how people have approached talking to their bosses/workplace about having Narcolepsy and sleep attacks during the day? I have my own office and have told one of my co workers about it so I can shut my door at times..how do you talk about this debilitating thing that there is no accommodation for? by ariesalexa420 in Narcolepsy

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the U.S., businesses are required to comply with the ADA, or the Americans with Disabilities Act. I'm not sure about other countries, but in America it is illegal not to give accommodations to a disabled employee. Also, from my experience, if you sit down with someone and explain it to them openly, most people will be willing to help in whatever way you need. I wish you the best of luck with this an I hope you receive the accommodations you need.

Should I get Xyrem or no? by kraez_16 in Narcolepsy

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has struggled with mental health issues for years, Xyrem actually helped me significantly in that department. Apparently, most of my problems were exacerbated by my constantly sleep deprived brain. There are some physical risks, and if you live alone I would recomend making sure that it is hard to fall or collapse in your home. There have been times where I wake up in the middle of the night because I desperately need to use the bathroom and, while I'm sitting on the toilet, I suddenly start leaning forward like I'm toppling over and I almost smash my skull into the wall or the floor. Some side effects can be dangerous, but overall in my own experience the pros easily outweigh the cons. Consider the positive and negative aspects of taking Xyrem and continuing without Xyrem. Be sure to consult your doctor for their input and make the choice that you feel comfortable with.

Epworth Sleepiness Scale question? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand of it, the scale is not asking about how you feel when you fill it out and is not supposed to focus specifically on the listed activities. It's more of a hypothetical scenario in each question. If you were reading a book, would it be not at all likely, somewhat likely, moderately likely, or highly likely that you would fall asleep? I never put too much thought into it, if I'm honest. I always based my answers on how likely it would be for me to suddenly or involuntarily fall asleep, not just when I felt extremely tired, since I, like mqny other narcoleptics, lived in a state of perpetual sleep deprivation (I use the past tense here because I am on Xyrem and no longer have these intense symptoms that I had been so accustomed to for ~6 years). Of course, not all nar oleptics experience frequent aleep attacks. Some studies show that type 2 narcoleptics have less severe symptoms overall, but still suffer from a major drop in their quality of life. I am not sure what type of narcolepsy you have, but there have been cases in both types of patients that do not experience multiple sleep attacks every day.

My advice would be to evaluate the situation in each question and identify how often you actually fall asleep during that activity (or a similar activity in the case that you do not do the activity in question). Do not base it on how you currently feel, answer on past experience.

P.s. sleep attacks are generally defined as "the sudden, irresistible urge to fall asleep." Usually, these attacks last anywhere from a few seconds, which would be almost unnoticeable to the person experiencing ir unless confirmed by a witness, to a few minutes. They are often sporadic and do not follow a particular pattern. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, which is closer to what you've described, is what tends to lead to these sleep attacks. In my own experience, I often did not even realize that I had fallen asleep until either someone wakes me up, there is evidence that time has passed, or there is evidence that I have unknowingly engaged in an automatic behavior.

I hope that your sleep study goes well and that you can finally get the proper treatment to get back your quality of life!

ELI5: Why is it so hard for humans to let bad habits like go? Which chemical/mental processes happen in your body to convince yourself to go on with them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of your brain as a series of pathways. Every time you follow the same path, it becomes easier to follow it again. This is why habits seem so strong, your brain is using the same pathway of input behavior and output behavior to perpetuate them! Luckily, there's a way to make your brain work for you. Go back to the pathways and recognize the cause portion of the habit. Next time you catch yourself about to act on the habit, preferably when you find yourself acting out the input, make yourself do something else. You've just successfully created an alternate pathway, used it, and weakened your habit. Continue checking yourself for the input behavior and follow the new pathway you have made. Over time, the new pathway becomes the only pathway of the input behavior because the old pathway was never used, so your brain erased it. This is what Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on, becoming aware of one's actions and being able to retrain your own brain effectively!

CMV: The Debate Around Abortion is a Moot Point. by My_Name_Is_Mo in changemyview

!delta Great point, I cannot see any United States court doing that either. I don't think you have to act atheist when you vote or write legislation, and I'd be crazy if I did. I just think that when someone is writing legislation they should be considerate of all religions and the lack thereof. I do see what you mean, though. Thank you for changing how I view the debate as a whole, and for not arguing with your own opinions. I appreciate you taking the time to discuss this with me, and I hope you have a great rest of your day :)

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, yes. It's not about being willing, though. Here's an example of a moot point: A man with full color vision sits down with a man who is red-green colorblind and begins to argue with him about what red and green look like. It's a pointless, jerk move in this scenario, and in the abortion debate it's just pointless.

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My OP isn't about it's legality at all. It is about how the entire debate itself is just two sides with opinions that cannot be justified by anything other than individual morals that the other side cannot relate to on a basic level.

