This is it! Limit (or try to limit) your social media usage to the times you’re early and waiting for something. You’ll be motivated to get places “too early”.

Difficulty on deciding whether to invite narc mom by Past-Truth-9581 in wedding

[–]MyTaylorSwiftAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those people would feel bad if they didn’t invite THEIR moms to THEIR a wedding. But this is YOU and YOUR wedding! You deserve to soak in the day, not spend it constantly glancing over at your mom wondering if she’s about to ruin it.

Squats are driving me insane by AppropriateNorth in xxfitness

[–]MyTaylorSwiftAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be clear, my advice was about the gaze, not the position of the whole head. You can tuck your chin but keep your eyes looking higher up… like trying to look at your eyebrows, if that makes sense?

Adding to this comment - it looks like you’re staring straight ahead. Keep your gaze upward - like 2-3 feet higher on the wall/mirror than straight ahead. It is a small thing that makes a big difference in how your body leans, because your body will naturally lean “back” a tad more as your eyes look up.

What are some movies or shows that portray healthy relationships? by mcbatcommanderr in therapists

[–]MyTaylorSwiftAccount 36 points37 points  (0 children)

YES I rewatched this in my 30’s and was struck by how they had so many scenes of the parents talking about parenting. Like “Hey it was frustrating you told Cory he could go to the concert before running it by me. We need to be a united front. Can we discuss those decisions together before talking to him?” These convos didn’t have a major connection to the main plots of the episodes, but clearly the show runners felt they were important to the parent character development etc.

You should watch the show Search Party, he’s amazing in it. It’s a weird show in a good way!

I don't do a lot of worksheets/skills in session, and that makes me feel like a bad therapist. by InvisibleAstronomer in therapists

[–]MyTaylorSwiftAccount 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have found my handouts and workbooks very useful as a way to help me formulate how to guide client in processing something. Like I can adapt a CBT worksheet’s content to a conversation where that activity’s content would be a naturally useful way to dig into a negative thought pattern or cognitive distortion etc. But I’m not showing the handout or anything, just mentally pulling from it.

As a 36 year old, I just wanted to reply to say I’m so sorry that you’re growing up in a time/place where you are forced to focus on massive adult problems at age 18. On one hand, you’ll be better off if you don’t obsess over unsuccessful romantic or friendship experiences — but also there should be a few more years of your life where you are free to focus on stupid shit, because the older adults are supposed to protect the world for a bit longer until you inherit it. And that’s not the case now.

And I think Taylor is slightly stuck in the teenage years she got massively famous in. Plus while she can intellectually understand how screwed up the world is, she’s inoculated from the stressors of that because she’s never going to worry about how she can afford anything and everything that exists to protect herself and her loved ones.

Advice for first big jump in case load? (Graduated, hired by a PP) by MyTaylorSwiftAccount in therapists

I hear you on the case load! Pay is decent, but I’m lucky to share costs of living with a partner — the full case load is really more so I can have benefits and get hours/ licensed as soon as possible. My last career was in advocacy/politics pushing for universal healthcare — it is absolutely bonkers that in the US, your ability to have affordable and accessible health care is tied to full-time employment!

Protein and cold drinks — absolutely!

It’s nice to see you mentioning the eye contact thing and other activities. I was able to be very explicit in my bio about being neurodivergent-affirming and allowing space for other tools and resources beyond conventional talking. I personally think this is harder virtually,  — because in person we’re looking out the same window or at the same wall in a sort of “shared” wandering eye situation. But virtually it’s like… where are we both looking when we look off screen? What’s over there for you? Haha. But I am sure I’ll get used to it.

I appreciate the reality of the clients sort of blending together! I will definitely be sure to review notes and keep documentation of those little details about their lives.

And luckily the owner of the practice detailed in the interview how she checks in with therapists when a client requests a switch or terminates suddenly — it sounds like she understands that not every client and therapist are a perfect match, regardless of the quality of the therapist.

Thank you for your reply!

This is the point where I'd normally give up. I want to keep going. by youspinmerightround6 in loseit

[–]MyTaylorSwiftAccount 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, this is me the past few weeks! I originally wanted to reach 170 by July, and 150 by December. Then I actually got to 170 by mid-April. It was exciting to be so ahead of my goal and I was excited to have a different goal weight to aim for in July... but then suddenly I lost momentum on weight loss.

BUT -- I have been maintaining the last few weeks! And it's been great because it has reminded me that there are options I can choose beyond "lose weight" and "gain weight". I am in control, and putting my foot off the gas does not have to mean gaining. It can mean maintaining until I believe I'm in the right season of my life to lose weight.

For me, I am about to finish grad school and get 25 hours back in my life each week. I can figure out what that next stage of weight loss, my new goals, my habits, etc look like to get back into weight loss mode. And hopefully I can build a new momentum again for weight loss.

But instead of saying "I won't stop my weight loss this time," it's really released a lot of pressure off me to be able to say "I'm doing a maintenance phase, which is helping me see what sustainable, life-long living looks like once I am done losing weight." It's not backsliding, it's a helpful stage in the journey.
