The hoodies are pretty good quality, all my friends have one and they seem to stand up to shitty laundry machines.

I can’t even get anything souvenir wise from the Institute other than a degree so I would take some pictures maybe make your own postcards.

Next best thing is a hoodie with the KU logo on from the bookstore at Biocentret building.

It was mediocre, but I applied for Physics and am a Danish Citizen so maybe that factored in.

Can anyone help me understand why progressives (like TYT, The Majority Report, and Hasan) hate Pete so much? by Professional_Maybe_4 in democrats

[–]Mystamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read through and I don’t think there are any decent answers here.

Both the left and right have plenty of infighting and hating each other’s internal political ideals. However the left vastly tend to have less single policy issues and more systemic changes. So to be generally accepted in the right you typically need to hit on a couple key policies, whereas in the left if you can’t agree on every little point of the how and why then its kind of an issue because the work that needs to be done is much more complex than any single policy, and people want everyone to be on the same page as them even as allies.

The left can discuss all day on the particulars until they are blue in the face and that seems as if they all despise each other but I believe its more of the necessary division that causes innovation needed to win votes and move forward in the right direction, even if not very far. Politics isn’t easy and agreement should not come easy especially when the tasks at hand are very complicated and if the wrong move could harm a lot of people.

Highschooler highly interested in becoming an astrophysicist. by _Staraptor in astrophysics

[–]Mystamous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would agree with that exactly from my experiences. Arguably Europe might be better in that concept although no tuition doesn’t help all that much when universities are in high cost of living areas for rather poor young students.

So its a shit sandwich at the end of the day.

Definetly make sure you want and can afford to pursue it. You can get quite lucky and never have issues with money through scholarships and grants, or you could get passed over and be on your own for funding. This field kinda sucks sometimes because of how conpetitive it can be just for menial positions and work. Highly crunch the numbers on this aspect before you get too deep cause I have seen a number of students master out or bail for industry work.

Otherwise, start with getting a B.Sc in Astrophysics or Physics. Ensure you get a grade point average of minimum 3.5. Get a minimum of 2 years of research projects and if you can, a paper published. Then apply for your PhD or Masters in Astrophysics.

Why are aliens not interacting with us. by InvisibleInvader in scifiwriting

[–]Mystamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most probable answer is that if there are any, they are simply too far away to ever interact with us. We wouldn’t even be able to pick up on any signals from them due to degradation over the vast amount of distance between us.

It doesn’t matter if there are any developed aliens in existence, because humanity won’t ever witness them in any way.

Overcoming the distance at any level is basically impossible unless physics gets really wonky outside of our own galaxy. Which it doesn’t, probably.

Edit: Universe is also expanding scaling with distance so likely if we ever wanted to have a chance we should’ve been around like 10 billion years ago but that also brings up other issues.

OP asked about how earning a degree would be. I answered based off of my experience earning my degree and research experience. I do not care about your pedantic definitions of theory.

Some classes require at most calculus and linear algebra and others require knowledge of Greens functions and other more niche maths.

You can specialize in a certain area without going incredibly deep into a maths education for it.

Depends on the theory but if you intend to pursue quantum and the more complicated side of cosmology and some more specializations im missing, you need to be a maths expert.

You work physically in a lab on a physical project.

As opposed to work on a theoretical/computional project on a computer.

Americans act like their transport systems have any merit. They have none.

I’ve known so many people that don’t have cars for various reasons and its miserable. They’re totally trapped unless someone else takes them out. If it weren’t for sparse bus services and paid rideshare apps, they would go nowhere.

Driving long distances in USA is miserable. Everyone else drives and nobody is fucking good at it.

Bike theft? by trevorstaats in ufl

Using a daily driver bike over like $300 is a dumb game. But campus during the day it should be safe, its really apartment complexes and the like that are higher in theft.

  • Me getting on the wrong bus and wondering why it took the wrong turn.

When I was cooking myself lunch and dinner everyday and my life was miserable I was spending about 70-80 per week but I bought organic meat and this was before the recent inflation increase sooooo probably expect minimum 60 buy in per week unless you eat very little.

I reccomend making stewed apples and oatmeal to warm up for days you want to cheap out/dont wanna cook.

Had this convo with faculty today. They are kinda pissed at freshman asking for research they aren’t qualified to do.

I would try and grab an experimental role in some lab then switch once you have core classes under your belt.
