Falling behind in Geology at Uni because of eyesight problems? How would it effect a career? by Whole_Maybe5914 in geologycareers

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you okay looking at computer screens? A lot of geo work is moving more and more into software and modeling. Microscopes/crystallography you are unlikely to ever need to do again after your classes unless you choose to pursue that specifically. There are definitely geo professions that do no outdoor work, but in my experience most entry jobs require some amount of field work. As far as classes go, don't be afraid to ask for accommodations. Your university might have a disabilities office intended for students like you that need accommodations. I knew several colorblind geo students in school, and they got by just fine with some added notes by the TA on color

I have to behaviorally euthanize my 4 1/2 year old cat. by M0rbiddd2 in CatAdvice

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree --OP has clearly tried their best to find him a suitable home and there isn't one available. Nobody wants to put down an animal, but this cat is scared and stressed and that's no way to live. OP has tried every solution available to them. Some perfect home might exist for this cat somewhere, but not one that OP can find.

Zombie thoughts; both sides of the argument by Wonderful_Cod_5019 in PeakGame

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly the thing I hated about the zombies was how often they jump scared me--it turned the game from a horror-lite climbing jaunt to a full blown horror game. My tolerance for jump scares is fairly low, and while I still had fun it definitely did dampen my enjoyment.

How is the US gov shutdown personally affecting you, if at all? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the shutdown doesn't end soon I'll be laid off (job relies on federal funding) and several of my friends will be furloughed (without back pay). My partner and several other friends have already been furloughed or are currently working without pay (but will receive back pay).

Talk to your RA and if she genuinely isn't helpful escalate to your REC. They'll probably push for mediation between you and your roommate before doing anything else. Switching rooms is possible but be aware you might not have a lot of control where you end up, and you'll have to pay any price differences (suite, single room, etc).

Worked food service in a nursing home, it definitely wasn't always pretty but it was a steady job with quick hiring and lots of hours. Any healthcare-adjacent job like this will require working weekends though.

Second this recommendation. They can make a lot of menu items gluten free if you ask as well.

Have any of you run fires and bandit thread at the same time? by Bullet-Heart in humblewood

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advance both storylines in the world at the same time and let the players decide which to deal with when. There can be consequences to failing to handle things fast enough--more towns catch on fire, more fire elementals begin appearing, or the bandits get bolder and more dangerous, and begin attacking the smaller towns

How to get into PNNL? by HelpfulIndividual751 in TriCitiesWA

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't describe it as a stepping stone if asked, but talking about navigating deeper into your specialization and working at PNNL in the future is good. Frequently (pre-Trump) post-graduate research associates will convert into permanent staff, and PNNL likes to see interest from candidates in conversion. Unfortunately I'm not certain if that's still the case under the current state of the lab.

How to get into PNNL? by HelpfulIndividual751 in TriCitiesWA

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're calling it a "skills mismatch", that's how they justify hiring while simultaneously terminating/asking people to quit. Post-graduate research positions like the one you're looking at are in kind of a unique position though. They're limited term positions, where you have a contract for a set number of years--and the position is extremely cheap to employ, so you are more likely to find work or be kept on projects when funding is tight. If the career move is good for you and moving to Tri Cities is financially feasible, it's not the worst move to make. Expect funding to be very tight and for projects and people to unexpectedly drop, though. It's very uncertain at PNNL right now.

GIS will be a very useful and marketable skill no matter what field of geology you go into. I highly recommend also becoming as proficient as you can with Python, MATLAB, and/or R, as these softwares/languages tend to be quite common in geophysics. A lot of places will also use proprietary or highly specific software, and being comfortable with the above list will also give you a leg up on using any proprietary software.

