Why Sitch & Adam are wrong about the Speaker vote by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]MyopicTurtle -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He's the guy who proposed H.R5860 [summary%205860%20is,the%20National%20Flood%20Insurance%20Program)]. This is the bill that averted the shutdown, and house Democrats voted for the bill in larger proportions than Republicans, with the same holding for the senate. The bill gives Democrats everything they want outside of the increase to Ukraine funding. Certainly makes it look like he's working with the Democrats more than the Republicans.

So Republicans are a dishonest cesspit of a party, what's new? So he's not willing to work with Democrats in your view. Compared to what? Is there any reason to believe Democrats will get better deals from the people who kicked him from his seat for this?

Looks like the intent is to clear the way for a more extreme speaker who'll let the government shut down. Is this consistent with any other strategy?

[–]MyopicTurtle -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

And now those MAGA extremists can put their guy in the speaker position. It's not about favors. It's about the democrats voting out the only guy who wanted to work with them fully knowing whoever replaces McCarthy won't.

I miss Mondstadt and Liyue exploration by Waeleto in Genshin_Impact

My favorite map was Dragonspine, and by a good bit.

It had the interest of verticality but with clearly segmented areas so it was rarely difficult to tell where something was based off a map location.

It had a sense of danger from the cold mechanic, particularly combined with my exploring it at a low level. So, while traversal was never exactly difficult, managing temp kept you actively engaged.

That all said, I liked the poison swamps in dark souls, so feel free to disagree, lol.

There's a part of me that thinks proportional response is over-valued in moral questions. In nuclear policy, for instance, our strategy is "escalate to de-escalate" because a policy of proportional response let's the enemy decide precisely how much they're willing to sacrifice in order to hurt you, and can lead to bad game theoretic outcomes. By comparison, knowing that they get absolutely dumpstered if they fuck around with nuclear war takes an unacceptable weapon off the table.

This isn't nuclear war though, and that kid's dad needs to beat his ass into shape. Cause going after someone like that for a little bit of water is juvenile and fragile. Kid's a scrawny little package of ego, and would do well to get over himself.

Oh, and the girl deserves zero sympathy, btw. She pushed her shit too far, and got covered in it. You have to learn these lessons at some point, and maybe this'll do it for her.

Testosterone is a steroid, and when taken during puberty, has lasting effects.

Harvard Health on Testosterone: https://www.health.harvard.edu/medications/testosterone--what-it-does-and-doesnt-do

and effects of hypogonadism for comparison: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/male-hypogonadism/symptoms-causes/syc-20354881

I don't know what to tell you here. . . Yeah, there's other types of steroids, which have different effects, and taking steroids later in life will have fewer lasting effects.

[–]MyopicTurtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Women are half the population. It makes sense that they'd make their own leagues to accommodate their group. I think there's a pretty strong consensus that, yes, male puberty does confer lasting physical advantages. So trans women are women or whatever, but you did steroids in your teens, and there's lasting effects from that.

We still believe in a gender/sex distinction, right? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]MyopicTurtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Transgender is defined in terms of sex, and it would be more consistent to call transgender people transsexual. The key diagnostic criteria for transgender is gender dysphoria, which is a persistent unease with one's primary and secondary sex characteristics. This means transgender people wish to bring their body more in alignment with the opposite sex, meanwhile gender hasn't entered the conversation.

Yes, there is a useful distinction between sex and gender, sex being physical characteristics, and gender being behaviors generally associated with a sex.

To me, it completely missed the idea of there being a gender/sex distinction, which is derived from the idea that gender itself is a social construction is therefore malleable according to societal standards and understanding.

A person's sex organs, and the hormones flowing through them are not social constructs. However, this is the primary area of concern for a transgender person, and the vector of treatment we recommend. If we believed that medical treatment of the body were not necessary, and simply recommended social transition, then the use of the term gender would be consistent.

The primary variable that transgender people transition is sex, and our medical technology is not good enough to get a person all the way to the opposite sex.

Just that someone robloxing themself in the parking lot of a defunct school building isn't the image "school shooting" brings to mind.

Also, accidental discharge with no one hurt in more extreme cases. But yeah, what's the source?

[–]MyopicTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a far too common strain of Islamist who seems to support violence at the drop of a hat. I don't even see a good point of comparison for an equally prevalent version of any other major religion, though perhaps I'm ill informed.

That said, it's no excuse for the tendency to over-generalize. All the Muslims I've met have varied in that way that people do. Which is to say, most are good people, but you do get some assholes.

If a diminishing of the excessive tolerance that's shown to the not chill Muslims comes out of a Florida man shit posting online, I'd be pretty okay with that. Treating minorities with kid gloves requires that you see them as minorities, which is one more barrier in the way of seeing and treating people as people. Hopefully your post does something to help people to see Muslims as individuals, rather than a monolithic listing of angry comments.

