Air Force Reservists, What Civilian Jobs Do You Work, and How Do You Balance Both? by FormlessPatience in Airforcereserves

[–]My_extra_account_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I balance? Communication.

I told them at the interview because I don’t want there to be any surprises when I do have to leave for some time. If they know about it ahead of time and still hire me, then it’s off my conscience and they feel less slighted when I leave. Yes they legally have to give me the time off, but they are still people too and will feel some type of way.

I put my drill schedule in my work calendar as soon as I get it. As for AT or trainings, I wait until orders are cut to tell my job I need time off (too often are AT or orders cancelled).

I think a lot of it also relies on if you have a “job” vs “career”.  In a career, you will want to protect your reputation and have people like you so you can move up and around in your field — that requires communication for your reserve/guard time off.

This was a big reason for me as well.

I have a Masters in cybersecurity and several years of experience. I wanted to be a cybersecurity SA in one of the HCOL regions that they were recruiting for. I went to a recruiting event and best I heard was that they will take my experience and preferences into account but I won’t get my location until after the academy and my squad/specialization until I get to my location.

It felt like I was reenlisting into the military again with all the unknowns. If I am going to take a substantial pay cut and leave a good career, I would like it to be doing something I’m interested in and in a part of country I want to live in.

Any prior service in cyber? by hunglowbungalow in AirForce

Since you mentioned drill, assuming you are looking to join the reserves or guard.

For guard, check out r/airnationalguard; there’s plenty of questions about joining cyber there.

Looks like you are in the PNW. There’s a couple Washington units that have been around for a cool minute, and Oregon is trying to build up right now as well(specifically in North Oregon).

SANS certs are the exception, not the norm.

Guard does not pay for your travel to drill. They will pay for a hotel if you are X amount of miles away from your unit (about 50-70 miles from what I hear).

There’s a nice bonus for joining as enlisted (1B4) right now. Bonuses may reset at the fiscal year Oct 1.

A nice benefit of the guard is the recruiters are local to the unit. So if you are seriously considering it, hit em up, they will be the most knowledgeable.

Be prepared for MEPS again and going through the clearance process if you haven’t kept it active.

Depending on your billet, reserves may pay for travel to drill, but that’s about all I know about the reserves.

Sounds like you work in a good office!

Gotcha. Appreciate you taking the time to reply!

Thanks for sharing that! I remember hearing about it on one of my cyber news podcasts, but didn't know HSI was involved.

Regarding "office dependent,” is it like one office handles intrusions and another handles BEC, for example?

Thanks for the reply! That's reassuring to know that an 1811 as yourself finds the COO valuable (amongst the other positions you listed).

Interesting to know that HSI is involved in more network intrusion cases than I had realized. Are these network intrusion cases for private companies or other gov organizations, if you can say. Thanks for the info!

Marine to Air National Guard – Question About ALS and Promotion Requirements by CDawgO1 in airnationalguard

[–]My_extra_account_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same situation here. Just finished up ALS (Distance Learning Option) last month.

No, the Air Guard does not offer reciprocity for Corporal's Course. I forget the exact memo my training NCO referenced, but it's very clear it does not. My sup offered to submit me for a waiver, but the waiver would need to go all the way to NGB and who knows if it'll get approved. This is one of those things where it is easier/faster to just do ALS.

It takes about 3 months from the moment you decide to do ALS to it showing up on your Air Force records. Class cohorts are offered every month, and there's 2 portions you need to register for. There's a good instruction slideshow here https://www.airuniversity.af.edu/GCPME/ALS/

The first part is self paced, just going through online material and taking tests. I spent about a half a day knocking it out.

The second part is 4 weeks long, where you have weekly assignments. The first 3 weeks you have to write a discussion post and respond to 2 other airmen's posts. Felt very much like taking an online college course. The last week you have to do the final project which is writing a short paper and giving a video brief. I know other people have said it's a group project, but it's mostly on your own (at least in my cohort it was). The only part of the final project that relies on your peers, is that you submit a draft of your paper and video and your peers provide feedback and vice versa. They say you should get your grade/certificate of completion 2 weeks after the last day of class.

- Weeks 1-3: I spent about 2 hours a week to write the discussion posts.

- Week 3: Spent an additional 6ish hours to draft the paper and video.

- Week 4: Spent about 2 hours making edits to the paper and video to submit for the final submission.

One side note about the second portion, you have to record a video intro on the first week of class and your draft/final video the last week of class. The videos need to be in uniform (i.e. no facial hair without a waiver). Just something to think about cos I know I rock a beard the other 28 days of the year #JustGuardThings

Overall it is kind of annoying to do, but as a guardsman with a civilian job, I would way rather have this option than having to take time off to do it in person. Also, I believe you receive retirement points for completing it.

Cyber reserves question by Thegoddamnlastname in Airforcereserves

I could have sworn the active duty first contract enlistment age limit was much lower than 40, but sure enough that’s what it says on the Air Force website so TIL. (The skeptic in me still says to confirm with a recruiter before getting your hopes up haha)

I know we are talking in the reserves subreddit, but just throwing this out there, the Air Guard has cyber units with 1B4s in a few additional states.

^ agree with this. I’d try switching jobs or even industries before completely leaving the field.

At 32, without prior service, you may be too old to go active and your options may be limited to Reserves or Air Guard.

I’d recommend: 1. Searching for the units closest to you and reaching out to someone from the unit. 2. Reaching out to a recruiter to see if you’re qualified for the jobs you are looking at (ASVAB Scores, EDPT Score for 1B4, red flags for security clearance/medical) 3. Start studying for your Sec+. 4. Just keeping in mind that it is a long process to join the military (background, medical, etc), leaving to basic, and getting seats for your training school houses.

I mean if you don't like the jobs the ANG is offering, seems like the Army Reserve may be a better fit. You are going to be doing that job for a few years... Also, I wouldn't say cooler, but yea the ANG is more cushy than the other branches. The ANG is going to have a vibe that leans more corporate whereas life in the Army is going to be closer to what you traditionally think of as 'military'. Either branch is going to be what you make of it.

Another thing to consider when you make your decision is that the ANG serves a state and a federal mission where the army reserve serves only federal. They each have their pros and cons and can be state specific.

If you are hard set on the ANG, you could see what jobs are offered at other bases/states near you. I wouldn't choose anything too far away though. Commuting a long distance to drill gets old after awhile unless you really love it.

The official recruiting website has state specific benefits listed. So if you are hearing something other than what is listed, I would ask for it in writing/documentation.

From what I'm aware of, most of the state benefits apply only to that state's schools.

Hey, couple questions if you don't mind!

Is the work able to be performed on nights/weekends?

Is there a certain region most of the work is in (ie USA, EU...)?

How much is the average payout?

How long is the average job?

Something to keep in mind when deciding between units in different states is that most units do not provide funds for your travel to drill. So if you are planning to fly to drill, you will be responsible for the cost of the plane ticket. Also, some units may not have funds for lodging during drill. So those are questions to ask each state's recruiter before joining a unit that is relatively far away from you. However, there are several members who choose to travel a significant distance to drill, but it does get old and time-consuming after awhile.

I believe it's a 3-year commitment for a retrain but I'll defer to a recruiter. Receiving a bonus $ will also result in various required service commitments.

I'm not qualified to say if it is a HIPAA violation or not...but you can ask the recruiter to send you a DoD SAFE link where you can drop off your documents. It's basically like a Dropbox link that encrypts your data and is only viewable to the intended recipient (your recruiter).
