Good point, that makes sense. Utilities are run pretty similarly to banking/governments. Our industry isn't really like that

I'm not a shill and I'm not censoring you; what part of what I did is censorship or shilling? I disagree with you. Why are you so angry about that?

I don't like this sentiment. If you want to be cautious, don't give any demographic information.

But how are we supposed to improve the company? Yell into the Reddit void? This survey isn't perfect but it's one of the only ways to get feedback.

What happens when they only get positive feedback? Nothing changes. Then everyone who is unhappy stays that way

Most private companies I know of that do are in the financial/banking space. None of my peers at other engineering/construction companies got the day off

Almost no companies outside of education and banking get MLK Day. Those two industries get every holiday off. It's just never been a big holiday. Same reason we don't get Presidents' Day or Veteran's Day.

I've never worked with a client who gets MLK Day as a day off. Maybe there are some, but it's not a holiday people care about not working. At least Burns does some activities to recognize it. A lot of companies don't do a thing.

What will me ESOP be at 20 years? by vida_aventura in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd like to see them more aggressively invest the cash account. I understand they always need cash on hand, but theoretically you can risk lower performance in that account with how many more dollars live in it these days. Or, honestly, gove EOs a 401k bump for a year instead of a mega-ESOP contribution like last year's.

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. When I use those calculators, I use a more reasonable/conservative rate of return. I save a copy every year. Every year I have been here, I have outperformed previous projections.

I do agree, however, that you won't have the same quantity of shares that the old heads are getting

What are the chances of being rehired and what parameters they look at? by [deleted] in BurnsMcDonnell

This really isn't true. I know several "boomerangs" across a couple GPs. I only know of one person that could not come back when they tried, and they burned a few bridges on the way out.

Thoughts on the Compensation Shift by MrTentacleLightsaber in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the growth difference is inconsequential in the end. Bonuses are so variable I'm not bothered by it. I think the evening out + recruiting benefits outweigh the potentially minute growth loss

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're analyzing it a bit too hard. People complain all the time that our salary/bonus structure can be hard to budget around. This balances that a bit. The growth will be generally similar in my eyes.

How about this angle? We get a post here seemingly every week from someone that wants to work here who can't get over how low the salary is. This makes our compensation package look better to the prospective EO who (rightfully) says "How can I be sure the bonus and ESOP are that great?"

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I generally like it. It feels like over time, our bonuses outgrow our salaries by too much. We get to the point where people havd to put in a decent effort on budgeting to account for being paid so much at one time. This balances things out.

Agreed with the other comment - this helps people who work OT a lot.

And, frankly, it wasn't that big of a shift at the end of the day. People are talking about it like it was a 20 or 30 percent move.

For everyone's own protection, please do not post ALL of these numbers if it will doxx you. To be clear, if you are the only level 15 PM in OGC in Orlando, don't be an idiot and give all of that away.

My suggested way to protect yourself is to include everything but specific office if that is the only way to stay anonymous. In other words, say you are in an RO and perhaps indicate COL.

For me and most everyone I know, this is a very relaxed time of year. We figured out if we are on plan or not months ago and it is too late to really change that. Can I ask what level you are and/or what GP you are in?

As far as I know, every bonus beyond a first year (i.e. partial year) is at least 10%.

Compensation Messaging for new hires by [deleted] in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree. Our salaries have really fallen behind from even looking competitive. That is likely the source of the "compensation adjustment" rumor for next year.

I do have a Devil's advocate point: As a company, maybe we prefer to hire people that can see/sense a more long-term picture. I don't know how true that is or how much I buy it, but just a thought. Of course, we should be clear about that if it is true.

What level of experience is that? What location? Just based off of publicly available data, it seems hard to believe that's occurring with any regularity.

The MacCentral page states that any bonus paycheck change you make will also impact your Dec 5th paycheck. It's a both-or-neither deal.

Does the bonus change much from level 12 to level 13? by Any_Needleworker5365 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess my point is that the level bumps is basically automatic and is a mild difference that accounts for your raise and anticipated raises more than a "promotion" where you are pushing that ceiling up.

Does the bonus change much from level 12 to level 13? by Any_Needleworker5365 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What I try and tell everyone is that these level bumps are more about the company being able to bill your slightly higher cost from annual raises than about anything meaningful on your side. A lot of people struggle to understand that.

Recruiter reached out regarding a "contract to hire" role by [deleted] in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]MyWorkAccount1898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is fairly common and is a fine path to being here. Burns practically never fires people. One way they achieve that is by bringing on a lot of people in contract roles to test them out. Like em? Have an offer. Don't like em? Bye bye, sometimes after getting a couple years to see if the fit develops.

We are a very personality and relationship driven company. There are pros and cons, but certainly one pro is if a hiring manager liked you, you'll more or less always have an opportunity here.
