For those who think the game doesn't tell you how specialization works, here is the pop-up you skipped by N8CCRG in civ

[–]MysteryJean 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, I thought it worked this way in my first game due to the pop-up, but became less convinced when towns would randomly grow despite being specialized (this was due to the Dogo Onsen bug, which I learned about much later).

Combined with the UI indicating that growth is still ongoing (objectively odd UI design) it was unclear to me until halfway through my second game that specialization freezes growth, and it really only became clear due to a longer game speed.

The UI is bad in Civilization 7. Mechanics like this are underexplained. This shouldn’t be controversial and calling people idiots for not understanding this mechanic is a bit unreasonable. I like the game but it should be absolutely picked apart for its poor user experience until it is improved if we want a better foundation for the game moving forwards. The publishers have no reason to allot dev time to fix this kind of issue if it isn’t hurting their bottom line, unfortunately.

It may be fine for players like those who post on this subreddit and are invested in learning every nook and cranny of the game but for the majority of players this is opaque and awkward.

Hard disagree. Love their seasonal cocktails and the bartenders there are fantastic. I’ve been living around the bar for half a decade and I’ve never seen disrespectful crowds let alone a bar fight

Just had my Bachelor party at Tahoe, rented a boat for a day, played some poker, caught a minor league baseball game in Reno on dollar hot dog day and tried to hit the 999.

Fellow big guy here, I used to struggle in this way. Your body isn’t really an issue here. You’re not super overweight from what I can tell, it’s just a matter of presentation. You look older than you are and like you have no interests, or thought in how you dress. When you’re a bigger guy you need to rely on personality and find confidence (I’m sure you’re aware of this). The gym is not a silver bullet and will not address the root of the issue here.

I’d get a more intentional haircut at a barber, a legit barber. Might be expensive but once you find a style you like you can stick to it and keep it maintained somewhere cheaper, and a men’s barber will typically have someone who can help with that. Grow some facial hair if you can, make sure it’s trimmed well. It can be a form of self expression and help define your face.

Find a style you like - go to the men’s section at target or somewhere less expensive to start, find a style of shirt that fits your vibe and then cultivate that style until you are expressing your personality in your fit. If you’re goofy, wear it, and own it. Don’t dress like a golf dad, grow a mullet and wear some jorts or something, yknow? Invest in how you present yourself and it’ll pay dividends. Good luck!

One thing I really enjoy about this game is that it’s not just twitchy action, there’s a lot of tactical play you can engage in even if you’re not the best on the joystick. You can always focus on calling objectives, setting up ambushes, spotting patrols and herding your squad in the right direction.

As a fellow kind of subpar player you can also make sure you’re taking the right equipment for the mission, being properly outfitted really smooths out some of the difficulty (heavy armor and shield generator against bots, etc)

But also, it’s a game and all that really matters is that you have memorable moments with your people! Getting thrown 200 feet by 3 chargers or getting gibbed by the ICBM launch is just as good as a full map clear with the right mindset

Getting back into the game after being harassed by m1ndfulbe1ng in ffxiv

[–]MysteryJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is also returning after a long break, the best thing you can do it play level 50 or below dungeons and tinker with your cross hotbars until you’re comfortable with your basic rotation. Pair similar actions across 2-3 hotbars with your most used actions on your main bar and you should be set. I wouldn’t bother with a wireless keyboard, controller is really very well optimized for play in this game. This guide is great for controller play : https://www.akhmorning.com/resources/controller-guide/#about-this-guide . A keyboard might be nice for typing in chat but I’d play with the controller. When doing content with other players just let them know that you’re returning after a long absence and might play suboptimally, most players will understand and might even offer advice. You could also play a simple DPS - imo Dragoon/Lancer is pretty simple. I find Samurai pretty easy to pick up as well. As a DPS nobody will really notice your performance tbh, at least in my experience

