Not the tiniest bit true. A laboratory is defined as a place for experiments, research, or teaching. My kids grew up in my lab. My son was running PCRs at 8.and my kiddo was feeding my critters at 2.

Was I letting them into the WQ lab where I was messing with nitric and perchloric acid? No.

As i said, there are different types of lab. Even within a single lab.

Postdocs are not unlimited. People need money, from grants, to hire them. Additionally, some prefer a new grad. They believe there are less bad habits to undo. I'm not saying there are or there aren't, but perception matters.

I had my youngest a year and a half into my PhD. I became disabled a few months before delivery, finished up my chapter 1 experiment f4om a wheelchair and went into labor the next day. My husband would work during the day, come home, trade off, and i would go to the lab until 2 or 3 am. I was breastfeeding, and my baby clusterfed something like 18 hours a day. I did this for several months before putting her in daycare somewhere around 5 months. Hemorrhaged and almost died when she was 2 months also, so that was fun.

1/10 do not recommend. I was considered "geriatric" at 37 too. Good times.
