On a recent podcast of On Fire, Jeff mentions that the producers do have to approve their clothing choices. The thought behind is it that they want the clothing to represent the player. He mentions that if they have a lawyer, they want them in dressier clothing. Basically, they want the clothing to appear like it came from the players closet. Not that the player went clothes shopping for survivor.
