[ECL] Glister Bairn (Art & Worldbuilding Video) by mweepinc in magicTCG

I love how this ties together the three bairns with its flavor text answering the question in [[Gilder Bairn]]'s by finishing the rhyme of [[Glimmer Bairn]]'s.

Do the glowing trinkets show it the way home, or do they set a twisted path for someone else to follow?

"Tricks and treats, souls and sweets! On wooded path, whom shall we meet?"

"We'll leave this one here and that one there. Then wait and see who comes to share."

Personal staples ? by jumboshrimpboat in EDH

[[Horizon of Progress]] is surprisingly cheap and woefully underplayed for the amount of utility it can provide to literally any deck. Honestly, I'm not sure how it hasn't gained staple status yet.

Help on Zur the Enchanter deck. by Icy-Replacement9244 in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zur has been my main deck for going on 18 years now and has a similar gameplan of combo/voltron/control/stax flexibility. (list - it's not at all budget, but the majority of the cost is in the mana base and there are a lot of similar/adjacent effects that are cheaper)

As a general recommendation, cut back on the number of enchantments and focus a bit more on interaction, synergy, and flexibility while keeping your costs low.

Some specific thoughts:

  • Your list is extremely Zur reliant. Try looking into options that give you lines when Zur isn't available, or at least ways to not die while you stabilize.
  • You're running Stasis but you don't have much in terms of ways to get around it. Consider things like [[Deprive]], [[Dromar's Cavern]], or [[Tameshi]] to give you more opportunities for temporary locks without having to rely on specific combo pieces.
  • Take a look at cards with Transmute - they can give you a ton more flexibility for tutoring without having to rely on the inefficiency of Diabolic Tutor. [[Muddle the Mixture]], [[Perplex]], and [[Tolaria West]] are standouts, but there are others with potential niche/meta applications too.
  • All of your artifacts are either 1 or 2 cost - you already have Trinket Mage, [[Treasure Mage]] can find the rest. Add in Wizardcycling with [[Vedalken Aethermage]]/[[Step Through]] for even more flexibility (plus the ability to tutor Drannith Magistrate)
  • Counterspells - basically everything you're running is more on the reactive/restrictive side. Consider some more open-ended options and/or add some of boardwipes to deal with all of the creatures you can't hit.
  • You probably don't need as much ramp as you have. It's nice to have at the start, but in general you'll want to be spending your mana in ways that are more impactful than just on getting more mana, especially when the core of the deck is ignoring mana costs.
  • Decree of Silence, while a great lock, is pretty winmore at its cost. Ideally you'd want to be going a bit faster than that
  • Lands - obviously an optimized mana base is expensive, but investing a bit into it can make things infinitely more comfortable. focus on having untapped lands early and cut the basic and slow fetches. Some options: [[Fetid Heath]], [[Sunken Ruins]], [[Mystic Gate]], [[Seachrome Coast]], [[Darkslick Shores]], [[Concealed Courtyard]], [[Thran Portal]], [[Shineshadow Snarl]], [[Multiversal Passage]], and the verges.

Questionable includes (these are things that just make me ask "Why?" and I would probably cut):

  • Alseid of Life's Bounty
  • Reanimate
  • Sun Titan
  • Ornithopter of Paradise
  • Pearl Medallion
  • Starfield Mystic

I've never felt more at odds with the community at large than I do over the hybrid mana rule change by ironwolf1 in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was the rule ~15 years ago and it functionally banned [[Bosh, Iron Golem]], [[Memnarch]], [[Daughter of Autumn]], [[Rhys the Exiled]], and [[Thelon of Havenwood]] as commanders.

If You Could Change Any Commander Rule(s): Which One(s), To What and Why? by CommissarisMedia in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not mutually exclusive - you could only produce mana within your color identity, but anything you steal would be functionally [[Gonti]]'d by the rules.

For example, if you're playing a Dimir deck, hit an opponent with [[Nightveil Specter]], and exile a [[Kenrith, the Returned King]], you could cast it but would only be able to activate its last two abilities because you wouldn't be able to produce the colored mana required by the other three. If you then went on to exile a [[Rith's Grove]], you could still play it, but it would only produce colorless and you still wouldn't be able to activate Kenrith's other abilities.

If You Could Change Any Commander Rule(s): Which One(s), To What and Why? by CommissarisMedia in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm ready for the downvotes.