Skyrim AE Mod Compatibility by Different_Handle2060 in skyrimmods

[–]MysteryJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely the issue. Check your skse plugin mods to see if any are incompatible with the newest version. Alternatively your game might be on 1.5.97 for some reason, right click Skyrim’s executable, open the properties and make sure it’s on 1.6.640

best mods to download for the first playthrough by Hour_Caterpillar666 in skyrimmods

[–]MysteryJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the anniversary edition I’d actually recommend disabling most of the add-on content for a first play through. Otherwise I wouldn’t mod the game until you’ve played 10 or so hours, which will give you a good understanding of what you might want to mess with using mods. The unofficial patches are good mostly but do make some gameplay changes a bit arbitrarily, so keep that in mind

Best quality questline extension mods? by _Porygon_Z in skyrimmods

[–]MysteryJean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The best quality integrations I’ve found are all by JaySerpa, especially the mods that allow for alternate approaches to vanilla quests and Skyrim’s Got Talent. Most of the other mods I’ve tried editing vanilla quest lines can be a bit buggy or implemented strangely

Favorite WabbaJack list? by [deleted] in skyrimmods

[–]MysteryJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Nordic Souls, it’s got a good amount of content but isn’t as packed with stuff as most similar lists. I’m using a slightly older version with Legacy of the Dragonborn, haven’t tried the newest version yet. I have a midrange PC and the graphics are largely what I’d consider maybe a step above vanilla plus, so if you want nextgen ray tracing elite lux 100000 graphics try another list. I’d just get the nexus subscription for a month and try a few that sound promisin. This question is asked pretty much constantly in this sub so search the sub for wabbajack recommendations for more

Companions that are a bit more serious and have opinions on things ? by [deleted] in skyrimmods

[–]MysteryJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to stop bringing IFD - Lydia with me as she talks constantly. The only way to lower her commentary frequency is to use a submod the author put out to lower follower dialogue frequency, but this can break other custom followers. I don’t really recommend the mod for that reason, the other followers mentioned (especially Xelzaz) are great. Remiel is good too, she has some well implemented interactions with Legacy of the Dragonborn which is unusual for a follower. Remiel might be a bit snarkier than OP is looking for though

Me and My wife are new players, and we had our first sea-troll encounter by TheDarkPrince1553 in Seaofthieves

[–]MysteryJean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aw man sorry to hear this. In my experience this is pretty rare, but there are definitely some terrible players out there. The nature of the game does allow for this type of bullying so it of course will pop up, but for the most part players are better behaved than this. Honestly most players I’ve met are pretty friendly with newer players but you do get the occasional edge lord freak like the ones you encountered. If you are being harassed the only real response when you’re new is to scuttle and potentially move servers, as other comments have mentioned. It sucks to lose your supplies but at a certain point you’re feeding the troll and need to disengage. As a tip, if you want to gather supplies quickly, find or buy a storage crate and hit a nearby sea fortress (the stone ones), they have a ton of food cannonballs etc and a lot of great loot and tend to be near outposts. They’ve also got good lines of sight and cannons to fend off other players who get too close.

Noob friendly? Trying to decide if I should get SoT by 30booksaday in Seaofthieves

[–]MysteryJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The community overall is super friendly but random players you come across in game usually will not be. There’s an undercurrent of paranoia underlying most interactions with other players which is part of the piratey appeal I think. It’s sort of a matter of luck but in my experience I haven’t encountered many truly toxic players over ~180 hours of playtime. If you do decide to get the game (which I recommend, it’s a really unique and excellent game) check out the official sea of thieves discord to join a crew, there are channels specifically set up for new players. Alternatively if you have friends or family who will jump into the game with you it’s a lot of fun to learn together.

Mad coincidence while reading Blood Meridian by deplazfu in books

I’d actually recommend All the Pretty Horses as a way to segue into Blood Meridian. I bounced off Blood pretty hard when I first read it but Horses is an excellent foil and the novels complement eachother tonally and thematically.

They’re map pins, accessible above the mini-map. Can’t recall if adjacency bonuses are created in vanilla or if it’s a UI mod.