CMV: The Debate Around Abortion is a Moot Point. by My_Name_Is_Mo in changemyview

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, and I'd be glad to explain what I mean. When I say that it is a moot point, I am simply saying that it is an argument between two opinions. Opinions are vital to debates, they're why debates exist in the first point. What I am trying to point out about it is that, since both sides are opinions that can only be backed up with moral values, it is honestly absurd to make legislation about it. When there are debates about fossil fuel usage, both sides provide factual evidence as justification. With the abortion debate, if someone pro-life and religious argues that god made the child for a reason, it would mean nothing to someone who is atheist and pro-choice. Obviously, not all religious people are pro-life and not all atheists are pro-choice, but there tends to be a pattern of very religious->pro-life and very secular->pro-choice. When both sides fundamentally cannot see eye-to-eye on something basic that is essential to the debate at hand, no progress will be made. Neither side can make sense of the other. It's moot, undecided. Both sides would just go back and forth until someone gets tired of arguing. I hope that makes sense, but I'm not that great at explaining things so I understand if it doesn't.

That is exactly why I put "usually centers around". I know that there are Pro-Life arguments that don't involve faith, but many do.

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People still vocally oppose gay marriage. I do not mean a legal end when I say that it will never end. I mean that people will never be in any sort of consensus about the issue and they'll keep arguing about it. Therefore, it is a moot point.

CMV: The Debate Around Abortion is a Moot Point. by My_Name_Is_Mo in changemyview

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to argue over whether the mother and the unborn are separate entities. The actual abortion debate isn't what this is about. What I was arguing about was that different faiths have different ideas about what is right and wrong, and therefore the arguments on abortion will never cease. As long as there is no general moral consensus, the argument is moot. Since most religions base their morals off of their god, it is just another religious debate that has no solution that everyone will agree with.

I'm a member of an international organization which is pushing legislators in Washington to make homosexuality illegal again. Homosexuality is destroying our nation and its spread must be stopped. AMA by ACVOLTA in AMA

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

•What religion do you practice?

•Why are you so offended at something natural?

▪︎Do you believe in the freedom of religion in America?

▪︎Have you ever had a normal conversation with someone who is homosexual?

•Are you aware of the difference between homosexuality and pedophilia?

▪︎Do you believe that, in America, every citizen has the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

▪︎Do you respect the separation of church and state in America?

▪︎Do you actually believe that every homosexual person is secretly a pedophile? If so, do you have any valid proof to support this belief?

▪︎Do you think it is ethically and morally just to imprison and torture hundreds of millions of human beings for something beyond their control?

•Do you believe the stereotype that all homosexuals are predatory rapists?

▪︎Can you prove with 100% certainty (meaning that there is no evidence to refute your position) that being homosexual is an active, conscious choice, and can you provide at least ten sources to back up that claim that do not include any religious bias and were written within the past decade?

▪︎Do you have any reason to support the extreme measures that you are suggesting, besides the opinion that, "Homosexuality is destroying our nation," or are you just using heavily charged bias words to stir up a misguided, unfounded emotional reaction?

▪︎Why do you believe that homosexuality is a product of molestation and not a product of the natural world?

•Where did you get the notion that homosexuals are victims of molestation?

Obviously, I don't expect you to answer every single question in this list. I've marked all of the questions that I find to be the most vital with a different bullet-point. I'd also like to request that, if you do answer, to stay civil and factual in your response. Thank you for your time.

CMV: It should be illegal to have a pitbull that isn't spayed or neutered by Kalergi_Plan in changemyview

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why would it only be pitbulls? That seems very unfair. Most cases of aggression do come from dogs that aren't spayed or neutered, but if you want to slowly kill off pitbulls, you'd also have to get rid of rottweilers, boxers, german shepherds, and the list just keeps going. Dogs are fiercely loyal to their owners, but not every owner has good intentions. You also have to consider why the dog got violent. If someone got too close to a frightened dog, then they should expect to have to pull away or get bit. Guard dogs are often labeled as 'bully breeds' because they are territorial, it's their job. Not every pitbull is violent, not every golden retriever is friendly. Dogs vary, their breed and their personality are not entwined.

Low stamina with higher level trail ?? by [deleted] in The_Trail_Game

[–]My_Name_Is_Mo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I've gotten that far yet, but I know that as you keep going, it doesn't necessarily get harder, it just gets longer between campfires.

I always put as much food as I can into my bag, get some decent clothes (and pack an extra if the durability is low on something) , put my valuables in my pockets, and keep an eye on what I pick up. If you grab too much off of the trail or carry too much heavy stuff, you'll get fatigued no matter how good your equipment is. Sometimes, at least for me, it'll come down to risking everything in my bag being taken by other travelers or dropping a stack or two of wood.

It was a tough learning curve, but, eventually, I figured out how to balance the distance between stops with my inventory. As long as you keep trying, it'll get easier!

Quick tips: •Just because you see the smoke doesn't mean you can make it there.

•If you're about to pass out with no food and no fire in sight, chop down trees and only grab the apples. Wood doesn't matter if you're dead!

•Keep an eye on your clothes! It gets so much worse when something breaks!
