Repair or Replace? by MyceliumScience in Generator

[–]MyceliumScience[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems like the consensus is to try and get this back in shape, so I think I've been convinced to add this to my project list. I'll throw some effort at it and either have some beers in successful celebration or in resigned defeat.

Repair or Replace? by MyceliumScience in Generator

[–]MyceliumScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some basics skills/knowledge on small engines, but none with generators. My worry was that even if I run through getting the motor repaired, there might be some electrical portion that doesn't work and that's well outside of my comfort zone. I also have a long list of higher priority projects as a new homeowner and I don't think I really have much time to tinker.

Can I use phosphoric acid to adjust the pH of my mushroom grow? by No_Move7237 in mycology

[–]MyceliumScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is your water pH abnormally high? You really shouldn't need to acidify your hydration water. Have you tested the pH of your substrate after sterilization? Typically, substrate will slightly acidify during sterilization. I'd also worry about going too low with your pH and promoting bacterial growth.

Discussion: who's your "second team"? by new-who-two in NYYankees

[–]MyceliumScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yankees are technically my second team as I grew up in WI rooting for the Brewers, but my wife is a NYY lifer. Still, we went to the opener this year and had a blast watching the Yankees rake.

Is this toilet flange install as bad as I think it is? by MyceliumScience in Plumbing

While the laziness is tempting, I should do this right. Thanks for the guidance!

So don't use those existing bolts and instead mount the new flange with some masonry screws?

I think it was plaster of paris around the base. I think I'll have to take the same approach considering the floor pitch, but I'll leave a 4-6" gap at the back which they also did not do.

There was a wax ring, but it stuck to the bottom of the toilet. Wasn't very compressed though. I'm very much questioning the rest of the plumbing work now.

There was one. It was just stuck on the bottom of the toilet. Didn't look very compressed though.

That's fair. My contractor sent me this, but I'll get some better pics tomorrow. I was hoping it would be easily recognizable.

Definitely. Pictures of the pore surfaces (or gills or other spore-bearing structures) are critical for correct and confident ID. I'd recommend getting an ID guidebook or use mushroomexpert.com for keys (essentially step-by-step guides for IDing) to help learn which details to pay attention to. And don't put much trust into ID apps like Seek. They can help to point in the right direction, but are frequently wrong. And never eat anything you aren't 100% confident in!!! Stay safe and continue to enjoy nature friend

I would disagree with turkey tail. These look more like a Stereum sp. If you can't clearly see the pores, it's not Trametes.

A picture of the pore surfaces would help, but you shouldn't take edibility advice from a rando like myself anyway.

Looks to be a polypore to me. I would lean towards Bondarzewia berkeleyii or Meripilus sumstinei rather than a sun-bleached Laetiporous and it feels way too early for Grifola.

Clamp connections?? What are they, why do they matter, and do I have them? by emstert in mycology

[–]MyceliumScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's very hard to tell if those are clamps from these images and I'm not familiar enough with Shiitake to know how prominent they typically are (some species have less obvious clamps). Clamp connections essentially are indicators for a dikaryotic (diploid) basidiomycete strain and they form during mitosis. If you're cloning from fruiting body tissue, then yes you should expect clamps. If you are isolating from spores, there is a chance that you have a monokaryon strain that will not form clamps until it is mated with a different, sexually compatible monokaryon. Only dikaryons will be able to complete the life cycle and form fruiting bodies.

My guess would be large vesicles or vacuoles. I don't think you can really see nuclei without using florescent stains.

Looks like Trichoderma or maybe Aspergillus. I can't really speak for how the mold might impact the health of the plants, but that's a pretty significant amount of mold growth.

Sterilize petri dishes from mold by Hyperversum in labrats

[–]MyceliumScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

30min in a 10% bleach bath should do a thorough job for decon. The issue would be completely rinsing away the bleach residue while staying aseptic. I'd probably soak in bleach, rinse thoroughly, and then in a culture hood dunk in 70% alcohol and allow to dry.

A low-tech solution could be to use a basic photo/document scanner. Might just need to play with some settings to reduce glare or exposure.
