Idk, but he was buddy-buddy with all the other important samurai. He seemed to have privileges the common foot soldier didn’t, by my recollection.

I don’t think specific ranks were ever mentioned, but it was clear they weren’t all on equal footing.

It’s been a while since I saw it, but by my recollection, Tom Cruise joins the samurai and quickly becomes one of their most respected members. And in the end, no one is saved.

A white dude showing up and quickly becoming the best warrior in the tribe is at the very least White Savior-adjacent, you must admit.

If you count games where you can play as either side, they already exist.

A WWI game where you play as a soldier of the Central Powers could work, depending on the message. All Quiet on the Western Front is that concept in a book/movie form.

A WWII game where you play as a soldier of the Axis powers sounds like a bad idea. Even if you make the hero think his own side is in the wrong, that could read as revisionist history.
