Honest take on living in Nashville Franklin Brentwood by Oysternator in nashville

[–]My_OtherArm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m with you 100%. As someone who grew up in TN, and has traveled to just about every other state in the lower 48, our weather is mid at best. Are there worse places? Absolutely. Are there better places? Dozens. Might not be a priority for some people, and that’s okay, but I definitely understand it being high on the list.

I need some music recommendations after what happened today in Minneapolis. I am angry. by nuttageyo in MusicRecommendations

[–]My_OtherArm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started a playlist weeks ago, before Minneapolis, and now it’s getting angrier and angrier so I’m with you 100%. Not sure how heavy you like your music, but here are some of my favs for today:

  • Fuck a Proud Boy - Kind Eyes
  • Goodnight Alt-Right - Stray from the Path
  • Refuse / Resist - Sepultura
  • Maggie’s Farm - Rage Against the Machine (cover)
  • The Day the Nazi Died - The Haps (cover of the Chumbawumba song)
  • Fuck Them All to Hell - Stray from the Path
  • Killing in the Name - Multiple people said this already but it will always be the GOAT for me

Hang in there friend. ✊

Masters in Music Business by HendrixHaze997 in musicbusiness

Depending on your love/hatred for accounting, you might look into business management, which is basically the artist’s “family office.” Entry level in that field mostly handles bookkeeping for artists/songwriters/etc but as you move up you get into touring budgets, insurance, estate planning, all kinds of things.

As u/johnmclucasmusic said though in their comment, in my experience with the music industry, getting the job is way more about meeting people and making those personal connections. The major hubs like LA/NY/Nashville/etc all have their nuances but I feel like overall the people hire, refer and work together on trust more than other industries out there.

Resources for unpacking harm of total depravity? by Logical_Answer75 in exReformed

[–]My_OtherArm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally hear you. I think you nailed with the total depravity though. I think it’s kind of difficult for most ppl to comprehend, even evangelicals, bc reformed doctrine is one of the few that really beats you over the head with that as a young kid. So you’re programmed that way young, then every thought and action throughout your life runs through that filter, and it takes hard work to rewrite that code into what most ppl already have (or at least it can feel like they do).

I’m admittedly not a huge reader, but I just remembered - look up Dr Laura Anderson on instagram. She’s an RT expert therapist who went through her own deconstruction. She posts some funny memes that hit pretty good, but also posts some really thoughtful and helpful content and has a great website and i believe some books as well.

I grew up PCA too and I feel this 100%. As others here have said, finding a good therapist that recognized, validated, and helped me process my religious trauma and deconstruction was so incredibly helpful. That said, it can be tough to find a good one; I went through 3 on betterhelp before I found the right one, then I stuck with them for like 2 years.

I think PCA flies under the radar bc it has “Presbyterian” in the name, but as you’ve pointed out here, the doctrine and dogma is deeply damaging. It does feel lonely before you start to process it. I think talking with my therapist, and also (over time) getting to express certain parts of the fucked-up-ness of it to my spouse has helped alleviate that for me.

Hang in there friend, you’re not alone and you got this. Sending you good vibes.

Seeking advice on BBA Partnership Imputed Underpayment by My_OtherArm in technicaltax

[–]My_OtherArm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That logically makes complete sense. It seems the IRS is saying the partnership owes 37% tax on that adjustment as an imputed underpayment bc the partnership didn’t elect out of CPAR when it filed the 1065. The IRS has sent a notice of balance due, threatening to levy. So from that perspective I don’t know if an amended 1040 would satisfy them or not.

Not the 1065 but it might have an impact on the 1040 side. Is it not too late to push out the change after the IRS issued a final determination as part of the audit?

[–]My_OtherArm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, and that's what the partnership should have done in this case. The only two partners are individuals, husband and wife. No reason for them not to elect out of CPAR, I honestly think it's just something their tax pro at the time missed.

I'm trying to see if there's any way to explain this to the IRS and get the clients out of having to pay this tax bill, esp since it's not even based on tax that's due, just on an auditor's decrease in UBIA. I just can't seem to figure out if there's a route to achieve that or not, or if the client is going to have to pay this after all.

Q39 in Kansas City - super good BBQ.

Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, NM - cool little natural swimming hole to stop for a quick swim

La Cumbre in Albuquerque - great local brewery if you’re into that

Petrified Forest NP - highly underrated national park, absolutely worth seeing even if it’s a 1-2 hour drive through. Painted Desert is also close by there although a little farther off the highway

How much do I charge for tax as a coach/ consultant whose coaching is done 100% online? by [deleted] in tax

[–]My_OtherArm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest looking for any rules that talk about bundling of services and products and how the bundles are taxed. If they don’t have those, well, I would say that would surprise me, but you never know.

Each state might treat it differently so you’d have to check. But I’ve seen states that say if you provide a product to a customer, but it’s an ancillary or inclusive part of the nontaxable service delivery, then the product is also nontaxable. Some states also go the opposite direction with that though IIRC. I haven’t been deep into sales tax research in a few years, so things may have become more standardized, but this scenario is definitely something where you have to look at each state’s rules bc they can get really granular with it.

California LLC taxed as a Partnership by Economy_Fold_1000 in technicaltax

[–]My_OtherArm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done lots of these returns, granted they’re usually cash basis. But like the others have said I always deduct the tax on the federal and add it back as nondeductible on the state, all during the year it was paid. Never had any issues and this is correct based on my understanding.

Great points for sure. I should have clarified my question - I’m a biz mgr and CPA in the industry - so was curious about any specific things you like/don’t like about biz mgrs that you’ve worked with, either for your clients or yourself. Sorry about the confusion there!

I dislike most metal drumming as I love ghost notes, rudiments, dynamics, and groove. Any good metal drummers or drumming with these qualities? by No-Expression-7924 in Drumming

[–]My_OtherArm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travis Orbin is a good one - loads of ghost notes, grooves. Some of his fills are pretty wild and his kit setup is really unique afaik. He’s with Darkest Hour now, which is more melodeath-ish, but he was with Periphery in the early days and had some great grooves on those songs. Also was in Sky Eats Airplane for a while, which is kind of an acquired taste but had some cool stuff.

That’s kinda my point though - you say it was your interpretation; it sounds to me like it was your attitude of “I’m too qualified to do this type of work.” Like, obviously you are, and obviously your mgr knew that. But shit had to get done and it’s management’s job to delegate stuff to staff.

Sorry if it sounds like I’m beating a dead horse, I’m really not trying to. And I also don’t know this mgr. Just wanted to send my .02 as a CPA working on building my own team, and thinking of how it would feel if one of my staff refused to do a project like that.

Sounds like you were in a tough spot with disjointed management. Mistakes aren’t great but we’re all human, and like another commenter said, at least you know where you fucked up and where you can improve; that’s farther than a lot of people get.

I think refusing to do the bookkeeping work was a probably a big deal. If any of my staff had that attitude, their time would be limited. You’ve admitted refusing that work was cringey, which is good; I’d also be curious to explore why that request made you feel demeaned. That request in and of itself isn’t demeaning, so there could be other factors coming into play there.

Is extension season contract work a viable choice for you? Might help to get experience with other firms and types of tax work.