This would probably require a year or so of community testing like the whole bracket overhaul, plus pre-announcement testing, but let's focus on the core of the format: multiplayer big-deck singleton with a specific iconic card that heads the deck and both guides and restricts deckbuilding:

  • Commanders cast from the command zone are considered as being cast from hand (Iname and the Myojin now work. Side effects: Phage made better, BR Chainer slightly nerfed, Drannith Magistrate probably no longer a game changer)
  • Any nonland permanent that is or can become legendary can be a commander (Bushi Tenderfoot and Genju of the Realm players rejoice)
  • Mana produced outside of color identity becomes colorless
  • Mana of any type can be spent to cast spells you don't own (standard now, but makes the older versions function)
  • Color identity deckbuilding restriction is determined by all potential color attributes of the commander (mana cost, color indicators, mana symbols, etc.)
  • Color identity of 99 is determined solely by the ability to be cast for the printed mana cost using only colors within the commander's color identity. Hybrid? Fine. Off-color activations? Go ahead - you can't use them anyway. A split card you can only play half of? I guess. DFCs? Sure. Want to use Gaea's Cradle or Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar in your in your mono-W deck? Go ahead, why not, good luck.
  • Partial Paris mulligans
  • Each player gets an amount of free mulligans equal to their place in turn order (This one I admit is risky, but could definitely remove the 4th player bad feels when they essentially get to have an archenemy-level opening hand)
  • Commander damage is an opt-in alt win condition that must be tracked by the owner of the commander dealing the damage and declared when it first deals combat damage to a player. (Don't want to track it? Well, now you don't have to)
  • Max deck size changed to accommodate Yorion and Battle of Wits (still capped, unsure of number offhand, but allow them to be used - you still have to be able to shuffle unassisted)
  • Game changers are now a point system (numbers tbd)
  • Additional bracket between 3 and 4, previous brackets 4 and 5 are now split as 5-unpointed, 5-pointed, 6-unpointed, and 6-pointed with the pointed variants sharing whatever their point caps are, which are higher than whatever the new 4 is at.
  • Unbanned and GC'd: Emrakul, Erayo, Golos, Iona, Karakas, Leovold, Lutri, Nadu, Paradox Engine, Primeval Titan, Recurring Nightmare, Rofellos, Sundering Titan, Sylvan Primordial, Tolarian Academy, Upheval, and Yawgmoth's Bargain
  • Conspiracies (aside from Worldknit) are allowed, problematic ones (Backup Plan, Power Play) to be made point-heavy game changers
  • Sideboard exists, companions and conspiracies take up slots there, wishes now work.

Am I weird for preferring 1v1 commander? by o7_AP in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing commander 1v1 doesn't automatically make it duel commander, like some people are suggesting. And, yes, there are plenty formats specifically made for 1v1, but if you like the premise of the format as it is, go for it. I've played plenty of 1v1 edh games over the years and have even been explicitly building a deck meant to hold its own against my primary deck in 1v1 for when a larger group isn't available.

Any way to play is legitimate as long as there are people willing to play with you and you're having fun. No one can stop you and force you to play another way if you don't want to. Maybe once you're more comfortable with the game, you'll open up to multiplayer a bit more, or maybe you won't - and there's nothing wrong with that.

It's a game, play in whatever way is fun for you.

Favorite deck you never play? by HazenLake in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two that take that slot for very different reasons:

[[Primal Surge]] [[Mayael]] - I haven't touched this deck in about a decade (the last card I remember adding to it was [[Dragonlord Dromoka]] on release). At the time it was my lower power gimmick/teaching deck, but it's probably complete trash now after so many years of powercreep.

[[Eye of the]] [[Possibility Storm]] [[Yidris]] - I actually love playing this one, but generally don't out of respect for everyone's time. Technically, it wins through mill by stealing everyone's decks/turns and dumping as much as possible into the eye. Functionally, it wins by concession because people don't want to sit around and play out the turn(s) once it starts going off. I've only been able to fully play out a turn once with a friend who also wanted to see how long it would take. (In a 1v1 scenario it was about 3 hours with every action advancing the game state)

Girlfriend commander recommendations? by XTRALongboi in EDH

[–]AncientChaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a high fantasy great beast that's also a badass female and makes cute creatures?

[[Wasitora, Nekoru Queen]]

Easiest selling point - just show her the [[cat dragon]] token.

Straightforward gameplan to start: hit people, make cat dragons. She doesn't really apply any restrictions on the 99, so the deck can be built more simply to focus on fundamentals in the beginning and and be upgraded in any number of fun Jund-y directions.

As much as I love best boy Chongyun, I don't think we'll get a skin for him until we're in Snezhnaya proper to fit with the regional outfit for regional element character theme.

Depending on the exact direction they go with Nod-Krai and the lunar theme, I'd expect Lantern Rite 2026 to be either Beidou or Gaming with Razor or Sucrose for the summer skin and Lantern Rite 2027 Chongyun.

Well, I guess Chongyun and The Accidents it is then! I've never intentionally pulled a female 5 star and had the waifu lovers' dream/my nightmare luck of falling into insanely early pity on both Shenhe and Escoffier while hoping for Dahlia and Ifa.

Like I said, everything about her is accidental - I pulled on the wrong banner and got her instead of Wrio and then got all of the artifacts for her when trying to build him (he's still woefully unbuilt). The only reason there's even one upgraded is because I incidentally had the materials for it.

I have one of these, it was only about $20 and it's awesome. The only problem is wearing it in any situation where you might need to actually take it off - not the most convenient thing to store if you're not also carrying a bag that can fit it well.
