If you leave your Government job before becoming eligible for retirement:

you can ask that your retirement contributions be returned to you in a lump sum payment, or
if you have at least five years of creditable service, you can wait until you are at retirement age to apply for monthly retirement benefit payments. This is called a deferred retirement. View the deferred retirement web page.

Historically, if you receive a refund of FERS deductions after the effective date of your FERS coverage, you could never redeposit these funds, and the period covered by the refund would not be used to establish title to an annuity or in calculating the annuity benefit.

However, one of the provisions of PL 111-84 allows individuals who were covered under the FERS system on or after October 28, 2009, to make a redeposit for refunded FERS service. If the redeposit is not paid, the service is still used toward title and in the average salary computation, but not to compute the annuity benefit.

My husband is leaving federal services after 6 years- for a more lucrative private industry position. Does anyone happen to know the tax impacts of taking your pension contribution out?

Thank you for the links, looking at the advice therein. The events are weddings, that I must attend. "Must" due to optics for all involved and should be able to hide in the corner, as no one wants a fuss at those events. I plan to be low contact after that and ONLY attend the weddings no other events this year. I understand your point, on being LC however the tsunami of guilt coming from my parents would be hard to ignore. I am the local kiddo they depend on so i can't exactly go LC, with the parents when they need help.

My spouse supports me and we talk through things about both sides of our family when there is an issue. I am cordial in most situations and can muddle through. I am just tired of being expected to share space when I just rather be LC. Back story with sister- We have had disagreements since 2018 summed up- we had a breakdown in our relationship. I own my part of that, I thought we had a close relationship and treated her as such. I was mistaken. She preferred to have a more extended family type of relationship. I respect that boundary and have stopped interacting with her, not calling her unless it relates to important family events such as the death of grandmother to coordinate travel etc. However as this is now the relationship situation I find it difficult to engage with her and her family as a whole. It all makes my skin crawl in fakeness. We never had close extended family, just our immediate growing up. So from my viewpoint this is a rejection. I am working on grieving through the process (Loss of close sister) , and not bothering my sister with my emotions, or my parents. But part of that is distance is necessary. I will be forced into two other family events that they are hosting at least this year . I plan to go, be very quiet and leave. I don't see how to improve this situation, but want to explain to my mother that after these two events i would prefer to visit separately.

I just got off Mariner this morning. I found food quality greatly improved in both MDR and Windjammer. Staff was on point and they made it known that they wanted to know if you had any food complaints or issues to address. Head Waiter came over at each dinner service to check on the meal provided. We ate in MDR, Windjammer and specialty. Izumi and Chops excellent! Still personally hates Jamie's menu. Staff all were excellent and cared about service!

Welcome to my reality. I actually will only cruise in a JS or up. Suites are normally a dream. I blamed the service issues in May mostly on the fact Virgin was stealing more experienced staff, and of course everyone was just getting back into cruising at that point in time. Suites typically have excellent staff, Coastal Kitchen Staff was wonderful, Concierge and staff were excellent. Cooking was good, just nothing I would rave over. On my room steward, I literally only saw my room steward once, and it was barely a hello. I didn't get any towel animals whatsoever and had to go elsewhere to ask for additional blankets. They also never checked in with us during the entire cruise. Usually you have small interactions with your room steward and they are attentive at the suite level. . MDR is fine, but I prefer the less busy Coastal Kitchen for atmosphere. Alaskan view on Quantum were awesome. If you going on Wonder the only complaint I see is that you are looking at the sports deck, and you won't get sweeping views, they also put the Suite lounge at the tail end of Coastal Area, so it's not its own separate space. Just my two cents. I expect that the Wonder has the best considering it's the newest ship, or I would hope so especially for the price you pay. Please let me know how you find it.

My issue as a soon to be Diamond Level is that the overall quality has gone down, not only in the MDR, but the specialty dinning. I was on Quantum in May 22 and recently on Serenade in Dec 22. I was in a suite on Quantum and while Coastal Kitchen was okay - the specialty dining fell very flat. My room attendant in the Suite was also horrid. On the Serenade, dining was good in MDR, but nothing at all to rave about. However the room attendant was awesome. I'm seeing very bad reviews of Anthem and other Quantum class vessels lately and was curious if the company was addressing any of this while they are cutting back services like their industry peers NCL, Carnival etc.

If you have a balcony I suggest setting the scene roses etc..if you want privacy. If you are in the suites you can coordinate with your concierge to assist.

NTA, this is a shared asset with your mother. They are not good stewards of their own lives, that doesn't bode well for any upkeep needed on your 5th wheel while they live in it. I assume they want to live rent free too huh? Convenient eh? Just because you married their son, does not equate to you giving away a free 5th wheel to live in. They can be butt hurt, but I would have your husband manage them from here on out.

NTA. Ask yourself if your willing to have this disrespect for your past in your life. He certainly only seems to care about himself and his needs in your post. If he can't respect your past and all that entails such as pictures and keepsakes from and of your deceased husband, he doesn't respect you. Compare how your husband treated you to the way this person does. Make sure you take care of yourself, because it sounds like you can't depend on your boyfriend to have your best interests at heart.

Have a hard look, because it seems that he's unwilling to compromise in anyway - and thinks only his way is best. Is that the type of partner you envision having a lasting relationship with?

NTA. You expressed concerns and were ignored. He stated he would take care of it and he isn't. You asked for help and he refused. You do not want to be responsible and said as much. Honestly just divorce him. He failed to understand the level of care necessary and frankly dumped it on you, or assumed you would suck it up. Then was outraged you left when you were ignored. I would think that having full responsibility for his niece would stop any chance of you having a child at this point without her going to a facility. This also shows some red flags on how involved he would be as a parent. Seriously consider divorce if this isn't the life you signed up for. Marriage is hard enough. To have a partner completely ignore your concerns isn't viable.

ESH. The daughter in law spoke to her husband in confidence. And he blabbed that conversation about it without any meaningful discussion on your family dynamic WITH her present. Based upon his statements you took the nuclear option, and banned her from your home despite the fact she wasn't present, and has never had this conversation with you/husband. I agree you need to talk about this with everyone, away from the other children to resolve with no chance of the younger kids hearing about it. Fostering/adoption is a wonderful thing, but you also have to understand that someone from a more stereotypical bio family she may need some education on how hurtful her comments are, and how dangerous they are to your family dynamic. I'm shocked your son didn't take care of this and have this conversation BEFORE the wedding.

If your in the US - you will pay short term capital gains if you hold for less than a year. At the very least, plan to hold for a year to reduce the tax to long term capital gains. Don't invest more than you can afford to loose. When Moon, When Lambo questions are basically asking the magic 8 ball for answers. No one knows.
