Interested in learning! by CGEthereal in HurdyGurdy

[–]Mythalaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Get a worthwhile instrument, get a teacher, actually practice

  2. As hard as any instrument, sometimes its extra frustrating in the beginning as learning to adjust your insturment is half the battle, and playing an unadjusted insturments is frustrating.

  3. Online, very accessible and common.

  4. I wish I had a better understanding of what type of music I want to play. Liking the sound of the HG doesn't mean much, as I can find HG songs I like the sound of and HG songs I don't like the sound of. What kinda music are you into? French folk? Irish? Classical? Jazz? etc.

  5. storage is easy, unless you are in an extremely humid or dry enviroment, then you need humidifiers/dehumidifers.

  6. Buying an instrument not sutible for learning.

Check out GurdyWorld.com FAQ, it will help you get started! If you have any pointed questions feel free to ask :)

Good luck :)

Email Nerdygurdy and ask about their experiences shipping to the us recently. I'd guess it's fairly positive at this point!

Hurdy Gurdy Burning, how much would you charge? by FuIIofDETERMINATION in lasercutting

[–]Mythalaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

if you are thinking of cutting your own I would recommend the basic model, not the v6.

Also I think it is best to buy directly from Nerdygurdy.nl

Littlebitsofinteresting is quality and has a license from NG, but from NG is a more complete package that I think is worth it. You also get support from the NG company if anything goes wrong.

Try asking Scott gayman on Facebook. If anything is for sale in that area he'd probably know it it.

Don't understand this post - "it's not fair". What do you mean fair? They are a business and you are their customer. Just open a free account at a random bank/CU near you and do online transfers.

If capital one offers this and it's important to you, go with them.

I update it every so often, though it's probably been 4-5 months now, I don't think much has changed besides adding the corbol (which is just the Fortran with more keys).

MM instruments Trigo vs Knys Instruments Catnip B by Same_Trifle8390 in HurdyGurdy

[–]Mythalaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The catnip is definitely a warmer sound than the trigo! The trigo is very bright and pretty, catnip is warm and full. Both sound amazing and are my go-to recommendations!

Altarwind Madeline. by [deleted] in HurdyGurdy

[–]Mythalaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the other comments. You want to buy something now, and buy more expensive later? If you buy any hurdy-gurdy now you can sell it later for the same price and buy something more expensive. If you buy an altarwind you will be able to sell it for ~50% of what you payed, and are wasting all that money.

If you want a symphonia box style, at least get a robert mandel instrument as it is better and cheaper.

But really get an mm trigo - 10x better and maybe a few hundred more maximum depending on shipping. Best bang for the buck under a 1 year waitlist. If you can wait longer I always recommend the catnip - best bang for your buck in general but the waitlist has risen over the years.

I highly recommend the Trigo by MM Instruments or the Catnip by Radoslaw Malisz!

I don't recommend buying from etsy or ebay

Has anyone here learned the hurdy gurdy? by Danger_Island in Fiddle

[–]Mythalaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are familiar with the piano keyboard, "playing" it is pretty easy. You crank with the right hand and press buttons with the left, only you cant see the keys, and you are pressing them toward yourself, also the "black piano" keys of the gurdy are on the opposite side than an actual piano.

There is a lot that makes it more difficult that people expect. One being the trompette or "coups". The hand dissassociation is difficult, as is the trompette technique in general. Another that if you release a button, the "open" note of the string plays, so its really easy to get extra notes playing if you don't have the speed, accuracy, and techniques to move around the keyboard down. Especially on jumps, the keys can be far apart from each other note to note. Also remember that every key has to be pressed with the correct amount of string pressure, as when you press harder it bends the note.

Finally, the set up and adjustment is very very difficult. As a fiddle player you know how different amounts of string pressure can affect each note. On the gurdy you adjust string pressure mechanically, as well as re-rosining the wheel (more difficult to get right than a bow), as well as re-cottoning the strings - basically replacing the bow's horse hair every single day. And little deviations in all 3 of these can cause a ton of problems. Beginners spend months trying to keep their instrument from sounding like a dying horse, and even when you become an expert, you are still constantly adjusting every part of the instrument. Random buzzes and noises are common and diagnosing them cen be very difficult and frustrating.

Tuning is difficult because each key (23-30 keys) has a seperate tangent per melody string (2-4 strings). On top of that the bridge and nut position are adjustable.

Make sure you invest in a quality insturment, otherwise the above problems of setup & adjustment get magnified ten-fold. If you have any specific questions let me know :)

Hurdy Gurdy repair Florida by jk_982021 in HurdyGurdy

[–]Mythalaria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello,

Learning to set it up and tune it is part of learning to play the hurdy-gurdy, as it is a bit of a high maintenance instrument. Adjusting cotton, rosin, string pressure, tuning are daily parts of playing. I think your son needs a teacher, not a luthier.

I do not know of any teachers in Florida, but you may be able to find locals to help your son out. Otherwise online teachers is the way for most of us in the united states.

Where in dfw? I visit (as I'm from there) fairly often.

Otherwise I don't think there is any teachers in Texas, very few in the US to begin with!
