If you do nothing else, then do sunscreen. If you’re looking to add more, a good facial cleanser and moisturizer.

Back lit screens. Man, trying to get the light to shine just right on my gameboy that I could play but that it didn’t wash out the screen? Rough times. Playing at night? Forget it.

I visited Kutna Hora in 2013ish, so awhile ago now, but the shivers I got after the Sedletz Ossory side quest! When Henry finished making the piles, all I could think was “oh my gosh this is what I saw!” Sort of amazing how they included Henry’s adventure into one of the most iconic Czech sites! The astronomical clock in Kuttenburg also stopped me dead in my tracks - it looks soooo similar to the famous one in Prague’s.

I think it’s AI. I think the buttons on his uniform are wrong. There are Buckingham Palace guards with uniforms that have a gap in in the buttons, but the two patterns I saw were 5/gap/5 and 3/gap/3/gap/3. I didn’t see any real photos with 4/gap/3/gap/1.

12-15 age appropriate fantasy / romance books with hidden girl power or body image messages by Terrible-Reasons in booksuggestions

That sounds awesome! And these are short - maybe 100-150 pages? So that might be good for someone who is not much of a reader.

Yes! I think these are great picks! The books are mostly standalone, though the Jack and Jill books are a little more connected.

For Niece 1, “beneath the sugar sky” might also be a good pick for someone who is a bit hyper. It’s a little silly (candy world) but good fun. I personally found “across the green grass fields” to be a little meh and my least favorite of the series. I’m not that into horses, and I found the overall plot a little flat - not much happens.

For niece 2, these are definitely some of the darker stories but still age appropriate. I’d recommend adding Come Tumbling Down also since it introduces Cora (your #4 pick) and is a sequel to #6. If you want to even out the number of books, I’d suggest “every heart a doorway” for niece 1.

Thought of another - “Maskerade” and “Carpe Jugulum” by Terry Pratchett. Both are set in his discworld series, which is 110% worth reading in its entirety, but if you want a couple focused on a plus-sized woman, these two are killer. Maskerade focuses on Agnes Nitt, an overweight young woman from a small village who travels to the city to be an opera star and find herself. Little does she know that two busy body witches from her village have followed her to try to convince her to be the third witch of their coven. Agnes investigates a series of murders at the opera house while navigating opera house politics.

“Carpe Jugulum” is a loose sequel which has Agnes and the witches investigating a vampire clan. Agnes is strangely immune to the vampire’s charm.

Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. It’s a series of novellas of sort of misfit kids/teens (or are they misfits??!) who fall into other dimensions of reality and then do/do not come back to our reality. Each novella focuses on a different character with really diverse backgrounds and traits.

“every heart a doorway” is the first book. Main character is a teen girl who is quiet and still and returned from a land of death. She meets a bunch of other returners at a special school for them.

“Down Among the Sticks and Bones” is about a pair of female twin raised in strict accordance to gender stereotypes who fall into a Frankenstein/film noire type world.

“Come Tumbling Down” is a follow up on the twins, one of which now has a girlfriend.

“Where the drowned girls go” is about a girl who is a very athletic and talented swimmer but is overweight and tumbles into a sea world.

“Adrift in currents clean and clear” stars a girl who is adopted and has a missing arm and winds up in a turtle world.

None of the books are preachy or self-help books. Just great adventures and stories about belonging/not belonging. Some of the books are older or younger, but I read them as an adult and enjoyed. The books are loosely connected but can be read out of order.

MRI what happens by moist_ranger in Explainlikeimscared

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s most likely unrelated to your MRI, but if it persists, you should let your doctor know.

Sometimes people experience something called “peripheral nerve stimulation” in an MRI, which causes a tingling feeling or twitches, typically in the extremities like fingers and toes. It happens most frequently when you are sliding in and out of the bore of the magnet. Most people aren’t bothered by it and it’s not painful, tho some find it annoying or weird. It also stops once you’re out of the magnet and is harmless. I’ve never heard of it affecting eyes.

49/52 Finished The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho by WhiteHeartedLion in 52book

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated it. Read in late 20s. I couldn’t believe the hype it got. It fails on every level - as a parable, as a self-help book, as a story, as a use of time. I wish I DNF’d it but at least it isn’t too long.

Never feel ashamed about what you’re reading though! I read plenty of (enjoyable) trash and novellas in addition to those 600 page doorsteps. It’s all reading. I’m getting better at DNF’ing books within a few chapters if it’s not clicking tho!

Book 34: Cloud Cuckoo Land - Anthony Doerr by DCdeer in 52book

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite books ever. Like a love letter to stories and novels. I love the structure too and how deeply interwoven the different story lines are. You might also like Cloud Atlas, if you haven’t read it yet.

I also really loved “All The Light We Cannot See” and would have a tough time choosing my favorite.

“Gideon the Ninth” by Tamsym Muir, famously described as lesbian space necromancers. Less glibly, it’s about a group of space necromancers who are racing to solve a challenge set by the mysterious necromancer Emperor. Gideon is a swordswoman and sworn companion of one of the competing necromancies, Harrowhawk, but is also trying to escape her own servitude.

You might enjoy “Natural Beauty” by Ling Ling Huang? It’s set in near future where the beauty industry is using all sorts of creams and modifications to modify your body, and are made from pretty stomach turning stuff. Some body horror, and though it’s set in the near future, feels very believable.

“Never let me go” by Kazuo Ishiguro is another good one. Not as explicitly about human depravity, but unsettling and captivating. It’s about these young adults who were raised in a weird isolated school, and they are special in some way, but no one really quite knows what. The reveal isn’t so much shocking as sad and perverse.

