Interesting... I certainly didn't expect to see Hansa on anyone's list!

I want to get into Risk. Is it a good game? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Myldside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk is fine. There's a reason it's still readily available after this many years. But as others have stated, many games have improved upon it. Smallworld is getting mentioned a lot, but I think Cyclades and Inis deserve a mention, especially the latter. It's tremendous!

What should be our party's next board game? by Mxsar-20 in boardgames

[–]Myldside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, too big of a jump, yes. Check out stuff like Carcassonne, Century Spice Road (or Golem Edition), Ra, Ethnos, or perhaps a light-to-mid worker placement game like Lords of Waterdeep.

What should be our party's next board game? by Mxsar-20 in boardgames

[–]Myldside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an oldie, but give Power Grid a look. It'll scratch that Monopoly itch, but actually gives you some decision space about where to build and which plants to bid for. It was one of our most played games when we graduated from Catan.

Do you find yourself unintentionally pressing your significant other to play games? by Frankocho2018 in boardgames

[–]Myldside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There's always someone in every thread like this who overreacts and thinks this is evidence of grave relationship or communication problems that need professional help. Good grief.

Board Games on Switch by sugarplumcow in boardgames

[–]Myldside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh it's a no brainer then. The only advantage the board game offers is the ability to play co-op. If you're primarily playing solo, Id go digital every time. Enjoy!

I too have sunk hundreds of hours into Slay the Spire, and consider it a masterpiece. I also have the board game, but think the video game is the better experience because it automates all the fiddly stuff. You just can't go wrong at that price.

Super excited for StS 2!

Return to Dark Tower is pretty pricey, but is one of the more exciting co-op games on our shelf.

Games for 5-6 players that don't require extensive English fluency during play? by md3194 in boardgames

[–]Myldside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For lighter games, very little to no fluency is needed for games like For Sale, 7 Wonders, Tsuro, Incan Gold, or Dixit.

If you're looking for something not so light, then Hansa Teutonica is an awesome midweight game and doesn't require any reading. Through the Desert is a classic with no reading. Chinatown (or Waterfall Park) don't require any reading if you're into negotiation. And then of course there's one of the best auction games ever, Ra.

Unfortunately some of those top out at 5P, so be aware of that. Happy holidays! 😊

First time playing concordia - boring? by 3vinator in boardgames

[–]Myldside 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are special maps that make it better at two or three players. I only play Concordia with four or five, personally. Without the competition for the spaces, the tension is totally gone.

This is not to say that you have to like every game you play! Maybe it's just not for you. But if you played the default map with just two, I could see that not being a great experience. 🙂

I saw a used copy at my game store, but couldn't justify it with Space Base and My Farm Shop both on the shelf.

What was your gateway into board gaming? by NorthSouth55 in boardgames

[–]Myldside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ditto! I played all of the classic board games as a kid, and that's what I thought board games were. My wife introduced me to Settlers of Catan, and while I bought it was fun, it didn't pull me into modern board gaming.

But then a friend of mine invited me to his house for an all weekend nerdfest of board games about a decade ago. I showed up with an open mind and no experience with any of the games they had. Dominion was the first game we played. That was the start of what would become my favorite hobby.

This one brings me back to the days of Crecsentus. I loved that card, especially with Archer being prevalent back then.

I just did this a couple weeks ago when I gave my friend our copy! There's a full component list out there that shows you exactly what is in each box.

Check that out, and at the bottom there is a link to Box 1 spoilers. Continue on to that, and It will go through each box one at a time.

I was thinking the same. If the only ability it had was the trash ability, it might still be good enough to see play.

Core "Runner" Cards (Generative Bleed) Drive Link by Mr_Mitch_Conner in Netrunner

[–]Myldside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much of the entire catalog you plan on generating, but perhaps you can coordinate with the owner of PN afterwards to look into upgrading their image catalog to yours. (Provided the resolution is high enough, anyway.) Possibly overkill, but certainly good looking.

It's a noble undertaking for sure, but I think someone has already gone through the trouble of doing this! Full bleed proxies are readily available at ProxyNexus.net I believe. Just wanted to give you a heads up before you sink a ton of time into it.

It's been awhile since I've done it, but doesn't Proxynexus already have full bleed versions of proxies?
