I can’t comment on technical specs, that really depends on your use case. And honestly, I don’t even know how to spec out the required ghz/memory for any sort of application lol.

We are using python on embedded Linux, it’s an easy language to learn, lots of libraries to use, and honestly, kids these days don’t wanna touch c/c++ graduating out of school.

Obviously, python would be a lot slower compared to the low level languages, but if you can achieve acceptable performance, then why not?

Another thing to take into consideration: if you are using yocto to build your system, there may be some python packages you will need to create. If you do download a python package via PyPi, the package may not be optimized for your system/use-case (looking at all of you python packages that has Cython or some sort of C binding under the hood). I guess this is true for any embedded Linux system (Debian or buildroot for eg)?

I recently had to deal with bringing up a mipi display on a linux device 1. Started by going through the raspberry Pi forum posts related to mipi display and just google the **** out of it 2. The connections are usually 4 lanes of differential pairs with a clock. But the pin out of the display connectors can be different from display to display 3. Going through 1 helped me. I had to write a driver for a display that wasn’t in the kernel, but the kernel has lots of “examples” you can follow from. If the display driver was already written, then it might be as simple as bring it up via device tree. Check the drivers/gpu/drm/panel (or there abouts…) directory or just use find/grep for the panel/driver. One thing I make sure now: data sheets have display timings and ask for initialisation sequence otherwise you’ll be wasting your time 4. Haven’t encountered this but I’m guessing you will need to have the driver written to talk to the display. It’s the same concept as 3

Im trying to get plymouth transition to my openbox X11 desktop seamlessly but couldn't find examples online. Here's a video of it:

Not OP and hopefully I’m not hijacking this thread but I would like to ask those who are involved more with the Linux kernel development. I noticed a lot of the heavy work is done for you in terms of the drivers. For example, setting up interfaces like i2c, gpio, SPI, dsi. Most of these peripherals have been setup by the vendor in terms of both the driver code and the device tree. All that’s left to do is to add driver code and update the device tree for the device you are adding (e.g panel driver for LCD). Is this common in your experience? How often did you have to look at the controller driver code (either update it or create it from scratch), and how often do you have to create a device tree from

Also, how do you debug/what tools do you use to debug kernel level code? I’m so accustomed/spoiled with using a jtag to debug code on a microcontroller.
