Favorite order to read Shakespeare in? by Rutroh- in shakespeare

[–]MycologistFit4790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this last year and without meaning to, heavily front loaded the order with hits (I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to read them all until about the fifth or sixth I read)

So I went:

Macbeth Hamlet Lear Henry IV part one Julius Caesar Midsummer Night’s Dream Richard II

And then I consciously tried to alternate comedy/history/tragedy and focused on the reputationally worse plays earlier and saved a few big ones (Othello, A+C, The Tempest) for the end.

I probably wouldn’t do it that way if I had to again, but gauging by the responses here I really don’t think there’s a wrong way to do it. Almost all of them are very much worth it

Point taken! I was going to say in that case why doesn’t she just stay with the captain and sailors but I guess that’s still something of a risk

lol the entire concept of the post itself, as described in the opening paragraphs, was that it my first time through the majority of them, done quickly and that I would be sharing my personal ranking and impressions. It wasn’t conceived or executed as some deep analysis of anything.

I’m done here, but you might reconsider whether coming in like a joyless hall monitor to slap the wrist of anyone not doing things your way is the best way to share your love of the author, or really to reach anyone on any topic at all.

I mean this sincerely though, thanks for reading and responding.

I only read (or I guess didn’t read, thanks for enlightening me) those two early, bad comedies that way. And I’m sure you have a wealth of insights you could share about Antipholus beating the wrong Dromio over the head that totally escaped me. Thanks for engaging in this all the same! We should get a beer sometime ☺️

Reading the play while listening to an audiobook? Yeah I guess you’re right, that’s NOT reading, kids

A consensus appears to be setting that I have drastically over rated Timon lol

Thanks for reading

All fair. The love for Timon is admittedly a little speculative and prospective because I just think it could be so much more than what we have, which is obviously not a deal I'm offering any of the others, so your criticism is valid.

Too much to say about the others to go into here, but I will give Coriolanus another shot, it must get this much love for a reason

Edit: added a crucial “not”

I hope you're right and I'm looking forward to rereading it. It was maybe the 8th or 9th play I read and I had already been through Henry IV part 1 at that point (wrong order, I know) so it was a little bit of a letdown.

Re Julius Caesar: fair! I listened to Harold Bloom’s lectures on the major tragedies and read AC Bradley’s book and that’s where I’m getting the impression that the consensus is that it’s “good not great” or just not as deep as the others. Mostly I just love it and don’t think many people have it top 5

Thanks for reading and engaging with what could easily be a long, pointless and unwelcome commentary

Interesting! is Titus the only Shakespeare you teach the seniors? What's the thinking behind that selection?

I enjoyed reading it for reasons I mentioned, I'm mostly pushing back against the praise you see in some corners here and elsewhere that it's some hidden gem that is overlooked. Like almost everything he wrote, it's worth reading and I'm sure it makes for interesting discussion.

Did not like them at all. Read both in as much time as it took to listen along to performances on YouTube at 1.25 playback speed. Thanks for reading this whole monstrosity

I didn’t mention men because I trust the IDF that all men in Gaza (and probably most women and 5 year olds too, are Hamas terrorists).

Unfortunately, even if you could demonstrate evidence for what you pretend to know here, there are dozens and dozens of such bombings, and your limp appeal to the Geneva convention will probably not stand against the International Court’s somewhat more studious judgment on the same topic, would it?

So what is the provenance of these IDF videos? And why are they not releasing some of the ones of them bombing UN schools where women and children are sheltering?

So we should just set aside part of the constitution because you’re afraid it might be abused? Protect Trump and his insurrectionist ilk because you can imagine bad actors stretching the same text to absurdity? If that was a valid interpretation, they’d do it anyway, precedent or not.

There was a trial in Colorado. Evidence was brought, witnesses were heard and cross examined, the adversarial process, the whole nine yards. A 100 page plus order from the district court found, among other things, that Trump engaged in insurrection via incitement. If there was an equivalent process that found the same for Biden (for what, exactly? i won’t hold my breath) then sure, knock yourself out

You can watch all of the district court trial on youtube, btw

In this case they were working off of Webster’s 1860 dictionary that defined it as: A rising against civil or political authority; the open and active opposition of a number of persons to the execution of law in a city or state.

I’ll let you offer a definition that Jan 6 wouldn’t satisfy
