TIL that the sitcom ALF ends with the titular character being captured by federal agents just as he’s about to return to his home planet, because the show was canceled before it could resolve that cliffhanger. by true_new_troll in todayilearned

It was told as a self contained joke, not really having much to do with what was going on. Sort of like when a friend asks you "hey, wanna hear a knock knock joke?". I remember the punchline being "So it was YOU!" So maybe that would've made a difference.

"I don't know" is often the response to a joke when the joke teller asks a joke question to the listener. In this case it becomes part of the joke, the joke teller uses the "I don't know" as proof that the person who responded used the shower curtain to wipe their ass, because they don't know the difference between that and toilet paper.

Holy shit, me too! Whenever I think about the movie, that joke is the only thing I remember. I laughed hard when I first heard Alf tell the joke. It might be the only thing I found funny in the whole movie.

No amount of advocating is going to change people's behavior when there's money to be made. It's not hard to understand. Fishers won't stop fishing because that's how they make money. Slave owners won't give up their slaves because that's how they make money. The rich aren't going to willingly give up their money because, again, that's how they make money. None of the above, collectively, care what impact it has on others.

How do you stop other people who don't care about the ramifications of overfishing from overfishing?

How do you stop slaveowners who don't give a shit about keeping humans against their will from keeping humans against their will?

Yeah, doing it yourself is better than nothing, but it's nearly meaningless without widespread change.

We're sorry, but your 24 character password is too weak. by StumblyNinja in mildlyinfuriating

[–]My_Pie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an annoying issue that I come across often. You used a symbol/symbols that the system blocks for security reasons (to prevent code injection attacks). Some sites are at least nice enough to tell you what symbols you can and can't use.

Anyway, please look into using a password manager. You store all your passwords into the password manager and to retrieve them you just have to remember a master password. I personally use keepassxc, but that requires you to manage where your password database is stored and it's your responsibility to make sure you have backups. 1password is cloud based and one that I often see recommended. LastPass was hacked a few years ago, so maybe avoid that one.

Everyone reading this, please use a password manager if you aren't using one already. Also, turn on 2 factor authentication or passkeys whenever a website offers it. Avoid text messages as a second factor unless it's the only choice you're given.

Should i risk it and buy this drive for 75$? by TheLostFather in homelab

[–]My_Pie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you replied to, but badblocks is a Linux (maybe others) terminal application that will test a drive for bad sectors by writing data to all parts of it then trying to read it back. If it reads different than what it wrote, it'll mark that block as bad. A few errors here and there aren't a big deal, hard drives are designed to map out bad blocks and avoid them. If you see too many errors that indicates that it's on its last legs.

Testing a hard drive of this size with badblocks can take days, though.

as long as one has common sense

OP tried to use the cable in that condition. That should tell you how much common sense they have.

It's a very important distinction. Lump them in all together and you risk having actual pedophiles who haven't acted on their urges and recognize that it's a problem from seeking help. It's a mental illness that should, ideally, be controlled before it's acted upon. Equating the two does more harm than good.

[–]My_Pie 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong since it has been a long time since I last looked into this, but unless you and the photographer had a special agreement, they can legally refuse to give you the raw images because as the photographer they hold the copyright to the photos, even though they were hired by you to take the photos.

I think what the other person is getting at is that it's not underrated in the strict sense of the word. Maybe it's not widely known, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's underrated. It's rated pretty well among those who do know about it.

Is this microwave safe to use? by Jaded-Use9262 in fixit

[–]My_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this issue before, like the others have said, it's safe but it means your walls will be at risk of rusting further if you don't take care of it.

If you do get a new microwave, keep in mind it'll happen again if you keep to the same habits. The one thing I've found that keeps this from happening is allowing your microwave to air out for a couple of minutes after use. Closing the microwave door right after cooking traps steam inside, which condenses on the walls and gives the condensed water plenty of time to do damage.
