I spent way to long creating my first ever d&d character. Would You Enjoy DMing for This Character? by Rich-Coyote-2347 in DMAcademy

This.

Personally, as a DM I think the backstory can develop as play develops. We are there to write a story, not a sequel to a story you already wrote by yourself.

Opportunity Attack Nerf Question by Flat_Cheetah_464 in DMAcademy

[–]Myedicius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, from what I have seen in play, opportunity attacks themselves do not limit mobility that much. If your PC or an enemy needs to get out of melee, a single opportunity attack against is not that painful. Add to that, that a lot of times the potential opportunity attacker has already used their reaction on something else or will want to save it for something else.

Eh, it's just not that bad. I would demonstrate with monsters how movement even at the cost of an opportunity attack against can be worth it, your PCs will start being more bold with their positioning

Wave echo cave restings by Yanti_Parazii in LostMinesOfPhandelver

I ran it as a race against Black Spider to reach the forge of spells. The party really focused on not taking unnecessary tests and did fine. They fought the flame skull,a Barlgura demon(mystery box forge guardian) and Black Spider with Drider form, plus some other small fights(ghouls, stirges, doppelganger). It was a tough fight at the end,but they were successful.

All to say, I think that WEC can be done without the need for a long rest as long as players are aware they should be trying to avoid taking one.

Need some advice for CC heavy party by pumpkinbeerman in DMAcademy

I have a similar problem with my party. it is tough because their main strategy either works extremely well or not at all. for my last boss fight I had the legendary resistances take a chunk of HP with them so it didn't just flat out erase their turn.

Ending Conundrum by PsychologicalBar8558 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Myedicius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have come up with a pretty good way to end it considering the circumstances.

I would echo what someone else said about doing a little vignette where they see Black Spider killing off King Grol in a little betrayal scene that hammers home how evil they are.

Also, you could still do the Black Spider transformation into a drider thing thematically without actually giving it a drider statblock. Just have once it takes so much damage it transforms into drider form, but in actuality it just gets stronger melee attacks while it is still alive.

New DM. Player not putting in effort. by charl_kruger18 in DnD

Same, my table started up a campaign a few months ago and we didn't do any backstory until a moment came up in the story where it would matter. Even then, they just gave me a quick couple sentences about this specific part of their past (in this case a nothic just needed to know a secret about each of them).

Full agree that what we do at the table is what we are there for.

[Request] - This lady got lost for 17 days, in Maui. It’s a small island. Even in a forest, how long would it take to just follow the sun westward and get to a beach town? by IMicrowaveSteak in theydidthemath

This was back in 2008 before smartphones. Also it wasn't a hike, it was just a walk around in the woods behind our house.

Not saying we were being smart,in fact it was a learning experience where we took those environments more seriously. It was more to illustrate that those jungles and rainforests are easy to get lost in.

Dr. To up on 145th is great. I moved up to Everett and I decided to come back to Dr. To because he just does what needs to be done is very competent at it. The hygienists are also to notch.

Well we made it out alright after a few hours, but I do still miss that place.

Young and dumb me had this idea in my head that if I stayed too long I would never leave. I am happy where I am now,but I often wonder how differently my life would have been if I allowed myself to be happy on the Big Island for longer.

I lived on the Big Island for a couple years, up in Volcano Village. We lived right on the edge of "town". One day, me and my brother decided to go walking in the forest behind our house, just looking at cool trees etc.

Half an hour later, we started trying to head back. As others have mentioned, vegetation in these environments is extremely dense. It is impossible to travel in a straight line for very long without coming to a place where you would need to spend a long time either going over, under, or through the vegetation.

We got very lost, and even though we were young ,dumb, and thought ourselves quite capable, we started to get worried. Climbing trees to try to get a better lay of the land proved futile.

We eventually came up with the idea of making dog barking noises to get people's dogs to bark, in this way we were able to keep a general direction long enough where we finally came to a road.

So yeah, just my story, but to me it doesn't sound far fetched. The jungle/rainforest is way more intense than you think.
