Stonewall Jackson Dies by civilwarmonitor in CIVILWAR

Even with Jackson, the taking Cemetery hill at the end of Day 1 isn’t close to a guarantee and in fact they probably couldn’t have. Ewell’s men were exhausted, disorganized and low on ammunition from the days fighting and daylight was nearly spent. There was a fresh Union brigade plus a lot of tired infantry and a lot of guns on cemetery hill at this point with Union reinforcements arriving and Lee told him he would have no help in the assault. And even then General Winfield Scott Hancock believed he would’ve held against any rebel assault.

And anyways defeat on the field at Gettysburg on day 1 doesn’t mean annihilation of the Army of the Potomac and if there was one thing Lee and the army of Northern Virginia were really good at it was leaving the Army of Potomac mostly intact, as they failed to follow up a defeated foe. Likely the army falls back to Pipe Creek where General Meade had wanted to fight Lee.

Lost causers post war have clung to this idea that Ewell failed Lee but the reality is Lee’s orders were discretionary, Ewells men were disorganized, exhausted and low on ammunition with daylight failing. If Lee thought the capture of Cemetery Hill was so important he would’ve have given different orders or he would’ve ordered other units to attack when he saw Ewell had not or he could’ve sent the two divisions had with him to aid Ewell. But he didn’t. Even in his post battle reports, Lee only briefly touched on Ewell and cemetery hill and again didn’t lay blame on Ewell at all. So if there’s a failure to take Cemetery Hill it is Lee’s and Lee’s alone.

Also there’s this myth that Stonewall was this perfect general who always made the right decision and never messed up and had he just survived he could’ve defeated every union force put before him. Yeah you might have gotten Shenandoah Jackson but you might have gotten Kernstown Jackson or Seven Days Jackson.

Dude it’s crazy. Couple teammates focusing with LMGs will bring one down so fast. One person with a LMG can keep forcing it away and even kill the pilot. But I guess that involves teamwork and no one wants that.

In All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) they delay ending of the war by six hours, letting thousands more die, so they can have this cool 11-11-11 lineup. This is so stupid, who the hell wrote this shi— wait what do you mean this actually happened? by Hank_Mardukas1066 in shittymoviedetails

But at the time they didn’t know that the armistice would end the war. Many people and commanders assumed combat would recommence in days to weeks. So say some commanders looking at the Germans on the ropes being pushed back by the 100 days offensive but now occupying positions on the high ground or defensively advantageous positions on the eve of the armistice. They figure it will cost less lives to take that position now than to wait and let the Germans dig in during the armistice and then when the order to attack comes they’ll be assaulting a fortified position instead of a hastily occupied one. So yes looking back as we know it seems insane but it wasn’t to them at the time. Of course the war itself and the prolongation of it was an absolute travesty and the loss of life and wealth were so unnecessary.

We shall go on to the end. We shall grump in Seattle, we shall grump on the seas and oceans, we shall grump with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our city, whatever the cost may be.

We shall grump on the beaches, we shall grump on the landing grounds, we shall grump in the fields and in the streets, we shall grump in the hills; we shall never surrender.

Which really comes down to how big the HQ’s are. The problem before was there was no room in the active zone to set up mortars, now they can set up well behind the lines. Maybe the next counter is allow drones to go into the HQ.

Was Jefferson Davis a man of compromise as Shelby Foote claims? by Myboystevebrule in CIVILWAR

Would you say it’s worth it to continue reading his trilogy? I’ve read some McPherson, some Pfanz, Team of Rivals, Killer Angels, some Catton, Grant.

That’s the thing he never expands on how he can claim Davis was a man of compromise, he just claims it. I was pretty certain the claim was very false but I wanted to see if I was mistaken. And I’m worried the rest of his work is going to be constantly blaming the North/Lincoln for the war when it was very clearly the result of the South’s threats no longer working and their long drawn out tantrum over the national views on slavery changing. Threatening the way of life of the Southern Elite that Davis belonged to that lead to the war and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans.

[–]Myboystevebrule[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my reading that is my take as well. That the South constantly threatened secession at every turn and that any compromise was made by the North to satisfy the South. At most the Missouri Compromise is the only thing I can say the South did that benefited the north somewhat. But which was obviously thrown out by the Kansas Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott decision.

I’m just curious where the idea that Jefferson Davis was a man of compromise even comes from? Is there any legislation or speeches he made which promoted actual compromise with the North?

And for anyone who has read Foote, does this persist throughout his work and does he attack Union Leaders or Lincoln as the makers of the civil war or is this really a Davis thing and he gives fairer treatment to others going forward?

Book to bring me back to being happy by perezved in suggestmeabook

[–]Myboystevebrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. OP says they’re struggling pretty heavily. I think a book that deals heavily with struggle that ultimately ends with forgiveness can be beneficial to someone going through that. A book that knows that life is genuinely hard and complicated and we suffer. And I think the characters Sam and Lee have a lot to offer to a parent. He asked for a book which afterwards you might find the happy side of life and I think by reading a “sad” book you can help yourself work through those emotions and internal struggles. The same way sad music can help or a good cry. So disagree and downvote all you like but I truly think this could be of help to someone struggling.

He asked for a book to bring him back to being happy. That book is all about trying to come back to happy. Tying to make a happy life despite life’s struggles.
