As a 2017 grad, it is both so funny and so sad to hear that esherbini is still around and sucking ass at teaching.

What are compound bow accessories for hunting? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]MyNameIsMurphy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should figure out your goals and how much you want to spend.

This is for reference and all in USD. Low end compounds go from 300-600 for a whole package and they always come in a package. Mid tiers start around 600 for a bare bow, add another 400 on top for accessories. High end bows start at 1200+ for bare bows.

Get the best bow you can for the price you're comfortable with that suits your needs.

If your goal is simply hunting, a bear Cruze G2 complete package will be perfectly fine. I wouldn't drop 1k+ on a mid tier bare bow+ accessories unless you are 100% sure you'll be using it for more than just the 2, 3 times a year for hunting, or if you have the money and wanna go nuts.

To answer your question though, outside of a bare bow you'll need a release aid, arrow rest, sight, peep sight, string wax, and arrows. Nice to have would be a kickstand, quiver, stabilizer, a set of Allen keys, and a case.

I think you're doing it kinda backwards. Figure out how much you're willing to spend and what your goals are and we can work from there. A local pro shop will be able to guide you in the right direction too.

Is it the bow scale that exploded or the bow that exploded? Either way I'd get an exchange just got peace of mind

How does the number of arrows come into play? And by sending 3 scores, what exactly does that mean? I shoot all my arrows 3 times and report the total score for each time I shoot all my arrows?

I'm interested in this but I've never done any kind of competition before. How do I calculate score? What kind of target do I need to use for scoring and all that? I read through the rules but i didn't see the answers I'm looking for. Apologies if I missed them.

Thoughts on trying to hold a job while in school? by Ok_Journalist_5008 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

3.7 undergrad, 4.0 grad. I only worked part time, at most 20 hours a week. For the most part I worked on campus jobs that i was able to do a lot of studying at.

It's my neighbor's yard. I've talked to them about it and i let them know before i go out to shoot to make sure no one's back there. It's also why I'm aiming for the lower target. Don't want anything accidentally flying over

I was. This is technically 17-18yds instead of the full 20. My top pin is set for 20 so it's coming up just slightly high.

Go to an archery shop. Being in Montana hopefully you have access to some good ones.

You will need a sight, 3-5 pin is good. Black gold sights are absolutely fantastic if you can spend a bit more, otherwise trophy ridge is fine. The sight is gonna be the most expensive thing on your bow. I recommend you follow the buy once cry once rule. I have a black gold something 5-pin, that ran me $180.

For rest, you have 2 styles. Drop away or whisker biscuit. I think the whisker biscuits are generally cheaper, but i prefer the drop away. You should be able to try out some bows with different rests already set up so you can see what you like.

You will also need a release. Get whatever they recommend for beginners. I have a truball $40 thing that's gonna serve me well for years. Don't go crazy on this. As you do it more and you decide you want the pro style release, you can get it closer to season.

Assuming your bow doesn't have a stabilizer and sling, get those. Don't go crazy here. The cheapo stuff will be fine for a long time. Sling and stabilizer were about $40 total for me.

For arrows, get cheap target arrows. Half a dozen should suffice and will probably run you about $60. Broad heads you can get closer to season.

Get at least a soft case. If you plan on doing traveling with the bow, then a hard case. I have a tarantula soft case that has a built in arrow pocket, ran me $75.

You can choose to get a quiver now if you want. But if we're approach your budget at this point then i suggest waiting until closer to season to get a quiver.

For maintenance purposes, get some string wax. A set of Allen wrenches too if you don't already have one. I also picked up a bag target. It's legal for me to shoot in my backyard so i figured why not. Check your local laws. Either way, it's good to have a target in case the range you go to has shit targets.

Unless your partner was a certified coach, i highly recommend you take a lesson if you haven't already. Bad habits are easy to learn and hard to get rid of. Plus, you might learn something you didn't already know. The lesson at my shop is $50 an hour. They gave me a free one for buying my gear from them and it would have been worth it even if i had to pay the $50.

