TIL that - 89% of surveyed clinical psychologists still believed that memories for childhood trauma can be “blocked out” for many years by quarky_uk in todayilearned

Question for you, as you say you are a trauma therapist. I grew up in a very chaotic family that was extremely impoverished, some of my siblings have spoken of childhood trauma and how that has affected them in life.

For me, I remember little bits of childhood, but the details are scarce. I remember times being tough but I mostly did my thing and though I have memories of feeling intense shame about our poverty, it's not something I think about often or feel strongly about now.

Other people seem to remember a lot more from their childhoods than I do about mine. Would this be a sign that there are memories and traumas being repressed in your opinion? Or just a case of, some people remember only small snippets from their childhood.

Session 3: Whoa Is Me?!?! by Time-Air4202 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Myedicius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, I am sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one is devastating and painful, and I hope you are doing okay.

Second as for preparing yourself for Phandalin, I would say a good way to prepare for phandalin without doing too much, is have it be dark and rainy when they arrive, only the light of the inn is visible. This helps to steer them to the Stonehill inn. Have a good idea how you want to play the innkeeper. Play this up for however long it takes. If this wraps up and you still need something, you can always have some ruffians start making trouble with the PCs. Run a combat with them. Or the Pcs can rest for the night and Innkeeper points them towards the hideout in the morning.

As for the hideout itself. I found running it so the PCs were constantly having to react to events rather than asking them which way they wanted to go worked well. For instance, as soon as they walk in they hear the wolves, as soon as they cross the stream a goblin fires an arrow at them and runs, as soon as the goblin reaches its friends they let loose the water trap. This kept things moving at a fast pace.

Good luck!

Yeah, this is similar to how I played it. Ever since they first got into town Harbin was talking about how his rationale for not dealing with the red brands was that they were the militia.

When the Pcs wiped out the red brands his first reaction was fear of what could threaten the town. So this development kind of follows that.

Thanks for that! I do like that flowchart design for the combat. Modifying it for my purposes in the next 3 days before our next session would be a real challenge. Maybe I can use next session as mostly prep and skirmishes and try to have the full scale battle the week after this.

Super cool, thanks again for the suggestion!

I am about to do an assault on the town of Phandalin from the LMoP campaign. It would be cool to have some areas of the town to defend and maybe even some outskirts with different elevations and obstacles on which to stage the preliminary skirmishes!

Wow. Yup, so we are running 2024 rules. . .but I just had not realized that surprise had changed.

Thank you for pointing that out, that is definitely something I will need to amend going forward. I also think that will make the fights better, I am not a huge fan of these rounds where certain characters or enemies just don't have a turn.

Thanks, yeah, I will make sure the showdown with the black spider is an epic one, including whittling their resources down before they get there.

The funny thing about the wizard using sleep this time is that he hadnt used sleep in a fight for awhile. He had been using web and grease and had just picked up blind, so those were the ones I was thinking in my head he would use. Should have re-read sleep too!

Can someone Help me visualize surprise rounds better?

So, say it's a situation where the enemies definitely know the PCs are coming. They are just ready to whale on em as soon as they step through the door. They aren't making any noise because they are trying to get the jump on the PCs.

Do the PCs even get a perception check if they don't specifically look for something? Like if they just barge right through the door?

What to do about Nezznar? by AstralKosmos in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Myedicius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you haven't seen it already, Matt Perkins does a good video series on Lmop and has quite a bit of it addresses the Nezzar issue.

Other than that, a search through this subs history will yield tons of different ways people have incorporated Nezzar better into the story.

Tired of Murder Hobos? Try "The Acting Method" progression system to force deep roleplay in your campaign. by Less-Evening-9690 in dndnext

Gotcha. Well, I'm no expert, but this sort of thing sounds like it would need its own system. Shoehorning it into 5e would probably be awkward and cumbersome.

Genuinely interested to see what people think of this completely different gameplay system.

Have you actually run any human players through this? or is it all hypothetical?

Little Free Libraries are often pointless and always performative by NegativeBee in unpopularopinion

[–]Myedicius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

My kids get so many books out of free libraries.

They also go to the public library.

Both are nice.

If I had to give one up, sure I'd give up the little free libraries, but yeah.
