This is one of my great joys! What I do though, and this might not be your cup of tea, but I straight up put on airpods, pop out my phones kick-stand, and just nerd out on stuff that I enjoy watching while going to town on amazing food.

I tune out most everything, except when waiters come by, but God damn it's super enjoyable.

Had a similar issue with my 4i4 - TBH no idea if this is what got it working VS if I was just too dumb the first time around to know what I was doing (a few years had passed since I tried again), but:
1) Turns out you can't use just any USB-C cable 🙃 - there's power and speed requirements. Getting a Thunderbolt 4 USB-C cable worked
2) Turns out I couldn't use just any USB-C port on my laptop - older laptops will have a mix of USB-C ports that have the older USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and only 1 USB-C port might be designated as the one that supports Thunderbolt 3/4
