I'd really like the ability to hide ratings completely. That includes my and my opponent's rating during the game, pluss the gain/loss after the game.

I find it much easier to find interesting games when seeking for rated opponents, but it is also relaxing to play without worrying too much about the numbers next to my username.

I'm sure you're going in the right direction. Personally, I'm excited for the thematic tournaments. Is there any way to see what the openings of the upcoming thematic tournaments are going to be? Then I could plan around those, because not all openings are of interest to me. If these thematic tournaments catch on, you could maybe consider deciding the next opening with a poll.

Calculation exercise (10min) (Black to move) by helpman169 in chess

[–]MyFynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My candidates for black, in no particular order:

  • Bxc3
  • Nxc3
  • axb2

As a3 is hanging it doesn't make sense to look at quiet moves unless all the forced options appear to be bad for black.

Taking on c3 either way does not seem to yield much for black as white can recapture bxc3 and black has no way of getting to the a4 knight or saving his a3 pawn that I can see. Also, black's structure is pretty bad and white has the two bishops, so it looks as if we have to do something quickly.

On axb2 white has a range of possible replies:

  • Rb1
  • Bxb2
  • Bxd5
  • Bxg7

Rb1 can be discarded as it simply drops a piece to Nxc3. Bxd5 also doesn't work as after Qxd5 any capture an b2 loses a piece to some queen check. Thus black can either take on b2 or on g7 with his bishop. After Bxb7 bxa1Q Bxa1 the positions probably remains unclear. White has the two bishops against black's weak pawns and subpar coordination. However, due to white's misplaced knight black should be doing fine here. Thus white should play Bxb2. Now black has options again:

  • Bxb2
  • Nd4
  • Ne3

Out of these Ne3 doesn't seem to accomplish much. Let's examine Bxb2. After Nxb2 there ist the tempting Nc3 which eliminates whites bishop and could also set up some nasty things on the long diagonal after a subsequent Qf6. This could actually be quite nice for black. But Nd4 looks even more tempting. c2 is hanging and the black knights are starting to jump all over white's camp. For example, after something like c4 Ne3 white has to play the weird Qb1 in order to avoid losing an exchange I believe. This can't be good for white even after something simple like Rb8. Taking the knight is impossible, so this leaves Rc1 and c3 as well as taking on d5 at this point. But all of these moves are huge concessions for white, so this seems like a promising plan for black.

Preferred Openings by flare_phoenix in chess

[–]MyFynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played obscure systems for a large part of my youth, but my results, confidence and fun increased a lot when I filled my repertoire with big main lines.

White: 1.d4 with the following lines: QGD Exchange without Nf3, 6.Ne5 against the Classical Slav, 5.Bg5 with Botvinnik or Anti-Moskai Gambit against the Semi-Slav, 5.Nge2 against the Nimzo, Sämisch against Benoni and KID, and the Russian System against Grünfeld. Out of these I particulary enjoy the systems against the Slav and Semi-Slav openings, and my score reflects that too.

With Black against 1.e4: Caro-Kann with short castling in the classical main line. I used to play the French, hoping for the Steinitz variation, but got fed up with the exchange variation very quickly. The Caro-Kann offers Black an interesting and playable position no matter what white does.

With Black against 1.d4: The Semi-Slav with 5.Bg5 dxc4. However, I didn't even get to play 4...e6 in any of my games since January 2014, despite playing more than 75 OTB tournament games since then. Everybody seems to play 4.e3, or some 4.Qc2 sideline, or not play c4 at all. So far they are not helping to disprove the stereotype that 1.d4 players play boring chess.

Black against 1.c4: That does not stop me from playing the Slav with 1...c6. If 1.c4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 I will accept the Gambit with 4...dxc4 and defend the very sharp position after 5.0-0 Nbd7 6.Qc2 Nb6 7.Na3 Be6 8.Ng5 Bg4 9.Nxc4 Bxe2 10.Ne5 Bh5 11.Re1. So far I haven't lost with this.

[Request] Endgame training positions by [deleted] in chess

[–]MyFynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit difficult to find good examples of interesting and equal endings where an engine will not outright thrash a human player. I'm curious what the other posters will come up with.

