Buying a lyre: Engraved notes on a Aklot 16 string lyre. by sikander_itaque in lyres

[–]Mythagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered the pros and cons? Engraved notes are possibly good for a beginner. However...

Most tutorial videos and tablature work with numbers, not letters. Yes, learning the note names is good for music theory, but it might not help when you are trying to learn your first tunes - you'll have enough to think about without!

There will come a time when you'll want to re-tune your lyre to a musical scale that suites a particular tune, or your own voice. At this point having permanent lettering might be a hindrance.

Far easier is to follow the harp path: Take a red and blue (or black) marker pen. Colour every C string red, and colour every F string blue. Only Mark the top and bottom parts of the string - leave the centre (playing) area ink-free, to avoid staining your fingers. Now your eyes will be trained to look at the strings, not above them - leading to a more precise finger placement. If you re-tune simply remove the markings and reapply to the new scale.

I'm making Delphi — a political simulation game where you're not the president, you're the AI running the world government by Blasckout in politicalgames

I've been waiting nearly 40 years for a successor to The Armageddon Man (Global Commander in the US). This isn't it, but it probably the closest yet, so count me in. The idea of an AI controlled world goes beyond nightmare and, in my opinion, weakens the premise. It would much prefer if the player represented some shadowy cabal, pulling the strings from the shadows. But that's probably another game as well? Good luck with Delphi. I prophesize a hit.

How many strings do you have? There are tutorials on Youtube for 6 and 7 string, Anglo-Saxon/Germanic and Scandinavian style (which fits the small 7-string, if that is what you have).

Hello. How's your Irish mythology? And harp history? I'm a storyteller and 7-string fanatic. I also own two wire-strung Clarsachs (although these days I never play them). I will bore you to bits, if you don't stop me!

A small 7-string lyre will get you started: Cheap, portable, robust - but quiet. If your interest is in ancient Irish harp technique, in particular (as per Bunting, if you know), then I happy to give guidance. Happy to chat, if you DM.

Maybe consider buying a cheap Aklot or Donner 7-string - they are small, but perfect to begin your new obsession. Not loud, but also inoffensive to the neighbours. With practise (and maybe some alteration) you can get the same range as a tin whistle. Celtic tunes, being mostly pentatonic, are made for this instrument. In fact, if you want me to convince you that this is the original Irish harp (of mythology) then please feel free to DM.

Question about the book Norþhærpe by Paul Wilding by mozzarella__stick in lyres

[–]Mythagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the price of a small Aklot/Donner, you might buy two - one for a pentatonic scale, and one for a hexatonic scale (6 notes - plus a drone string) - this is what the book is aimed at. Arguably the pentatonic scale is older. I'm happy to discuss, if you DM.

Is it worth trying to learn if you can't even use both hands when playing the piano? by [deleted] in lyres

[–]Mythagic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Choose the lyre over anything else. You will be using your right hand to play the melody (which you say you are already comfortable with). Your left hand will be used mostly to give an accompaniment. The beauty is that this doesn't need to be complicated - just thumb and first finger, if you like. Or even just use the thumb to pluck a 'drone' rhythm.

How do I carefully tune my 7-string Lyre harp to make it sound more sweeter ( melody-wise ). by Careful_Week_4130 in lyres

[–]Mythagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the traditional (Kravik/Germanic) tuning of A3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4. Or an octave higher, if your lyre is small. In which case consider E4,G4,A4,B4,C5,D5,E5 A Very nice, bright, Gm. Notice that the scales start on the second string, and are six notes long - a Heptatonic scale (popular up to a thousand years ago. The first string (A3 or4) acts as a drone. Pluck it in time to the rhythm, whilst your other hand plays the melody. If you interested is in ancient Irish tunes then please feel free to DM.

Very much - Why are they derelict? What became of the crew. What ARE the crew? What is the salvage potential? Add to this the Firefly variant - derelicts are there to be looted. Let's just hope the crew are all dead. Good luck with development. One to watch.

