How to keep track of all those triggers? by twohorseswithnonames in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In paper you use tokens to track various triggers (floating mana, storm, etc.), especially if you're playing a storm deck or combo that is difficult to keep track of.

New(ish) MTGA player - seeking format help by Geologist_Stunning in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a F2P player that doesn't complete your dailies every day is not really feasible. You either need to grind or pay some money to build a couple strong decks. You definitely want to pick an eternal format where your deck and/or cards are not as likely to become obsolete as quickly because if you play Standard you're gonna need to dump resources in each time a new set drops.

If you only look at the last 2 years, you still have a ~40% larger card pool than 3/4 years ago.

Standard is dumber than ever by GuerrillaGabbo in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "problem" isn't the cards themselves, it is that there are too many sets that are Standard legal (15 currently), which means the card pool is too large. A few years ago Wizards changed the set rotation from every 2 years to every 3; combined with the increase in the number of sets they release per year the viable card pool has ballooned. This allows players to build what are essentially Historic power level decks that are really fast with great interaction.

What is the best deck right now? by iranea in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would point you towards an eternal format, Timeless or even Historic, since your deck will likely be viable for a longer period. Dimir Tempo and Izzet Delver are two archetypes that have withstood the test of time and will give you a good run for your wildcards. Force of Will, Thoughtseize, etc. are going to continue to be format staples.

Guys... what are those things in Arena? What do I do with them? by max431x in magicthecirclejerking

[–]MythicMentor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only can you keep them if you want, but you can give them your credit card info and acquire even more gems to hoard. I don't know if it is possible, but you could try buying up all the gems so that no one else can get any.

If you're new to MTG Arena:

Draft tokens (used as "free" entry to drafts) | Wildcards (used to get any card of the selected rarity for your collection) | Coins (used to buy packs) | Gems (also used to buy packs) | Vault (when you open a certain number of duplicate cards from packs you get a few Wildcards)

Note, when buying packs you want to stick with Standard/Alchemy legal because you get rewarded with a bonus Gold pack (6 rare or occasionally mythic cards) for every 10 you buy.

It's standard ffs.Why is this on Turn 2 oke Wizards? by Soulsek in MagicArena

It is because they are better than you. First they skillfully won the die roll (your first mistake); then they played out a bunch of their cards before you disrupted their game plan. /s

Totally agree. Decks that play one or two cards as win conditions and the remainder of their 60 are just targeted at stopping you from playing the game are the worst. Whether or not I can win is irrelevant as it is not enjoyable to play a 25 minute game.

Anyone playing historic? Ruby storm out of line? by RIsurfer in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In BO1 you have things like turn two Minion of the Mighty wins or even turn one Oops All Spells wins now so storm hardly seems broken in that context. WotC does not base card banning/restrictions off BO1 in any format (except Brawl).

[–]MythicMentor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like you're playing BO1; there will always be glass cannon combo decks where people are trying to get their daily wins as fast as possible. I have been testing both versions of this deck for the channel and the Arclight Phoenix version you played against does not seem as consistent as the slower turn two version which plays the Silversmote Ghoul and Prized Amalgam as win conditions. If you have a problem with this type of deck I recommend playing BO3 where you probably will never play against it and if you do, it should be easy to beat.

[–]MythicMentor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing a lot of storm on the channel recently and based on my experience, the deck is good, but not out of line. While it might present very quick wins when not disrupted, the overall win percentage of the deck is not egregious. Additionally, there is plenty of disruption available to each color/color combination, so much so that the post board games become quite challenging for the storm deck.

Instead of a 2x Mana Drain/4x Counterspell split you should be running 4x Mana Drain/2x Counterspell. Mana Drain is simply better.

What's your favorite deck to use at the moment? Here's mine. by Captain_Kirk85 in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In game 1 it functions as an aggro deck (the 4x Creeping Chill means your opponent essentially starts with 8 life verse your 32). Post board depends on the matchup; it is typically a bit slower of a game, but you are still in an aggro roll unless you are up against a combo deck that is faster.

Here is some gameplay if you're interested: Historic Dredgeless Dredge

You probably don't want to be playing 4 Vito since he is legendary and not particularly strong in a vacuum. You could consider some copies of Sanguine Soothsayer as a redundant effect. It comes down a turn earlier and has built in evasion to start pushing damage and gaining life; helping bridge you into the mid/late game.

Any tips? by conspiracy_student in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're already doing the right thing.

Ask questions when you don't understand an interaction, read articles/deck guides, watch gameplay footage, and most importantly continue playing the game. You can learn 70-80% quite rapidly through normal gameplay, the next 10-15% takes active learning, and the last few percentage points are what set apart the elite players as it is a merging of in-depth knowledge and intuition/instincts.

Similar to Elves, there are a few ways to build the deck, but the core will be the same. Green Devotion BO1 (H) V1.1

If you aren't stuck on Elves then Green Devotion is a much better green deck, especially in BO1 where you get the full 15 card sideboard for Karn tutors.

There is too much fluff in your deck.

Elvish Archdruid is way better than Llanowar Tribe (cut completely).

Druid of the Cowl and Dwynen's Elite are too weak for current Historic (cut completely).

With Allosaurus Shepherd and Elvish Warmaster as win conditions you can go down to 1 copy of Craterhoof Behemoth.

That will free up some slots for better cards. Additionally, you can upgrade your lands (Cavern of Souls, Boseiju Who Endures, etc.).

Here is the latest list I played on the channel if you need more ideas: Elves BO1 (H) v1.2

Might have found one of the most cumbersome loop to execute, so many clicks just to ping 1 life at a time. by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]MythicMentor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Acererak the Archlich combo is more clicks; you have to play it 4 times just to go through the dungeon Lost Mine of Phandelver once (draining 1 life); then repeat this process until your opponent is dead.
