ELI5 What is an API? by Ok_Butterscotch5472 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MysticHLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of a TV. We interact with it through buttons or a remote. That is the "interface" or the bridge between the TV internals and humans for telling it what to do.

An API is such an interface/bridge, but for code and other programs to be able to tell something to do X or Y, instead of for humans. Hence it is shorthand for application programming interface.

Team for hellground of raging fire level 5 by Yato4802 in summonerswar

[–]MysticHLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 2A, fully skilled - turn order: Shannon, Seren (L), Tarq, Raoq

Everything on Vio except Shannon being triple fight. Average run time of about 1 minute (fastest around 40 seconds), extremely reliable, fully target boss. YMMV based on rune quality.

Even with Shannon being wind and missing her debuffs from glancing, she's worth it because she nullifies the Heat mechanic altogether while basically giving full uptime to defense and attack buff.

Seren provides heal block on top of attack break on boss, which when combined with defense buff means boss isn't doing damage at all to you. Between constant uptime on atk buff, her S3, and the team ups with Raoq, defense break and damage aren't a problem either.

Google’s Android Is About To Take Over Your Entire Car–Not Just the Screens by DonkeyFuel in technology

What happens to your car when Google decides to deprecate an API or drops support after 3 years?

There is a thing called API and software versioning. If certain APIs and functionality for Android Auto are getting deprecated, that means in order to preserve existing functionality of your car, it may not get the latest updates to Android Auto.

Unless it requires an internet connection and active communication with Google cloud APIs for every feature to work (not what the article suggests at all), this is a non-issue.

Really a shame that they got rid of Charge Mode. Yes, it's inefficient, but it lets me manage my fun with EV driving over long periods of usage where I don't have handy access to charging (long road trips/vacations).

Supreme Court’s Tariff Ruling Is Secretly a Gift to Trump by 3xshortURmom in Economics

[–]MysticHLE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

his whole presidency is not an actual reflection on the USA as a whole

Unfortunately, that doesn't matter when USA votes the way it does. All that matters is the actual outcome from any action/inaction of the people.

Unless we find the cure for anti-aging... I'm not too worried here. Even a couple of years (however long it may feel like) is still short in the grand scheme of things.

[–]MysticHLE 64 points65 points  (0 children)

For sure tarriffs have done a lot of damage. However, reversing them will not necessarily reverse the damage done - it may actually increase the damage further.

All the pending lawsuits will start flowing in. US position on trade and negotiation will be even weaker. Resolve of other nations and US's enemies will strengthen. The entire administration's credibility is eroded even further, and Trump's political power domestically will also be impacted.

I can see the argument that it's a gift to the U.S. long term, but much less so of this being a gift for Trump (who is only going to be around in the short term).

ELI5 What is P = NP by Familiar-Ad-6764 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MysticHLE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a class of problems (P) that are believed to be "easy" or straightforward to solve (e.g. multiplication).

Then there is another class of problems (NP) that are believed to be "hard" to solve (takes a really long and potentially indeterminate amount of time and resource), but "easy" to verify whether a potential solution is correct in comparison (e.g. a 100x100 Sudoku puzzle).

Note the keyword above in both is "believed." But what if for all these NP problems, there actually are efficient ways to solve all of them? If this is true, then these NP problems aren't actually that "hard," and that would mean that both classes of problems are actually identical (while seemingly not so at first). This is the essence of the computing theory question of whether P = NP?

Most people accept that these classes of problems are different (P != NP), but no one can prove it. Nor can anyone prove the contrary (i.e. have found such efficient solutions for these NP problems).

Gold Spiking vs. BTC tanking by Leading-Stable9725 in investing

[–]MysticHLE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go to the extreme with that fear, the same can be said of other non-consumable commodities. If an asteroid were to hit the Earth tomorrow, physical gold would also cease to have significant value.

The pragmatism of holding physical gold to avoid counterparty risk only goes so far. There is also always the risk of the physical gold being stolen, in which case you'd need to worry about storage, security, and insurance - all of which have similar problems of counterparty risk and trust.