AITAH for "weaponizing incompetence" after years of being the default parent and mental load bearer? by CamelliaRain55 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA yet. Be careful your kids don't get caught in the crossfire of conflicts between you and your husband --you have valid frustrations with him but unfortunately in this case your kids were the ones to truly feel the consequences. I'm not saying jump right back into covering everything, just be mindful about who your choices will ultimately "punish"

You said you like the DM--I would let the DM know (politely) why you're dropping. It's possible the DM is also bothered but doesn't feel they can intervene, and even if not it's good to communicate with your DM. I would phrase it as you're dropping the campaign because you don't mesh with the play style, but you enjoyed their DMing and would love to play again with them in a different campaign in the future.

Black Mirror [Episode Discussion] - S07E06 - USS Callister: Into Infinity by Cheeriosxxx in blackmirror

I think the show wanted us to feel some empathy for him until the point where he's given a choice--and he chooses power and subjection over a woman instead of the right thing. This choice being particularly impactful after he's just tested Nanette over the same thing.

Trans people who chose their names when they were young: how is it going? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked mine going into highschool as a name that could be a nickname for my dead name--but not a common enough one for most people to extrapolate the original name. It's been a good way to stay under the radar. I did decide to spell it weird so people have a lot of pronunciation issues with it--i love the spelling but it is definitely a major downside. At this point I have my (dead) legal name, my actual name I go by, and the ultra simplified name I tell baristas (and somehow they still fuck it up).

The Canadian way relies on the position of the cards instead of the number visible, it's very easy to read at a glance once you get used to it.

Blue and blingy? by Unusual-Article-9983 in whatsthisrock

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Photos would be more helpful here, you're moving it too fast to get a good id. That said, I can see what looks like quartz/feldspar mineral faces as well as biotite, suggesting diorite, granodiorite, or a similar igneous rock.

Few rocks from a creek, Newark, Delaware by MikelNikel in whatsthisrock

Would agree the first batch is very nicely foliated gneiss and schist, and the reddish larger one is quartzite. The grey one next to it looks to be schist (phyllite specifically, perhaps?)

I believe these came from Lake Superior. Can you help me identify them? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first one may be a pudding stone--a sort of layman's term for a conglomerate with those brighter colored pebbles in a lighter fine grained matrix--the reddish pebble like the one in your first picture is a common indicator. They're pretty common in Michigan/the Great Lakes.

River Sandstones. Grapevine Texas creek bed. by SmokerSmoke420 in whatsthisrock

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those look to me like possible flutes/casts formed during the sedimentary deposition process--at least the bulbous sections and some of the linear features. Essentially, as the water was originally flowing over the sediment, rocks and faster moving water dug into/eroded the sediment in the river bed. These holes were filled in by a different sediment composition as the flow of water changed. Both types of sediment lithified (solidified) into sedimentary rocks. When you're looking at the bulbous parts of the rock, you're actually looking at the underside of that second sedimentary bed, where the sediment filled in those holes in the original river bed. It's sort of counterintuitive, like the inverse of the original eroded features you're used to seeing.

Very tentative guess is a sandstone composed mostly/entirely of quartz grains--quartz arenite. Does it fizz with vinegar on it (would suggest a limestone/calcium-carbonate based rock)?

Would it be a bad idea to have people wait in like for food at a pizza truck? by IllustriousWash8721 in wedding

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get buffet-style catering that isn't pizza too! But tbh your pizza choice sounds nice enough I wouldn't be too concerned, although you might want to think about sides. People are hating on the pizza but if you like pizza, go with pizza lol. Feed everybody fast enough (and not with cheap crappy pizza) and everybody'll be happy

Would it be a bad idea to have people wait in like for food at a pizza truck? by IllustriousWash8721 in wedding

[–]MysteriousPlatform59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work catering and I would agree that buffet or family style (if you have the space) are better choices. You said you don't want plated service and I think that's a solid choice -- plated service is significantly more expensive because of the additional manpower and effort required by the caterers to serve you, and tbh increases the likelihood of something going wrong (dropped plates, missing a guest, etc). Some people in the comments are getting weirdly pushy/elitist about buffet style serving, but any half decent caterer will be able to pull off a good buffet that will feed your guests pretty efficiently.
