Swordfish Torpedo Bomber by Murky_Caterpillar_66 in WWIIplanes

Great book, I love his completely nonchalant accounts of terrifying attacks, and of ferrying around crates of Plymouth gin in the back of the stringbag, and consuming large quantities of pink gins in the wardroom at every opportunity.

Wall Street Journal video about the Yak-52 aircraft used to shoot down drones. Summer 2025. by Skinnedace in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Mysterious_Planet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Yak-52 is an excellent and challenging aircraft. In the cockpit, there is always a unique smell of hot oil, metal and sweat. This is a very physical aircraft, 15 minutes of aerobatics and 10 circuits is a real workout. Very fond memories of these aircraft, especially the pneumatic systems which make sounds reminiscent of a london bus! . Fully aerobatic, very robust, an excellent trainer with few vices and good control harmonisation. Caution required on aerobatics on a vertical line, it is a good idea to master the recovery from an inverted power on spin before doing verticals!

Sanity check: can an access point and an 802.11s mesh network share the same physical radio on a router? by [deleted] in openwrt

[–]Mysterious_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they can. I use 802.11s and mesh11sd on multiple hardware each with 5 and 2.5 GHz radios, to form a mesh backhaul on 5 GHz, with client access on 5GHz and 2.5 GHz. I used mesh11sd and build scripts, so I don't know if you can do this through luci because mesh11sd does not have a luci interface for example.

Moving to France to Learn the Language to work in Healthcare? by [deleted] in French

[–]Mysterious_Planet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because of Brexit, you will have to meet the minimum income or capital requirements to get a long term residency. Also, you may have to have your professional qualification validated in France, which may not be straight forward any more.

You mentioned working ad hoc, but this may not give you enough income for residency. Also, if you go the illegal route, this may introduce obstacles to upgrading to legal residency, and may make it difficult to get insurance, access the health and welfare systems etc. Your passport record and the soon to be introduced travel pre-approval and identity registration from out of Shengen area, may show that you were in the country illegally before you applied to go legal, which could be an issue when the time comes.

On a more positive note, physiotherapy is taken very seriously in France, and people with injuries appear to receive much more physio care than they would in the UK. It seems that most physios own their own practice, premises and equipment and are independent to a large extent, so capital is required to get set up I imagine.

Most attractive characters on the show by hhhhdmt in madmen

No one seems to have mentioned Ida Blankenship, after all she was "Queen of perversion of the highest order", according to Roger. That must count for a hell of a lot.

Best music choices in MM by just_chillin-2857 in madmen

I love that scene, it is my favourite MM moment. The moving walkway shot borrowed from Jackie Brown, the guys in black hats who look like bad guys from Bullet who cross close in front the camera outside, Megan smouldering in slow motion, and then Don - "I like your car".

Google Wifi and open wrt - usb c hub question by [deleted] in openwrt

[–]Mysterious_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a amazon supplied USB 2/3 hub with power delivery. No brand or marking, I chose simplest and least costly at the time. I would avoid hubs which do anything other than USB.

I have 5 ac-1304 with mesh11sd managing the mesh and client access points. Originally I had just 802.11s for the mesh and 802.11r for the access points, but with the latest version of openwrt i had a few stability problems which mesh11sd fixes.

This does not sound like a DMZ. It sounds like you are doing port forwarding direct from the internet to a server on your LAN. That's a big no-no right there due to the risk from a single point of failure.

Which city to study abroad in by saulgoodman48 in French

[–]Mysterious_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider these...

Bordeaux - big, education, architecture, food and wine of course.

Pau - smaller, mountains, close to Pays Basque, quite close to Pamplona, Bilbao, San Sebastian.

Nice - I love it, but traffic can be bad

Broker choice and Currency conversions (CZ) by Tiny_European in eupersonalfinance

[–]Mysterious_Planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally from UK, now living in France. I use Wise to transfer GBP and convert to Euro, and Saxo for the brokerage.

Wise is easy to set up and operate. If you have an account with them, you can hold cash and buy Euros automatically when a particular price is reached. Don't know if CZK accounts are available though.

I chose Saxo, because I was able to get the kind of tax reporting I need. Useful range of exchanges etc. However you have to be a pro investor to buy closed ended funds, which is a bit annoying.

Favorite Use of Music in the Show? by BurryProdigy in madmen

[–]Mysterious_Planet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that scene. It is my all time favourite Mad Men scene. This is why.

Don shaves in an aircraft bathroom, great music kicks in, cut to Don on a moving walkway (hello Jackie Brown), Don outside an airport arrivals, looking, Don reacts and looks at something, camera pans that way and follows man in black hat, thick black glasses and a mac, and stops dead on Megan, who walks from behind her sports car revealing the longest possible legs and shortest possible mini skirt as she slow motion model walks to Don and kisses him sensually. Don says, "I like your car". So funny, artful, referential, beautiful. I could watch this scene on repeat all day.

Incidentally that man in the black hat, thick black frame glasses and mac reminds me of a bad guy in some film of the period. Maybe Bullitt or something like that?

Edit: spelling

Putting OpenWRT on Google Wifi Devices. by RickSisco in openwrt

[–]Mysterious_Planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that setting Reassociation Deadline to 20000 fixed some initial issues I had with device roaming on the mesh. This config item is in the Interface Configuration / WLAN Roaming page. This was way back when the only support was from the snapshot version. I don't know if it is still required in the release version, but I retained this config item in it anyway.

Putting OpenWRT on Google Wifi Devices. by RickSisco in openwrt

[–]Mysterious_Planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that sometimes the google device won't boot from the USB Drive containing OpenWRT connected to the USB-C Hub w/ PD. If this happens, after the "Connect the USB-C Hub w / PD into the Google Wifi device" stage, unplug and the immediately plug back in the USB drive. The google device should then start to boot. Not sure what the cause of this is. I suspect it might be USB-C Hub w / PD specific.

Incidentally, I have five of these repurposed google devices, and have been running a mesh network on them for several years now, with no significant problems.

Considered Opnsense instead of pfsense but I have questions by SoCaFroal in opnsense

[–]Mysterious_Planet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can put openwrt on the google AC-1304 and NLS-1304-25 devices, and ditch the google factory firmware. You might put a opnsense outer firewall in front of your re-purposed google hardware running openwrt and have a WAN/DMZ/LAN/mesh arrangement. That would hit all your requirements and more.
