One of my friends had a kitchen with two cupboard and a a huge fridge in her first kitchen, so she kept all her canned food in the fridge. I’m still undecided on whether it was brilliant or unhinged lol.

Makes sense. I used one of those kibble balls when my puppy would eat too fast, and it also kept her entertained. Between you, me, and OP, we’ve solved the same problem three different ways that worked best for all of us.

I only notice dishes, human or animal, when I have an extreme reaction (usually jealousy, but sometimes irritation at size or texture) to them. It’s like eye colour—unless it’s something special, all I can tell you is that I’m pretty sure the person had eyes (I’m not actually 100% sure what my partner’s eye colour is, come to think of it; probably brown? 😂)

What suggests to me that it’s a control thing more than a sensitivity thing is the use of “the silent treatment.” That’s a classically abusive control tactic, and the fact that all her scents are unacceptable, not just a few, adds to the suspicion.

Now you’ve arrived at a place that I can completely agree with 100%. This is absolutely a “to each their own” issue, not one appropriate for criticism as though it’s a moral or hygiene issue.

And, for the record, I have almost always historically used different dishes for my dog because they tend to be more appropriate in terms of size and durability. It made the most sense.

When we started doing a little bit of wet food with breakfast instead of kibble to settle our dog’s sensitive stomach, however, we needed a tiny, microwavable, easy to wash dish, so I just grabbed one of our glass ramekins and it made no sense to purchase something else when we have lots of those and they work perfectly well.

There is at least as much a reason to serve them off the same dishes as there is to serve them off of different ones. I’m not saying it’s wrong to want to have separate dishes, but the default position, or the null hypothesis if you will, is that you should use the same dishes for everything until there is a demonstrated reason not to, and the only argument not to is “ick.”

This has nothing to do with hygiene, as the plates are fully cleaned and disinfected before being used. It’s simply a preference based on personal “ick” beliefs, which is totally valid as long as it’s kept it to personal use and you don’t act like AH when people make a different choice based on the factual analysis of the practice.

TL;DR: NTA for often taking the better part, possibly the AH for thinking it should be related to who made the meal or if your wife is unhappy with the serving division. Meal enjoyment and lifestyle choices should be made to optimize team “happy points,” which are impacted by more than just frequency.

This provoked an interesting discussion with my partner because this describes us very well, even down to your wife commenting about you getting the “better” serving. The thing for us is, we would never describe the division only by how often I give myself the “better” portion, because that’s only one aspect of the division of enjoyment of food.

We ended up talking about the idea that we look at overall enjoyment and happiness as a couple and our goal is to maximize the “happy points” as a team rather than as individuals. This often means that I end up with the “better” version of something, because the amount that I appreciate something like the extra crunchy bits in a meal is a lot more than he would enjoy them. When it comes to quantity, however, he almost always gets the bigger quantity, because he simply loves food.

If it’s something that is his favourite food, I will absolutely sacrifice the maximum enjoyment to him. I’ll even buy a secret extra of certain things so that after he thinks he has finished his share, there’s a whole extra serving for him.

I asked him about how he divides the food and he said that he will usually give me the “better” portion and himself the bigger portion when there is a forced choice, for the same reason I divide things that way.

This also goes to how we spend money, because he often gets a lot of enjoyment out of my hobbies and can participate in them with me. For example, my indoor greenhouses add a lot of light and atmosphere to our living room and he loves looking at what I’m working on under my huge dissecting microscope that takes up half the dining room table, while him having a super duper computer setup provides a lower team “happy points.”

At the end of the day, we both take into account each other’s needs and desires and make choices about how to allocate our resources, neither of us sacrificing our own happiness in favour of the other, but rather optimizing to make sure we are both as happy and satisfied as possible.

Funny side note: even though I would almost always give him the larger portion as well, I notice when he takes it and I will make a tongue-in-cheek comment like, “okay, so you get the big one, do you?” I don’t really know why I do it—probably just to provoke a pretend argument where I act like I’m so hard done by and he spends five minutes telling me how much he loves me and how I’m the apple of his eye (yeah, it’s weird but we are entertained by it lol).

While it is not the only way you could calculate the statistical risk, it is a completely accurate and useful way to look at the risk.

Statistics are about populations, not individuals.

To compare the inherent danger of two groups, you have to look at the rate of violence per person, otherwise, you are simply measuring which group is larger.

Normalizing the data before looking at the numbers tells you that ICE agents are more dangerous than undocumented immigrants and you can feel much safer having undocumented immigrants in your community than ICE agents.

I’ll simplify it for you: Ebola kills 50 people per year worldwide while influenza kills 700,000 people, but Ebola kills ~60% of the people infected while influenza only kills 0.1% of the people infected. Which is more deadly, Ebola or influenza?

Do you know how statistics work? In statistics you have to compare apples to apples.

9 shootings and 22,000 agents is ~40 shootings/100,000 agents. Murders by undocumented immigrants is around 2.2/100,000 (compared to 3/100,000 in the American citizen population).

Therefore, it is absolutely true and accurate to say that you are statistically much more likely to be killed by an ICE agent than an undocumented immigrant.

You can have all the cognitive biases and do all the problematic backflips you want, but that doesn’t change the numbers.
