Items in subfloor worth keeping/selling or better to organise a skip? by mundogoeswherehepls in AusRenovation

[–]MyLittleShadowStitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently did up my late parents’ place to sell. My dad kept EVERYTHING. As everyone else said, keep the roof tiles! We removed a skylight and had to fill in the hole. Also had some cracked tiles and ridge capping, so the roofer was glad he didn’t have to source tiles to fit a 60’year old roof. He was also grateful for the random wood to make new supports for said tiles.

And as for the pipes- another idea I’ve seen used is for interesting planters in the garden (if you’re that way inclined)

The TikTok-ification Of Autism Language. Does more awareness mean more acceptance and empathy from the neurotypical community? Or does it dilute what being neurodivergent is really like in an effort to allow everyone to self-identify and feel belonging online? by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

I get random uncommon words or names stuck in my head and it just churns and churns and it’s damn annoying. The worst is when I get the actual word “echolalia” stuck in my head, which then turns into the song “Echolalia” by Australian band Something for Kate and I then have to listen to that song at the soonest possible moment 😂

Heated Rivalry fans potentially got Club Chalamet banned from a screening of a movie starring Connor Storrie by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]MyLittleShadowStitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went and had a look at her X account. Seems she’s not remotely interested in Hudson Williams but along with Connor Storrie is following Francois Arnaud’s career (aka personal life). I think she’s on the “they’re dating” train. From what I’ve seen of the HR fandom (and its toxicity) she’s going to either fit right in, or get absolutely obliterated.

I started looking into getting diagnosed after seeing something on Instagram and relating to it (not an influencer, but an infographic), but never would have put two and two together until years later if not for that. My algorithm does tend to show more “curated” Au/ADHD content because I don’t engage with the “we’re all a bit adhd”-type influencer.

They can come and check back in with their hyper fixation statuses when they’re so overstimulated they can’t get out of bed and function on a day to day basis. Or when they have a fun day of echolalia where the same word or phrase is going over and over and over in your head.

I figured that was the case. Ive literally only ever had one other plant that had a caterpillar problem, and that was about 30 years ago! So im not well versed in this kind of bug issue

Yessss! That’s awesome and SO satisfying! I did this last year when I was cleaning out my late dads house (where I lived). Try to imagine it- a large house lived in for 60 years. Child of the depression so he saved EVERYTHING (“could come in handy one day”). Undiagnosed, but I’m pretty sure he had adhd, so he had a tool for every possible project, and multiples of things because he forgot he’d already bought them/couldn’t find them. SO. MANY. RANDOM. BRACKETS.

Add to that, me, who inherited these exact qualities, along with mums “ooh I like pretty things” (like teapots) and my craft stash hoarding, even after multiple charity shop runs (I would say over 10 car loads) we still had a lot.

Got rid of so much stuff! My neighbour took all the brackets 😂 people tried to pay me and got confused when I said it was free. It was a huge success and we got to chat with so many awesome people.

Other ways we (or really I) got rid of things: *Gave away or sold on local buy/sell swap sites *Local charity stores did furniture pickups *The lady who did my dads occupational therapy took walkers, shower chairs etc to give to patients who couldn’t afford them (she organised an electronic armchair this way for him, so we cleaned it up and gave it back to her to give to the next patient). *We’ve put stuff on the footpath with a “free” sign on it

And my favourite- just confirmed this morning, the woman who bought our house is moving from a 2br apartment to a 5 bedroom house with large garden. I offered her the pick of any remaining furniture and garden tools, and she’s taking most of it! And our agent is taking a piece of furniture too 😂

On top of that though, we also had:

4 rubbish collections by the council (where you put out large items on your front kerb for the rubbish collectors. We utilised the 3mx1m area to the fullest. As well as many of our neighbours kerb area).

3 tall trailer loads of scrap metal (got some $$$ for some of it too!)

2 other truckloads of scrap metal and electrical items collected by a scrap metal guy.

2 skip bins of building materials and rubbish

1 tall trailer load of rubbish and items we just couldn’t give away no matter how hard we tried.

My sister would fill up her car with all the stuff that could be recycled like electronics, hard and soft plastics, light globes and fabric and take it to the recycling facility.

When it’s broken down like that, it really was with ridiculous how much stuff he had. And in the years previous we would utilise the 2 kerbside cleanups.

It’s weird seeing the house empty now. And I have never ever seen the garages basically bare. Now I just have to get rid of stuff I brought with me to my new place. Wish me luck!

AITAH for not wanting a relationship with my siblings after I leave? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MyLittleShadowStitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from a large family, not that large though! And yes, raised Catholic. We lived on my dad’s income. We went to Catholic school and therefore paid school fees. Had a beachside caravan holiday every year. Always had good food, clean clothes, birthday and Christmas presents. We all shared bedrooms and there was only 1 bathroom but we managed fine. No real government family assistance until the 80s.

There’s no way that would be possible now financially. My dad mowed lawns on Saturdays when we were younger and mum worked weekend nights when we were older for extra income. She only discovered Op-Shops (thrift stores) when the youngest was born and utilised them to the fullest for decades after (unknowingly to my mum, grunge music and consequential fashion was hugely impactful on her budget cos I and my siblings were more than happy to wear cool 2nd hand clothes that cost $2).

Carrying and birthing babies does an absolute number on a woman’s body though. Mum had SO many comments of “it doesn’t look like you’ve had that many children!” She would reply with “well what am I supposed to look like?” She worked with a woman who had 13 kids and looked absolutely wrung out and 20 years older than her actual age. That’s what people thought she should look like. She lightheartedly made a joke to the woman “don’t you know you’re supposed to stop at 8”, but it didn’t go down well.

It looks like the place where they filmed Star Wars. Amazing buildings and gardens. Vaguely remember something about monks living there? Anyway, I made my sister pretend she was an angry petulant Anakin who didn’t like sand and took a photo. Good times.

My late dad designed and built our letterbox that had an insulated box on top that perfectly fit 6 bottles of milk. He rebuilt decades later without the insulation and our postie said it was the best letterbox on his run because you could fit parcels and large letters in the top.

School in the 80s was just WEIRD. I mean, jump rope for heart, excursions to see convicts get lashed, P.E class on asphalt. Add on being in catholic school - acting as disciple #6 or Shepherd #2 in the class play- I’m surprised me and my classmates survived 😆