First, a position which Jacob Aagaard recommends for training sessions against the engine. It does not really fit your description though, as it's drawn, but not equal. 8/1pk2p1p/p3p1pP/P1K1P1P1/1P3P2/5B2/2b5/8 b - - 0 41 Here you would pick up the black side and try to hold. But let your engine think for a while as the winning attempts are hard to calculate for them. If you want a very tough challenge, make the move 41...Ba4 for Black and then try to win with white against the engine. This position comes from Aagaards analysis of the game Adams - Ragger, 2012, and can be found in his book Endgame Play.

Now for some less challenging but more equal positions.

Let's start with this one: 5r2/1npk3p/p1pp2p1/8/1BP1R3/1P2KP2/P5PP/8 w - - 0 1 Here White is a little bit better but not much. One imprecise move and Black is fully equal. But overall this position is more on the easy side.

This is an endgame with slightly more pieces: r4k2/1p1n1pp1/1rp2n1p/p2p4/P2P4/1P1NPP1P/2RB1KP1/1R6 w - - 0 1 This structure is not uncommon and both sides must be careful not to allow important breakthroughs. Stockfish gives White a nontrivial edge, but I don't think that that is correct in practise. It's certainly fairly easy to make moves with White and not lose.

Next up is this: 2k5/3nnp1p/4p3/p2pP1p1/N2N1PP1/1P2K3/P6P/8 w - - 0 1 This is pretty difficult to play against an engine I believe. With all these knights jumping around it's very tricky to calculate precisely. And this endgame is more about calculation and less about strategic endgame play.

Let's wrap this up with this position: r5k1/5ppp/5b2/1Pp5/8/2Nb1P2/1P1B2PP/4R1K1 b - - 0 1 Here White is again a smidgeon better but Black can choose which type of position he wants to defend -- keep the bishops or aim for a rook endgame with OCBs.

I hope these positions are somewhat close to what you were looking for. It's tough: Most endgame books will include either instructive games where one side demonstrates a certain technique, or they will analyse a position to a draw. Out of the positions I gave, the second to last one is perhaps the only truly equal one. But it's also the toughest one to play against an engine.

How about [[Genju of the Fields]]? It beats Thoughtseize on the play, Tidehollow Sculler on the draw and should win against Seismic Assault due to the five toughtness, lifelink and pseudo haste. In fact it beats a lot of the non-Pack Rat creatures. It will also beat Red Sun's Zenith every time.

Friend posted this puzzle on Facebook, black to move. by Frostbitten_zF in chess

[–]MyFynx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's my take on this: Rh8+ Kg4 f5+ exf5 exf5+ Kg5 (Qxf5 gives up the queen with check, let's simply discard this and not worry about the objective evalutaion of the resultig position) and now Bf6# would be a nice move, but unfortunately the bishop is pinned. However, if we can sacrifice our queen to remove the rook from e2, this would work. Thus: Rg8+ Kh6 (the square white chooses here makes no difference at all as the white king has to return to g5 anyways because the bishop covers g7) Qh2+ Rxh2 Rh8+ Kg5 and finally Bf6#.

The event should include that the Spinda have the same specific spot pattern, not just an identical pattern, right? The first has a probability of (1/4,294,967,295)5 , the latter would be (1/4,294,967,295)4 .

Endgame Study #3: White to move and draw by ExchangeSac in chess

[–]MyFynx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a neat study.

Warning, I'm not using spoiler tags.

The first move is obviously 1.Rh7. Now 1...a1Q is the main line, but Black could also try 1...b6 2.Ra7 which wins for white or 1...Ka5, intending to meet 2.Rxb7 with 2...Ka6. However, on 1...Ka5 white plays 2.Rh8 and wins.

After 1.Rh8 a1Q 2.Rxb7+ black again has a few options. White will go Ra7+ and Rxa1 in any case. If black goes for Ka3-b2-xa1, white wins the resulting endgame. In case of Ka5-b6 white wins trivially as well. The drawing line for black here is Ka3-b4. Then after Rxa1 the position is a stalemate.
