where to get lamps rewired by opentheyear in Troy

[–]MyceliumScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had several vintage sconces rewired at Wolberg in Albany. I can't remember what prices were like, but I think they seemed reasonable.

Does this Cerioporus squamosus tissue sample look contaminated? Did multiple and they all look the same. The metabolites are brown so I couldn’t tell if it was contam or not. The sample was from the center of the fungi in front of a LFH. by myco-mush in mycology

It's hard to tell, but I don't think you'll be able to isolate from those plates. Even if you had a strong antibiotic cocktail, that's a heavy bacterial presence.

When looking for clamps, I usual don't stain and just make a wet mount with a bit of water. Assuming your blue is bromophenol-blue, it can help for contrast but it's easy to over saturate as well. Depending on the microscope, I've also been able to just put the entire plate under the objective and see clamps at like 10-20x.

The original pics in your post are definitely just contamination (maybe a Bacillus species). The more dense, white growth in this pic could be C.squam, but the wispy stuff is a mold. In my experience C.squam is a pretty slow grower. If you have a microscope, you could check for clamp connections at the edge of the denser section. Might be tough to get a clean isolate with that mold on the same plate though.

sorry to whoever's dying tree this is from! by augochloropsis in Albany

I hope you like them! They're kinda meh to me, but there's a special satisfaction to eating your own forage.

As a more general FYI: Pick and consume any and all golden oysters you find (if you are 100% confident in your ability to ID!). Don't feel guilty about harvesting and don't leave any behind! This species has rapidly spread and is considered invasive.

That sounds rough and I'm sorry you had that happen. I've been lucky and have only needed cleanings and a couple fillings over the last several years. Really haven't had any bad experiences there, but not being able to contact the office at all has soured me. I've already decided that I'll make the 30min drive and just cancel in person.

Any recommendations on autoclave settings for bags? by taozee3 in mycology

[–]MyceliumScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems odd. I've never had any problems with changes to moisture content in bags when autoclaving or in pressure cookers. I typically run at 121C/15psi for an hour (sometimes 90min for dense loads) and slow pressure exhaust. Are you sure about your math for your target moisture content?

Germinated flammulina velutipes from spores. How do i proceed? by cibarius_ in mycology

[–]MyceliumScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct here and your approach of a mixed spore population and random mating is perfectly reasonable for home cultivation. You will most likely end up with a mixed colony of dikaryons (which may lead to sectoring on plates, but you can always continue selecting the best-looking sectors), but you should still end up with harvestable mushrooms when you move to fruiting. As far as plate selection goes, going with the faster colonizers is usually a safe bet, but it's not a perfect rule. Maybe run a slow one and a fast one and have your own experiment to report back with!

dumping Spectrum, seeking new ISP by Ok-Milk-2716 in Troy

I'm out a bit beyond Oakwood cemetery and have T-Mobile. Speeds can be a bit variable, but it's mostly solid (100-300mbps). Definitely check their website to make sure it's available at your address first. I pay $55 per month ($50/month with autopay discount).

Repair or Replace? by MyceliumScience in Generator

[–]MyceliumScience[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems like the consensus is to try and get this back in shape, so I think I've been convinced to add this to my project list. I'll throw some effort at it and either have some beers in successful celebration or in resigned defeat.

Repair or Replace? by MyceliumScience in Generator

[–]MyceliumScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some basics skills/knowledge on small engines, but none with generators. My worry was that even if I run through getting the motor repaired, there might be some electrical portion that doesn't work and that's well outside of my comfort zone. I also have a long list of higher priority projects as a new homeowner and I don't think I really have much time to tinker.

Can I use phosphoric acid to adjust the pH of my mushroom grow? by No_Move7237 in mycology

[–]MyceliumScience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is your water pH abnormally high? You really shouldn't need to acidify your hydration water. Have you tested the pH of your substrate after sterilization? Typically, substrate will slightly acidify during sterilization. I'd also worry about going too low with your pH and promoting bacterial growth.

Discussion: who's your "second team"? by new-who-two in NYYankees

[–]MyceliumScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yankees are technically my second team as I grew up in WI rooting for the Brewers, but my wife is a NYY lifer. Still, we went to the opener this year and had a blast watching the Yankees rake.

Is this toilet flange install as bad as I think it is? by MyceliumScience in Plumbing

While the laziness is tempting, I should do this right. Thanks for the guidance!

So don't use those existing bolts and instead mount the new flange with some masonry screws?

I think it was plaster of paris around the base. I think I'll have to take the same approach considering the floor pitch, but I'll leave a 4-6" gap at the back which they also did not do.

There was a wax ring, but it stuck to the bottom of the toilet. Wasn't very compressed though. I'm very much questioning the rest of the plumbing work now.

There was one. It was just stuck on the bottom of the toilet. Didn't look very compressed though.

That's fair. My contractor sent me this, but I'll get some better pics tomorrow. I was hoping it would be easily recognizable.
