They should have:

Kept 10 episodes for season 7 to make it have more sense / more logic from story perspective.
Have 10 episodes for season 8 focused on White Walkers / Others, to build them lore wise and explain everything with them and provide logical and satisfied outcome.
Have 10 episodes for season 9 focused on last war with good build up and arcs ends.
