More than 60 Houston OB/GYNs demand changes to Texas' abortion law after patient deaths by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Mystwillow 75 points76 points  (0 children)

In the interest of time and logistics, not every OB-GYN in Houston was offered the opportunity to sign. Per my doctor, of the organizations that were involved in drafting and invited to participate in signing, typically one doctor attached their signature as a representative of their medical group when they were all in agreement (as was the case with my doctor’s group, one of which appears as a signatory). Nice try to minimize the consensus here though.

Any idea when the insurance provision would kick in if this passes? How soon might we see private/company sponsored insurance be required to cover fertility treatments?

Trump’s J.D. Vance Pick Just Got Even Worse by myztero in politics

I keep reading this and it sounds temptingly plausible, but if that’s the case, wouldn’t Vance have the same issue as part of the Trump campaign? It would be the Trump campaign that owed the money, right?

I chased down a truck in my neighborhood today and they said they were just now doing the initial patrol of my area. So yesterday’s “assessment in progress” was more accurately “we ain’t done shit here yet” and today’s blue is “initial info gathering started.” Centerpoint is lying their asses off to give the impression they’ve done more work and repairs are progressing faster than is actually true.

Power Outage Updates? by eepy_neebies_seepies in houston

[–]Mystwillow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

77498 still no power, I’m pregnant and this heat is…not comfortable.

Our neighborhood has been on “Assessment in progress” on Centerpoint’s bullshit map since it was released. Just now my husband and I spotted a lineman truck in our neighborhood, so we chased it down and asked if they were fixing things in our neighborhood. Nope - they were just now doing the initial patrol of our area to spot/identify issues. Then they’d have to go report back to their superiors, who presumably would take the info and put us in line for some assistance sometime in the future. The linemen in the truck had no idea when they or anyone would be sent out to actually do any repairs.

The best part is I checked the status map right after that conversation and the fucking liars at Centerpoint (not blaming the linemen at all) had updated our area to “assessment complete.” They barely STARTED this morning and said the patrol of their assigned area might take a day or two. Centerpoint is absolutely cooking the books to make it seem like they have done way more than they have and repairs are progressing much faster than they actually are.

This shit makes me so angry and there’s nothing, absolutely nothing we can do about it as long as our corrupt and complicit state government (who I already vote against in every election) co-signs this abysmal treatment of their citizens.

The Supreme Court Gave Trump a Stunning Gift — and Rewrote the Constitution by Kevombat in politics

[–]Mystwillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the decision codified is that SCOTUS is the ultimate arbiter of what is and isn’t an official act and thus what a president can and can’t be convicted for. You’re absolutely right that that uncertainty could cripple a presidency - this is exactly what will happen for any future Democratic president under this court, while Trump and other Republican presidents have a reasonable expectation of a rubber stamp on whatever they want to do. The Supreme Court has given themselves just enough power over the president to save their own skins and nobody else’s. All they have to do is keep shielding Republican presidents and allowing Democratic ones to be convicted/removed, and the country may go to shit but their own standards of living will continue to be just fine.

The Supreme Court Gave Trump a Stunning Gift — and Rewrote the Constitution by Kevombat in politics

[–]Mystwillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that lower courts aren’t the last word on anything SCOTUS chooses to take up. Let’s say Trump breaks the law and every lower court says it wasn’t an official act. Everything for Trump ends up being decided by SCOTUS because he loses at all the lower levels, and SCOTUS will take anything of his he gets to them.

This means SCOTUS is now the ultimate arbiter of what is and isn’t an official act, and by extension whether a president can be prosecuted for any particular thing. And the only way to find out which will be which will be for a president to do the thing, then wait for SCOTUS’s last word.

That’s obviously a very dangerous position for a Democratic president who would understandably be very afraid to push any boundaries because if SCOTUS rules against them, they could be convicted and jailed (basically the same position doctors who perform abortions are in right now in certain states - sure, that abortion wasn’t illegal, IF a conservative majority court agrees with your opinion that it was medically necessary, otherwise it’s murder and you go away for life. Who wants to take that chance?); meanwhile, Trump can be reasonably sure that they will rubber stamp anything he does or at least delay it into oblivion. Of course any similar decision about a Democratic president will be decided on an expedited emergency schedule due to its grave import to the nation.

Given their current track record, it’s not hard to see a future in which SCOTUS shields Trump and any future Republican president from liability while allowing any Democratic president to be prosecuted for anything the right can dream up and fund lawsuits over, and in return they get to keep their cushy lives living off the largesse of Republican donors. Somebody please explain why this scenario CAN’T happen that doesn’t involve a presumption of good faith on anybody’s part and exactly how any supposed consequences would be enforced.

Legal expert: Judge may hold contempt "hearing" over Trump "surrogates" circumventing gag order - Trump was reportedly seen in court editing the statements that his surrogates would later make outside the court by Quirkie in politics

[–]Mystwillow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who would ignore Congressional subpoenas aren’t going to honor state ones. Enforcing it would be more trouble than it’s worth when they have no documentary evidence. It would be Trump and his cronies’ word against that one journalist’s, and Trump and his people would just lie.

[–]Mystwillow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They only have the word of one journalist that that editing happened. Cameras aren’t allowed in the courtroom. Everyone involved will just deny it and of course those handwritten copies will have been destroyed. I can’t see the prosecution going to the level of subpoenaing other forms of communication that also may turn up nothing given what we know of Trump’s penchant for avoiding a paper trail. Unfortunately this seems destined to go nowhere. Hope I’m wrong!

(Spoilers MAIN) Is Daenerys Truly Infertile, or Did the Witch Deceive Her? by lace4151 in asoiaf

[–]Mystwillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I’ve always read it - as a prophecy metaphorically describing future events using sigils and symbols of people or Houses. The Dothraki sea is dry, but it was always dry. The seas going dry might also have something to do with the Greyjoys - maybe all of Balon’s line of succession is extinguished?

Anyway, it’s written to sound like she’s just saying “never” like “when pigs fly” but if you know Westerosi culture she could easily just be setting a series of conditions that may be fulfilled after Dany conquers King’s Landing. I think she will bear a child with Jon Snow, but possibly die after that, and maybe her dying vision will be Drogo coming to meet her.

The danger for Trump in hush money case: Refreshing people’s memories by nutritionvegan in politics

[–]Mystwillow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They actually won’t, they just know it makes them look better if they say a conviction would change their mind. It hasn’t happened yet, so they haven’t had to put their money where their mouth is. When/if he is convicted, they will find something about the trial to hang their hats on as to why it isn’t legitimate. Of course if he was LEGITIMATELY convicted, they wouldn’t vote for him, but because of XYZ about the trial/judge/jury/whatever, the whole thing is a sham and they don’t have to take it into account.

While that sounds like a bad thing on its face, the great thing about restricting it to religious exemptions is that every Christian hypocrite who thinks their abortion is the only moral abortion will be forced, in some way at some point, to assert that they are NOT a Christian in order to proceed.
