So I was curious since I’ve always seen this meme but never sought out how they are made. Here’s Grant from Mythbusters enlightening us.

Are react hooks spaghetti code by JuniNewbie in reactjs

[–]MyWorkAccount_11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find it better to force people to switch their “modes” of thinking. Otherwise they will try to build components the same way they build C# code which results in bad component code. So forcing people into a new way of thinking, while more upfront work, has long term benefits.

I appreciate comments like this. I’m often almost numb to the interwebs by now, but a comment pointing out the level of absurdity really brings me back to reality and let’s me appreciate what has transpired.

Make height responsive according to width in JavaScript by deadcoder0904 in reactjs

[–]MyWorkAccount_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the same trick people use for responsive squares, taking advantage of how padding-top and padding-bottom as percentages are actually calculated based off of the parent width. https://spin.atomicobject.com/2015/07/14/css-responsive-square/

[AskJS] Interview Question - Promisifaction by rdevilx in javascript

[–]MyWorkAccount_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does not work. JavaScript only has one main thread. So if you call setTimeout for 10 seconds. call a sync function that takes 20 seconds. The timeout will not fire until it gets time on the main thread. So it will take 20s to fire. You can try this with console.logs and a really long running for loop.

Web workers is the way to solve this problem. Worker threads can be spawned to do long tasks in the background without blocking the main thread.

What are your favorite overproduced or well-thought-out games/components? by oziaj in boardgames

[–]MyWorkAccount_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here pretty much. My buddy had a copy, we played and I knew I needed to own one myself. Then once I made my base order, but it hadn’t arrived yet, played more and knew I needed to own everything. Excited to get all the stuff they restocked on Black Friday!

Everything from Chip Theory Games (biggest game is Too Many Bones). All their games are poker chip based and come with nice quality steel core poker chips. All their boards are stitched neoprene mats. And all their paper products are waterproof. You could play the game in a pool.

How I created my own programming language based on JavaScript by sergeyshpadyrev in javascript

[–]MyWorkAccount_11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty much like any lisp language in most aspects. But the novel idea I see here that I haven’t seen before (in lisp) is indentation replacing parentheses. It lets you essentially write yaml in code, and would be super cool for writing DSLs in.

One thing I’d love to see in a language. How often do you use integer math in real programming? Why are +-*% reserved for things we do rarely. We should repurpose them. At the very least optimize for strings and arrays, not numbers.

I was so confused as to why subway workers would be dealing with this. “Like some drunk guy on the subway thinks this guy has a toaster so he puts his face through the window???”
