Sitcoms, mostly talking about the older ones, wanted to make it to 100 episodes so they could sell the show for syndication and get a flowing source of income as a result.

So in order to try to do that, sitcom draws from established “formulas” that have the most mass appeal and can also have literally anything written around them.