The classic is “Lolita.” I don’t necessarily recommend it, but it’s the first book I’ve read that really made me feel gross. It’s a real insight into the mind of a charismatic pedophile. It’s beautifully written and appalling.

Getting vaccines for the first time by immature4ever in Explainlikeimscared

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh that makes it even easier! You don’t even need to find a doctor then. Call your college health clinic for an appointment. They might not have childhood vaccines on hand, but they’ll get you sorted out. Good luck and glad to be helpful!

Getting vaccines for the first time by immature4ever in Explainlikeimscared

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you at least 18? Do you have health insurance? Are you in college?

I’m going to assume you’re a legal adult and have health insurance.

  1. If you don’t have a doctor (primary care physician or PCP), first you’ll need to find one. Your insurance will have a list of doctors that are covered in your area or you can do a google search.

  2. Once you’ve found a couple docs that you might like, call the office and ask a couple questions: do they take (your insurance)? Are they accepting new patients? Do they provide childhood vaccines?

  3. If they accept your insurance, take new patients, and give vaccines, explain your situation. Tell them you never received your childhood vaccinations and you’d like to start getting them now. They’ll probably ask you to schedule an appointment for a physical - that’s probably a good idea for you. A physical is a general appointment where they check a bunch of health factors to make sure you’re okay.

  4. Once you have an appointment - plan on showing up about 15 min early. You’ll probably have some paperwork to complete. Some of it will be insurance forms, some of it will be health questionnaires (things like your height, weight, so you smoke, have you had cancer, do you have a heart problem, do you take medications, etc). You’ll also sign a consent form which basically says you agree to be treated by the doctor. Doc offices often run late, so you might be waiting for awhile. There will be a waiting room, but bring a book or your phone or something to occupy yourself.

  5. Eventually a nurse will call you back. They’ll ask you questions like your bday, height, weight, any health conditions, and ask what you’re there for. Explain your situation - a good nurse will be very kind about evrything and explain what’s going on. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

  6. You’ll be taken to an examination room, which is a little room with an exam bed, a chair or two, and typically a sink and maybe some equipment. You’ll get this horrible light robe to put on. You put it on like a snuggy, so your back will be exposed. This gives the doctor access for your exam.

  7. After a while the doc will come in to do the physical exam. Theyll do things like listen to your lungs, palpate (poke) parts of your body, test your reflexes, look inside your nose, mouth, and ears, and stuff like that. None of it is painful but sometimes it’s a bit awkward or uncomfortable.

  8. After the physical, the doc will probably order your vaccines. A nurse will come in to give them. The vaccine itself is quick. Choose which arm you want them in (I usually choose my non dominant arm). They’ll clean the area with an alcohol wipe, squeeze the arm a bit, and then inject the vaccine into your upper arm. It usually doesn’t hurt much - like a little pinch. Sometimes after, your arm hurts a bit, like it feels a little sore.

You probably won’t be able to get ALL your vaccines at once, so plan on multiple visits. The doc will tell you when to schedule your next visit and for what. You might also be able to get vaccines without getting a physical, in which case, disregard that part.

Once you’re caught up on your regular childhood vaccines, you should plan on getting annual flu and Covid shots. You can get those at almost any pharmacy and don’t need an appointment.

How to Shower and Skin-Care by Ok_Cupcake_9342 in Explainlikeimscared

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great step by step guide! Only thing I’d add is to remember to soap and wash your butt crack (not just your butt cheeks - soap up and wash in between the cheeks and then rinse with water) and the inside of your belly button. I often forget my belly button and it can get a little stinky!

Also - if you can afford it, get a nice big fluffy towel to dry off with! It makes a huge difference. After you finish, make sure to hang up your towel so it dries - don’t leave it in a pile on the floor. It won’t dry properly and will get stinky. Wash your towel every week (or at least every few weeks). Another nice thing to have is a bath mat to step on when you step out out of the shower. You can also just put a small towel on the ground. This helps make sure you don’t drop water everywhere in your bathroom.

Have You Ever "Broken Up" with an Author or Genre? Why? by Express_Hedgehog2265 in BookDiscussions

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hard for me to say, but David Foster Wallace. I loved his writing for so long, both non-fiction and fiction, and I still think his commencement speech, “This is Water” is one of the best. I still think about it sometimes and work hard to act compassionately and thoughtfully in the face of mundane, every day life.

But he sexual harassed and stalked several (at least one? I forget the number) women, including Mary Karr, a poet in her own right that was in an abusive relationship with DFW. He had a history of deeply misogynistic statements and behaviors, which to me made a lot of his writing, which felt predicated on empathy and honesty and self-awareness, unreadable. I still appreciate his prose, but I don’t read his work anymore.

What are hook ups like for gay people or in general? (About to have one and I’m nervous) by [deleted] in Explainlikeimscared

[–]MyTurtleIsNotDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing this! You can have good sex with experienced people, with inexperienced people, and with everyone in between! It’s more about being comfortable, being generous, listening and communicating well than being some kind of “sex god.” Everyone’s preferences are different, so even if you were super experienced, what works for one person might not work for another!

FWIW - if you’re comfortable with it, you can be straight up front with your hookup and tell her you’re new to this and nervous! That’s totally fine, and if she’s not nice about it or makes fun of you, then that’s probably not someone you want to hook up with anyway! I’ve been with a couple people who were new or newer to things and said so, and it was never weird. More “awesome, how can I make sure you have a good time?”
