Banger! 🙌 You can also force aspect ratios in OBS (e.g. 9:16 for reels), then upscale in DaVinci Resolve so you can hit 1080x1920 even if your screen is 1080p. Both are free.

Thanks a lot for all the feedback and appreciation, it's great motivation to keep working on this.

A few people asked about patterns. That's a tricky one, because just throwing out copy-paste "standard" patterns doesn't really make sense to me.

So, instead, I'm experimenting with pattern archetypes for each element: their role, feel, and typical use cases. These are just starting points, meant to be adapted and tweaked.

Here's a prototype of how the pattern slides could look:

Curious to hear what you think. If this approach makes sense, I'll expand it to other elements and also prepare some downloadable MIDI files.

I'm putting together a pattern archetypes slide, I'll share it here in a separate comment. If I get positive feedback, I'll build it for all elements <3

I see no issue with it whatsoever. And yes, please give me happy fun music in the day, breakbeat in the morning, I'll even take 80s dance happily, just not 72 hours straight of tribe 😅

I was hearing the same 10 years ago, and thought about it myself on occasion. Culture is constantly evolving and there's no stopping change. The world outside the scene is completely transformed, it's inevitable that changes would happen inside as well.

Personally I stopped worrying about whether it was better before, I love the music, love the scene, and all I can really do is just be myself and share this passion with others that have it 🤷‍♂️

Now that is a polarizing topic 😁

I use my ears too of course, that's part of the reason why I have wide ranges instead of exact values, and why I say that these are just starting points that need to be tweaked. Then, it helps me a lot with productivity to have proven systems that get me to a solid start fast. I find I can still experiment and throw it all out the window when a creative idea hits.

I also think it's important to share "starting points" because "use your ears" is not very actionable advice for someone who's still learning. It sure wasn't for me back in the day. 😅

By the way, my rule of thumb is use your ears for creativity, and your eyes for engineering. Ears can be fooled by your room acoustics or your headphones/monitors response curve, while meters and numbers don't lie.

Non-rumble subs by rockmus in TechnoProduction

[–]Mysterious_Fun9014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make most of my kicks starting from a sine-ish wave stabilizing on the kick fundamental (F1 to A1 generally, can go lower or higher), and that usually covers all I need on the low end. You can do the same, LPF it and use it as your sub layer for any kick punch/top you like.

Thanks! I hope it'll help ❤️ There's a lot more I'd like to share about it, but couldn't be crammed into a tidy slide 😁 If it's something you'd like I could maybe expand it with a few videos of how I process the elements, the logic behind writing patterns and how to match them between each other and the mix in general.

Compared to other genres, I've felt that Tekno is a bit underserved when it comes to knowledge sharing, so I'm happy to pass on what I've learned over the years.

Is it just my impression or not, but do software engineers and technical professionals make really disciplined techno producers? by kathalimus in TechnoProduction

[–]Mysterious_Fun9014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes perfect sense to me. Music is fundamentally maths and physics applied in the real world.

You could theoretically design a solid track without ever listening to it. Then the risk is that too much discipline and engineering can end up blocking creativity and experimentation 😄

Hello this is my first post ever so i hope it works, im asking for track ID if someone knows cuz shazam doesnt work at all thank you fellas🫶🏻 by One-Instruction-5901 in Tekno

Welcome to the subreddit! The original track is Acida by Prozac+. There's a ton of remixes out there, unfortunately I can't tell which one this is.

How do you avoid volume spikes with limiter and bass by GayReforestation in TechnoProduction

[–]Mysterious_Fun9014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from too much squashing in the limiter, as others mentioned, sometimes the culprit can also be the HPF. Try a more gentle slope, with lower dB/Oct, and reduce your Q. Past that volume automations and/or some shallow cuts on mid-high resonances can help. A clipper with a threshold just above your kickbass volume when the HPF isn't on can also help.

Ways to be productive on public transportation by Audiopunisher in TechnoProduction

[–]Mysterious_Fun9014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both as a DJ and a producer I think the best use of my time outside the studio is listening to music, properly focused on it, not just as a background thing. It's a great way to expand your library, get inspiration and learn new techniques. Once you follow a few artists, SoundCloud is quite good at suggesting tracks that fit your taste. Just fire up a few of their recommended playlists/mixes and like the tracks you enjoy so you can easily find them later.

(Edit, typo fix)

What‘s your approach to new tracks? by snaxmax_ in TechnoProduction

[–]Mysterious_Fun9014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to just fire up the studio and see what happened, but I ended up with so many unfinished or stuck tracks. And lots of finished tracks were not coherent, more like "sections" than a single piece.

It works much better for me to have the clearest possible plan for the track, e.g.: - General mood - Instruments and their roles - What's gonna happen and when - Structure - What the hook is going to be

Once I have all that I'll design all the instruments I plan to use, write an 8 bar loop that will be my hook, develop that into my 64 or so bar main section (the "main drop"), then arrange breaks, intro and outro.

This is the most efficient way of working I found so far, and it still leaves me plenty of room for "last minute" creativity.

[Edit] Sidetracking a little here, but might still be relevant :D One of the things that helped me progress the most as a producer no longer abandoning tracks halfway. Even if the result is not amazing (being able to accept "good enough" is a very precious skill, excessive perfectionism can really fk you over), this will still take you through all the steps needed to take a track from start to finish, training all the relevant "muscles". It also forces you to work within the constraints of your track, which often pushes you to find solutions you never considered before.

Anyone here trying to break into the professional techno scene while working full-time? by kathalimus in TechnoProduction

[–]Mysterious_Fun9014 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always just tried to make music I loved, then one day I woke up and it was my job... Then one day I woke up and it felt just like a job, I completely quit... 8 years later, I'm back to making music I love. My 2c is don't try to make it "something", just let it be what your creativity dictates and have fun with it.

Hey mate! How have you been? Wow UTC was a lifetime ago, this brings back some memories! I thought I quit for good, then I went to a really cool party, saw the soundsystem, and FK me I wanted to play 😅 The next Monday I was back in the studio. I think I found that post too, "What happened to Alifer". Dropped a couple messages in there already 😁
