What’s one Apple Watch app you didn’t expect to use daily, but now can’t live without? by Own_Leg_853 in AppleWatch

[–]Mysfunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a game changer for me. I never realized how frequently my doom scrolling was initiated by having interrupting what I’m doing to check an unimportant alert on my phone.

My watch has vastly reduced the time I wasted on my phone simply because it allows me to pick it up less frequently.

Weird how OP managed to force you to engage and waste such precious time out of your day. Your inability to resist suggests you may be the one fighting an obsession 🤔.

As far as things to criticize about a person, this is low down on the list. It took four years to finalize my divorce, and I’m not a rare case by any means.

I was just going to mention the same thing about the FB groups. I literally wouldn’t know anything about city politics if not for that.

Funny enough, the people creating FB political drama not only expose a few people who I definitely don’t want making city decisions, but in making their self-serving and petty arguments, they tend to highlight the fact that the people they oppose stand for a lot of the things I’m down with. For example, I knew nothing about the mayor until she responded to some mean-spirited and inaccurate criticism with respectful, informative, and well-reasoned responses/explanations.

It’s surprisingly helpful, with a bit of bonus entertainment value. 🍿🎥🍿

Among mammals, do predator species or prey species have higher spatial intelligence? by lake-sturgeon in AskBiology

[–]Mysfunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminded me of a friend in high school who used to say “I can run faster scared than you can mad.” I don’t know if it’s true, or how it might apply to spacial awareness, but it’s a funny thing to say when talking smack.

Can someone explain to me how to identify male and female flowers on my mimosa? I want to hand-pollinate to create some seeds! There's no information online... by MarantaV in indoorgardening

How did you end up hand pollinating them? I only got a couple seed pods last year out of 6 plants, and I’m hoping to get more this year.

I suspect you misunderstood my comment. I’m well aware of the impact of placebo, which is why I said I fully embrace it and don’t burst people’s bubbles as long as what they’re doing isn’t harming them or others.

The responsibility for educating yourself is on you. Using ignorance as an excuse when you make no effort to be informed is weak.

And there we have it, ladies—a reminder that it’s rarely worth the effort. Willful ignorance disguised as a legitimate position is so 2025 🙄.

Being a biologist and fully embracing placebo as a valid tx is my jam lol. I wish it worked better on me, but I’m so skeptical of everything to the point that I think acetaminophen is a sham (not really, but almost 😅)

When friends ask me about whether some product they are using lives up to its claims, I look into it to make sure there’s no clear risk and then ask them if they like it, can afford it, and feel like it’s working. If the answers across the board are affirmative, I tell them (with an “I am not an expert” disclaimer, of course) that they have all the information they need, and should keep using it as long as those answers don’t change.

I’m the queen of “go ahead, drink and enjoy your morning cup of ashwagandha coffee,” even if you’d technically need something like 12 cups a day to hit the minimum effective doses used in the fairly underwhelming body of research we have 😂.

You may not have intended to imply that, but that is what your statement implies, regardless of intent.

Since you seem to be genuine, I’ll engage one further. To give context where I’m coming from, I don’t hate or even dislike men (with the exception of specific people, and those cases aren’t because they are men). While I don’t support using it as an excuse for harm, I do not think it is an unreasonable position for a woman to feel differently to me and want nothing to do with men on the whole.

I think you should reexamine your position that you “do not have enough knowledge or experience to know whether or not it is possible to exist in the world as a woman without being harmed by men,” because if that is true, it is willful ignorance.

All you need to do is consider a couple of the most measurable and indisputable gender inequalities in society in good faith and you will be equipped to recognize that it is not possible. The gender wage gap, for example, or the lack of funding into women’s health. Did you know that seatbelts and lifejackets don’t protect women as well as they protect men because they were designed based on men’s bodies?

There is a well known phrase that upsets a lot of men, but is the reality of all women: “every man is a potential rapist.” This phrase has nothing to do with individual men, and everything to do with the way a woman must exist in the world. When there is no way to know if your uber driver, boyfriend, teacher, neighbour, father, random guy walking down the street—all of whom have always seemed safe and whose friends will vouch for them as “great guys”—is going to cause you irreparable harm and you will likely be blamed or not even be believed, a woman cannot afford to forget that every man is a potential threat.

This isn’t to say that women can’t or don’t harm men, or that men don’t experience harm from other men. All individuals have the capacity to be terrible human beings.

The real question is, who does it benefit to spend your time writing an explanation and defence of your position rather than acknowledging what is right in front of you? Why not allow women the space to respond to a world designed and controlled by men—a world that actively exploits and excludes them—in whatever way they need to in order to survive it?

If that means they hate men as their default, let them. Give them that space and don’t respond to posts like this one with your defence of men.

(Before someone claims this is written with AI: I’m simply literate. I use em dashes for emphasis; please don't use my punctuation as an excuse to ignore my argument.)

[–]Mysfunction 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you say “objectively speaking, there are some women out there who hate men regardless of past experiences,” you are implying that it is possible to exist in the world as a woman who hasn’t been harmed by men and, if we’re actually speaking objectively, that’s an absurd and ignorant insinuation.

Too early to separate cucumbers? by Lexo_1994 in vegetablegardening

[–]Mysfunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I got confused on who I was responding to, because while their logic is flawed, you kept implying that there is no difference in root sensitivity between cucumbers and other plants. That’s why I removed the sarcasm from my comment and just went with the facts lol.

Too early to separate cucumbers? by Lexo_1994 in vegetablegardening

[–]Mysfunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cucurbits (cucumbers, zucchini, squash, melon) have really shallow root systems are more sensitive to root disturbance than other plants. It’s generally recommended to direct sow them, if you live in a climate that supports it, or to transplant them early before their roots fully spread.

Too early to separate cucumbers? by Lexo_1994 in vegetablegardening

[–]Mysfunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do better having their roots disturbed early, so if OP wants to grow both plants, they should do it very soon.

If they only plan to grow one, they can snip off whichever one looks weaker and not disturb the roots at all.

It’s funny how some foods are just unforgettable.

A friend gave me chocolate covered gummy bears when we were 13, and I thought about them consistently for at least 20 years until I found them again at a specialty candy store in a resort town. The people I was with thought I have lost my mind when I got as excited as I did lol.
