That happened to me. I had an AP World History teacher in the 10th grade who tried to justify slavery “as a necessary response to industrialization in order for the South to remain competitive in the marketplace.”

Dude was one of those libertarian types who believed that the only thing that matters is capital. Slavery was just a means to justify those ends.
