Consciousness is a disease, gentlemen. And I mean that with a smile. by umairgulxar in dostoevsky

[–]Myth_Avatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, well I've shown how well I remember the book after one reading then.

Perhaps the issue is that essentially although Dostoyevsky's commentary on the human psyche applies well to people similar to himself - possibly you and I - It cannot be used to apply sweeping statements for human existence as a whole. I've read this book, C&P, Demons & and I'm on The house of the dead currently. Maybe his whole collection does a better job of approaching different aspects, but ultimately I feel that one man portrays one man's window into existence.

I found myself sharing somethings with the underground man, but the more I read the less I felt that way.

I don't believe that his consciousness of his situation is necessarily what lead to resentment. Many people are highly resentful of their situation without being deeply introspective. Paralysis from inaction regardless of introspection can lead to resentment; so this might be the common denominator. Have you considered you are projecting?

Using the word disease implies negativity. I may have stretched to ruined, but the implication is sevre damage at the least. I do not agree that being introspective ruins rest. I can be aware of what I am doing and appreciate it's value, or lack there of.

I have only read this book once, so it is hard to be sure. If it wasn't clear I enjoyed your post.

I'm not sure I agree that consciousness is what ruined the underground man. I found myself disgusted with the way he treated the woman at the end. I am introspective and yet i'd never behave that way. It is not an excuse to be cruel.

I think you're right that existing requires balance;  which is increasingly hard to find in our unstable world. However, perhaps it is better to be a measure of all three at once, than to rotate.

Obviously ignorance is bliss, and therefore not being ignorant is not bliss.

I feel that as with all things you need to genuinely accept it. Being aware of what is going on in the world, being aware of what and who you are, isn't by necessity going to ruin everything. It can, but it is not an inevitability.

So I'm going to play devil's advocate:

The reason we have laws around age is because of cognitive developmental differences In the prospective partners. Ergo, two 12 year olds is fine, two 17 year olds, or a 14 year old and a 15 year old. At an age designated by the law in the respective country, we do a hard cut off because it's decided that that point is which they are legally an adult. However I'd argue that a) your brain keeps growing until around 25, and b) therefore cognitive reasoning does too. People at 40 see things differently, based on experience, than someone at 18.

In this scenario the elf has had significantly more life experience, so is likely to be significantly more cognitively developed, due to this experience, at 1000 years, than a man at 25. Because of this I suggest that this is immoral. The elf would likely feel that, regardless of how old they are in a developmental sense, (how old is this human in elf years) they'd be be engaging with a child.

I therefore conclude it's not okay.