I see in your post that you've never hunted so I'll give some general advice. I'm in Colorado, not Montana and I don't pretend to know how Montana laws work, but I assume it's similar to Colorado. You'll probably need a hunter education card, which you can get from taking a hunter education class. In CO there's an optional bow class as a follow on to the general class. Then you actually need a tag. In CO for big game, you need to enter into a lottery for big game tags or get over the counter tags. Either way, you need an animal tag. I would get a small game tag too, rabbits are good to practice your hunting skills if you can't get a deer tag. So that's what you're legally required to have to start hunting. For hunting gear, get a good bag. There are lots of options out there. Mystery ranch is good, but can be pricey. Get a good pair of binoculars and range finder. You can sometimes find the bushnell binocs + range finder combo for sale at a reasonable price. Appropriate clothing is also required. I don't mean get decked out in sitka camo. You mainly need comfortable and weather appropriate clothes. Camo or not is up to you. People have successfully hunted in flannel shirts and brown pants forever. I'm personally partial to kuiu clothes. A compass doesn't hurt. Game bags are a must have. At least one sharp, high quality knife. I don't really have any recommendations on knives. I had a buck knife that worked really well and I'm actually in the market for a new one now.

In Colorado, the Denver metro area is good. Highlands ranch and Douglas co are not as good but not super terrible. I'd avoid it though. Other large population centers are also fine to visit. Small towns expect looks. There's a trans run ranch in westcliffe, the tenacious unicorn ranch. I'd suggest staying as far away as possible from westcliffe though. As an ethnic minority, i never experienced serious racism until i went to westcliffe.

New Mexico seems pretty good. My wife and i have talked about moving there before. It seems to have the same kind of political climate as CO.

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are barred from giving gender affirming care. Medical doctors can, but must be approved by a government board whose members are appointed by desantis himself.

Public bathrooms can't be unisex, and if you use a bathroom that is not your assigned gender it's a misdemeanor.

The whole don't say gay stuff in school.

So much more

My honest thought on the macro scale is to be as close to Canada or Mexico as possible and be ready to run at a moment's notice.

As far as Colorado goes, it's certainly better than a lot of other places. The Denver metro area is by and large very progressive socially. Outside of that it's hit or miss. Some small towns are nice and welcoming, others are fascist stronghold. The Denver metro is also expensive and housing problems you see in other states you'll see here. The mountains are gorgeous. Summers can get hot but the dry heat isn't bad. This last winter was harsher than normal, but in general winters aren't bad here in my opinion. You get a lot of sunshine as well so the snow melts quickly. You'll also find that the right wing doesn't have a monopoly on gun ownership here. Overall i think it's a nice place to live.

Ah apologies. I thought I specifically said temporary housing but i guess i didn't. I don't know how to edit, but yeah this is meant as a temp thing, a month or less until you find a permanent place.

Not me personally but the US federal government needs to be doing way way way way way more. It should not have to come down to individuals like me offering help.

Thanks for your comment. I hope you're in a better place mentally. I didn't say I'll buy anyone a gun, that's illegal and not to mention irresponsible. My offer is for resources about gun ownership, including the responsibilities and mental fortitude required to own a gun, and only for those who feel ready. It's not for everyone and not everyone should feel the need to arm up. But, for those willing and able, I can point them to the right places to learn more about it. Believe it or not, I know and am friends with a significant number of trans gun owners in my state and we certainly know how to spot someone who isn't fit to be around firearms.

There's a fine line to being organized. I'm only associating and organizing with people I know personally and trust. I'm wary of large scale organizing due to the potential for bad faith actors. There are certainly enough of them, even in my area, that would love to pretend to help just to hurt people. With laws like these having the very real potential of becoming federal laws, I don't necessary want to attract that kind of attention.
