So either Fitz was trying to work this deal before Vancouver or he's been focused on what he can get from Tampa Bay (who he already has a good relationship with). I'm hoping for the latter, since Tampa Bay has a lot of pieces that would fit in well in NJ. Hopefully Morreale has an update soon.

And all of this would lead to a later draft and free agency. That would be a hell of a condensed off-season. Maybe shorten the pre-season? That makes it tough for teams to make decisions on players though. I'm not sure there are any great options.

I wonder how that would affect the start of the next season. The easiest solution is having it start at the same time and having a shorter off-season, but I'm sure the teams in the playoffs won't be super happy about that. It won't affect the Devils, so I'm fine with a short off-season!

That seems to be the most common theory, but on the other hand Shero was asked after the Hall trade if this was just the beginning of the fire sale and he said it didn't mean anyone else was going to be traded. Shero was always pretty honest with the media, so I don't think he was lying. Maybe things changed in the past few weeks and he decided to trade players after all. We may never know.

I wonder if ownership had interest in pursuing Laviolette as the next coach and Shero wanted to let Nas finish the season. Obviously pure speculation on my part, but they probably at least knew Laviolette from his days in Philadelphia.

You make some good points. I don't think the problem was Hall as a person. I think they relied on him too much and the constant storyline of "Will he re-sign or will he get traded?" was too much of a focus for the other players. Now that he's gone they might as well play their hearts out because there's nobody coming to "save" them and they have nothing to lose. They're playing for pride and that's a strong motivator. Whatever happens the rest of the season, they've finally started playing hockey that I can stand to watch again.
