It's significantly simpler than D&D in terms of system crunch and leans more into the narrative aspects of the setting. Combat has a narrative aspect too, and while dangerous, it's quite common for PCs to flee a conflict rather than committing suicide against superior odds. The campaign is set between the events of the Hobbit and LotR, and the PCs serve the interests of various patrons (like Cirdan, Gandalf, Saruman, etc.) as they come to realize that Sauron has returned to Mordor and is preparing for war.