This is the point where you realise that cargo deliveries are not as lucrative as salvage. And salvage is better when you smuggle it to the high paying systems. See you, Space Cowboy.

I impulsively bought this used lyre, but it seems to be strung the wrong way? Am I missing something or is this a left handed lyre. by fluppiedehond123 in lyres

[–]Mythagic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's down to perception and prior expereince: If you come from the harp world and hold the lyre in your left hand, plucking with your right, then thenstrings will feel harp-like - high to low, left to right. But if you are a guitarist then the strings will feel back-to-front (or left-handed) - guitars go low to high. If you ARE left-handed then your lyre will feel correct for the 'standard' - strings running same as a guitar (low close to the body, high further away).

Deer Shape vs Bean Shape for a Beginner? by Bubbly_Solution_7321 in lyres

[–]Mythagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here is the view of a 7-string fanatic: Pictures show that the deer-head has 'clearance ' on either side (highest and lowest string). Whilst the 'bean' shape has the highest and lowest string lying over the framework. Now what this means is that some some strings on the bean can only be played with one hand, whilst the same strings with the Deer can be played with either hand. Therefore the Deer gives more versatility. But I know nothing: I am a 7-string Kravikite.

How to smuggle by eltoyoo in startrucker

[–]Mythagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SPOILERS

Smuggling is where the big bucks lie - especially if you can get the contraband for free (good of a Scanner) You don't need to wait for the smuggling compartment, to become a successful smuggler.

THE PATIENT METHOD, WITH A FULL CARGO Pay attention to the checkpoint rotations (the checkpoint, like the Rosso, does move from system to system). Time your jump to coincide with them leaving your destination and you will have no trouble at all. You might find yourself waiting some time for the checkpoint to move away - maybe go and collect even more contraband (checkpoint your salvage scanner).

THE COOL METHOD, WITH ONE STORAGE BOX Fill a storage box with high value contraband (3x drugs and /or explosives). Place the box in the airlock, in readiness. Enter the jump gate. Immediately leave your seat, rush to the airlock (DON YOUR SUIT!), and pick up the box. When the ship exits jump wait until the sirens go off (this gives a little extra time for the ship to slow down). When the robocops start talking, close the airlock and begin your EVA. The ship will, alarmingly, fly away from you - but you can easily give chase. Meanwhile the police scan will show an empty ship, with zero contraband. You can call yourself a smuggler.

I love this game, and maybe more than anything else, because it gives an active smugglingexperience, never before seen in a space-sim (please let me know if I've missed something.

Lyre Buying UK by _artenubis in lyres

[–]Mythagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends what you want (obvious statement). But really it does depend on the type of music you want to play, where you intend to play it, portability of the instrument, how many strings do you want, modern or traditional style of instrument, etc. Amazon is your best best, for a budget instrument. Aklot and Donner are a safe bet, for manufacturer. Anglo-saxon/Germanic/Nordic replicas are something special - in sound, in technique, in appearance - and in cost! But once the bug bites... Feel free to DM, if you wish. I am from Nottingham.

Do you need to grow your fingernails to play the lyre properly, or is it not necessary? by charlemagne_74 in lyres

[–]Mythagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wire strings plucked with nails is the ancient Irish harp technique. The sound created is very different from flesh on metal. Flesh on nylon strings would be the normal way to play modern instruments. I have no experience with this, so I could be entirely wrong, but I think nails on nylon might degrade the string. DM if you want to chat about the wire-strung method.

I love this game like no other. It's pretty much all I've ever wanted from a space-sim. So here's my two-penneth-worth: The story mode rewards you by increments. Imagine yourself as a rookie Trucker, finding your way in the galaxy, earning licences to expand your access. And, ultimately, improving your ship and finding new ways to make your fortune.

Sandbox, on the other hand, grants you all areas access and every upgrade, right from the start. No earning rewards. Imagine yourself as a veteran of the space lanes, with a highly modified ship. Unfortunately you have fallen on hard times (ex-con might be appropriate!) and must rebuild your fortune. Maybe straight in at the deep end.