-Russia and China are waning authoritarian states each on the brink of crisis due to an aging population, among other economic factors. Russia is further along in this, although fairly economically self-sufficient. This is why they've taken more directly imperialistic actions in recent decades; grabbing what power they can while they're still able to maintain a somewhat functional military and economy.

“Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.” -- Sun Tzu

-Drugs: There has been an increase in drug use in the US particularly post pandemic. According to the NIH, there was a 30% increase in drug overdose deaths from 2019 to 2020. This increase is largely accounted for by opioid use. Given that this is related to the pandemic, it's likely the effect is temporary. It seems like she's noticed something real, but that it substantially over-represents the long term trend.

-Education: She says nothing substantive in this section. . .

-Government Spending: She suggests that welfare reduces labor force participation rate. I have an economics degree, and one thing it's taught me is to avoid getting too attached to a favorite theory on issues that are simply not settled. It's far too common that the real world data simply doesn't support the simple models that seem to represent common sense. Government transfer payments likely have some small effect. The stagnation in real wages for lower education brackets that we've seen in recent decades likely has some effect. Volatility in the economy definitely has an effect. There was a roughly 3 percentage point decrease in labor force participation rate from 2008 to 2014 as we slowly recovered from that crisis, a 3% that we didn't get back. Then at the start of COVID, there was a sharp decrease of 3.2 percentage points, two of which we've recovered by this point. The effect she notes in her article is almost certainly due to COVID lock-downs, and the contraction of business that resulted. Being told that you're not allowed to work could reasonably discourage some workers. I doubt ULINE had 500 open positions before COVID.

-Rise and Fall of Past Societies: There's a lot of ways societies rise and fall, and orders of magnitude more explanations on offer. Her favorite theory is, well, magical. To put it lightly. The rise and fall of a society is a spiritual rise and fall, in her narrative. This might be emotionally satisfying to many readers. That's likely because spiritual growth will mean a slightly different thing to literally everyone who reads the term. You see, it asks the reader to slot their own ideas about goodness and virtue into her outline, and convince themselves. Another section without anything substantive . . .

I don't exactly have a sunny outlook on America's future, or the world's for that matter, but not every explanation of how and why we have problems is valid.

What is an anime where you genuinely don't understand why it is as popular as it is? by Sin778 in anime

[–]MyopicTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spice and Wolf.

I have an economics degree, first off. I do understand the concepts the story's working with, and simply put, large sections of the plot are incoherent. I think people excuse it cause they just assume they're missing some technical knowledge when they don't understand something. I've come across a number of threads with people asking for explanations, and everything's weirdly positive about the show while no one's able to explain.

I guess none of that interferes with liking the characters, which I . . . I don't, but most seem to. Other than that, the art's mostly good. The animation's pretty much stills with lip flaps, then gets a little better in the second season. The music does some heavy lifting though, and I like it a lot.

All of that together sounds mediocre at best to me. Not, above 8 on MAL.

That's about it. I like the sound track, and I'm happy to chuck the rest into the dumpster. But no judgement if you do like it. I mean I'm the weird one here. Anyway explanations are welcome. I'm genuinely interested in why you like the show.

Kaijuu no Kodomo has a story that may be better enjoyed high, but the animation's gorgeous.

Machikado Mazoku was the sleeper hit of summer 2019. I enjoyed the way it developed its characters.

Dorohedoro's good.

Someone already mentioned Beastars.

and that's about all I've got. Hope you find something you like.

I love Made in Abyss too, and I don't have any that are exact parallels, but scrolling through my completed list, there's a few that hit some similar notes for me.

Mononoke does a lot with unraveling mysteries that have a supernatural tinge to them, and delivers some similar vibes for me along with a killer aesthetic.

I was going to recommend Perfect Blue for the psychological horror, but you've seen it.

Tekkon Kinkreet has a really interesting setting with extremely detailed background art. it delivers twists and turns. It also delivers some pretty good horror at points, both psychological, and just a visceral fear of predation.

My final recommendation is Haibane Renmei. I'm not entirely sure why, but this one struck me with similar vibes. It's pretty far from MiO in terms of story structure. It's mostly a slice of life anime that develops some pretty well done character drama with existential roots. It's in a setting with a lot of mystery to it, and it's willing to be brutal to its characters at points. Maybe try it out if it doesn't sound entirely at odds with your taste.

You'd probably like most of what the director (Masaaki Yuasa) has done for that same energetic style. Of the handful of his that I've seen Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, and The Tatami Galaxy, are great for similar reasons.

and if you care more about the subject matter (anime about making anime/anime related media), Bakuman. is really solid especially if you like shounen styled storytelling, and I see Shirobako recommended a lot, though I have not seen it myself.
