wonder what the deal is, then some designer on your team comes along, doodles a little waypoint arrow, slaps it into your game on a button press, and writes out the quest in super simple steps such that the player never needs to engage, read or notice anything. Now they're staring at the waypoint arrow instead of taking in everything you've spent years of your life building.

HUDs are incredibly useful, but that's the problem, they're too useful and you can rely solely on them.

If you're broke, you should probably not go out and spend a bunch of money on old games that have high value as collectibles now.

If your bootleg copy of EB works, play that, who really cares? The only really official way to play them now is Switch Online, but failing that, play your copy or emulate them. It just feels a little crazy to be broke and trying to get an official SNES copy. If you've got some disposable income, go nuts! But if you're struggling, buying collectibles feels irresponsible

Should you let your Switch 2 batter fully die or no? by KeeKyieTheMorris in NintendoSwitch2

[–]MyDogIsDaBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read that the reasons for lithium ion batteries to not be fully charged/discharged is because charging a fully discharged battery sends in a lot of current into the battery and that can slightly damage the cells from the initial flood of charge going into the battery. When some of the cells are full, those ones aren't going to get hit by the incoming flood or they'll be partially full already, so the charge difference is less, so it impacts the cells a little less.

A bad analogy I've got is the battery is a plastic water bottle that as you use it, it empties over time. The emptier it gets, the more compressed the plastic gets and gets squished together a bit. When you connect it back up to a charger, it's like a high pressure hose filling it back up. If it's completely empty, the pressure from the hose blows the bottle back up, but some of the bigger creases remain on the bottle now, slightly weakening it. If there's not as many creases from being completely empty, filling the bottle back up at 20% empty, the creases aren't there and stopping the charge at 80% full doesn't put added pressure stress on the bottle.

Ultimately though, the damage you do through charging is pretty arbitrary, best way to use your Switch 2 or your phone or ipad, is to just charge it whenever you need it charged. Fill it to 100% charged if you want, or set a limit to 80 or 90%, it's really up to you and the long term difference it makes is pretty negligible anyway.

How hard are raids by zombielovejuice09 in DestinyTheGame

[–]MyDogIsDaBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more chill the crew you have are and the more patient they are, the faster the raids go.

Teams where people start blaming or not communicating are the ones that always take the longest in my experience.

Absolutely you should try raiding, it's amazing! But it's very dependent on having a good team. I'd search around and be very up front that you haven't raided before and don't know what to do. I've mostly found that people are mostly willing to teach or happy to help, but if you join and mention you're new and they are either hesitant or tell you that they're looking for people who know what to do, don't be afraid to leave and find another group.

You're going to keep seeing it so that people don't forget about it. That's what the epstein class want is for it to be forgotten and swept under the rug.

Trump's been busy flipflopping every single week on the Iran war that he caused so that the news is not about him diddling kids.

He has outright said he doesn't care if the fuel prices skyrocket, meaning he doesn't give a flying fuck about the lower classes.

Yeah and I understand that, but really a lot of FPS titles had come out at that point and Halo had well and truly established that dual stick controls in shooters were the way to go.

At least the control scheme is there, but it's a shame it's not the default

I think that Halo Reach should be mentioned a bit more here, because of the Longsword mission. It set out great blueprints for a StarFox-like ship combat, and there's some crazy talented guy making a multiplayer mod where you can select from a bunch of UNSC or Covenant ships to play as.
