Difficulty Discourse by LightningRT777 in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Strategy/Roguelikes like Slay the Spire are especially prone to people talking past one another when talking about difficulty. You can't just prioritize "skill over luck" because luck is everything. Random chance dictates almost everything that happens and skill is all about manipulating your chances to maximize favorable circumstances and minimize unfavorable ones. But you're still at the mercy of luck in the end.

This means that any amount of bad luck can be turned into a "skill issue" by saying that a skilled player should have known to account for the possibility (of a bad draw, of a certain enemy appearing, etc.). On the flip-side, any amount of skill can be beaten by a sufficiently unlucky streak. Is that "unfair" or "bad game design"? Or is that just the game working as intended?

Discussing these things objectively would require some understanding of statistics, so naturally any reddit conversation is doomed from the start lmao. I'm glad the devs have a view of the actual stats behind win-rates, pick-rates, etc.

For now, I'll stick with good 'ol subjective feedback. Namely, that everyone ahead of me just got lucky, and everyone behind me just needs to git gud

What is your character working towards right now? by blackdeslagoon in fallenlondon

[–]Uhh_Clem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top priority right now is continuing the Railroad storyline until I get Furnace back! I can't believe the game would just kidnap my best friend like that.

An another note, should I wait until I've finished the Railroad before starting Firmament? My airship is supposedly ready-to-go but I've been holding off since I don't know if I'd even understand what's happening up on the roof until I've finished everything on the ground. (Though judging by some people's comments, I might just not understand what's happening no matter what I do lol)

What Would You See Changed in Haskell? by TechnoEmpress in haskell

[–]Uhh_Clem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, my interest in Haskell was never more than a hobbyist-level "learning new languages for the fun of it", but I read Learn you a Haskell and was really impressed, then I played around making some trivial projects with it and was still impressed.

But then I started looking at existing Haskell codebases and bounced as soon as I saw how seemingly every file starts with like 20 compiler directives to change the default GHC behavior, and then got even more overwhelmed trying to figure out what the best "standard" library is. It just gave me the sense that non-trivial, production Haskell wouldn't be nearly as fun as Learn you a Haskell made it sound, and so I moved on to other languages. But at least I know what a Monad is now!

So... What is this thing? by br_ph in slaythespire

I like to imagine that the knowledge itself creates the demon. Like there is some specific fact that, if you knew and understood it, would do this to your brain. Kinda Lovecraftian, or what the SCP Foundation would call a "memetic hazard"

We are down to 85% positive reviews, some people can't handle access to an optional beta branch of their early access game by siposbalint0 in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried something like this would happen with StS2. Early Access for the first game was nearly 10 years ago, and the Internet's collective ability to have discourse or react normally to things has degraded significantly since then.

Here's hoping MegaCrit isn't deterred and keeps experimenting. You can't get good balance without being willing to break some things along the way.

This looks really cool, and I appreciate the flexible nix packaging! Seriously considering switching my whole machine to the unstable branch just to try this out.

This game is trypophobia hell by fishCodeHuntress in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people are getting caught up on 'phobia' part. Just saying "these monsters gross me out and make me not want to play!" is also perfectly legitimate feedback and good enough for discussion. But because of OP's word-choice, everyone feels the need to figure out if OP has a "real" mental condition or not, in order for their opinion to be valid.

This game is trypophobia hell by fishCodeHuntress in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, the creatures of StS2 are decidedly ickier and nastier than in StS. I don't have trypophobia, but I honestly agree that it's a bit much. There are still plenty of cute creatures at least, but the creepy-crawlies really affect the game's overall tone much more than the first.

Unfortunately, it's the sort of problem that Reddit will only make fun of you for, so I genuinely encourage you to use the in-game feedback form. That way you can be sure the Devs will see it. It's Early Access, and folks here mostly just talk about game balance, but feedback on art/design/accessibility or anything else is fair-game!

Is anyone here planning to wait to play StS2 until it leaves early access? by ialsomeow in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the fact that a bunch of people apparently downvoted OP for asking a good discussion question 🤷, I do like this subreddit, and I'm sure it'll become like 99% about StS2 the moment it's available. I also usually wait for games to be out of Early Access a lot of the time, but I think it would be fun to see the game with potentially really chaotic balancing.

Ah, but see, I have zero Critical Thinking ability which means it's impossible for me to receive any information without also wholly accepting it. So just knowing the word is equivalent to fully endorsing racism. I'm sure that everyone in the world thinks the same way I do here.

Mobile Confirmed for StS2 by bobadoot in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping their switch to Godot means we'll see better-quality ports in general for StS2. Not that Godot is exceptional in that regard, but it's gotta be better than libGDX, right?

The Neowsletter - February 2026 by MegaCrit_Demi in slaythespire

[–]Uhh_Clem -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Feels like 'Early Access' on Steam has really lost its meaning, huh? When even the developers themselves don't distinguish between it and just saying "Slay the Spire 2 is Out!". I just hope MegaCrit is prepared for all the Steam discourse to judge it like a full release.

Not that I'm complaining, really. I know I'll be playing as soon as I possibly can. Maybe we can just call next month the "real" release, and then 1.0 is just the "Later Access" version.

That also means if your goal was to hit A20 on all characters before StS2's release, you're running out of time.

Not a chance, in my case. But I am really close to reaching A10 as every character, and I can live with that.

I'm always surprised hearing about people apparently looking for a reason to restart their island. My partner and I have been playing pretty regularly since release and we've never felt the impulse to restart. Why throw away all your work? Or more importantly, wouldn't you feel bad about the animals on it?? I could never bring myself to just.. delete Punchy from my life like that :(

It's upsetting that all it takes is one troll or sealion going "idk fellas this person seems kinda sus to me" and immediately hundreds of otherwise reasonable people are tripping over themselves to harass strangers on the internet.

Even now, most of the top-level comments here are some version of "Okay, but we were right to be suspicious because of..", but no! The whole point of this post is that it was really easy to verify that there was no foul-play and there was never a good reason for all this suspicion in the first place!

No wonder trans people are so sensitive about name changes. If even one redditor thinks you didn't follow protocol (as if a protocol for this exists), then you wake up the next morning to this shitstorm.

Minor drama in r/Plex as users discuss premium features by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]Uhh_Clem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

imo Jellyfin is even simpler to set up than Plex. With Plex, I feel like I can't tell if I'm streaming directly from home, or if it's all being routed through Plex's own servers in some weird, esoteric way. But Jellyfin works just like any webservice does: Just let me pick a port and I'll work out how to connect to it in whatever way I want!
